Chapter 186: Medical Examination
Amelia woke up to the strong smell of hospital disinfectant and different blends of perfume, invading her nostrils. She tried to swallow her saliva, but it felt like a sharp needle piercing the walls of her throat.
The room felt silent apart from her heavy breathing and the beeping sound of different medical devices taped to her body. It was an indication that she was in the hospital and she was still alive.
“But what happened? How and when did I get to the hospital? Did I pass out?” Amelia ransacked her memory as she tried to slowly open her eyes. The bright overhead lights assaulted her eyes, making her squint.
Then she had shuffling of feet and whispering voices before someone said out loud.
“Hey! She’s waking up.”
Amelia felt a warm touch on her arm.
“Yes, I can see it too. She is trying to open her eyes.”
“Not so loud.”
“Sorry”
“Thank goodness.”
“Quickly, go and get the doctor.”
Amelia heard several familiar excited voices all speaking at the same time.
‘Wait a second, were they here the whole time?’ Amelia pondered as she tried to make out the faces of the blurry images all around her. She squinted in an attempt to sharpen the blurred images before me.
“Princess.”
Amelia heard a deep, soft and affectionate masculine voice rap in her ear. She felt his warm hands softly stroke her forehead. She felt his warm kiss on her cheek, evoking a serene smile on her face.
“Dad!” Amelia’s voice came out a bit raspy and weak. It was barely audible but her father, who was peering down her face heard her loud and clear.
“Yes… it’s me, my baby.” Senator Gregory could barely contain his joy as he showered Amelia’s forehead with lots of kisses.
“You got all of us really scared.” Aunt Judith’s maternal voice came next, forcing Amelia’s head to turn the other way.
Amelia closed her eyes and opened it again. This time, she could clearly make out her aunt’s loving face and her father’s tired-looking face. Her eyes flickered about a little as if she was looking for someone else.
“Your husband is on the way. When I last spoke to him, he had already boarded a flight. He will be here before dawn.” Aunt Judith explained, a knowing smile glistening in her eyes.
Amelia nodded, a faint smile of appreciation framing her dry lips.
“How do you feel, my child?” The senator asked stroking her hair. “You gave us quite a scare last night.”
Amelia opened her mouth to speak but the only inaudible word that came out was, “water.”
“What did you say.” The senator lowered his ear to her lips.
“Water,” Amelia said, moistening her dry lips.
“She wants water.” Senator Greg said sitting up and pivoting his head to the back.
“Get her water quickly.” Aunt Judith reaffirmed.
“On it,” came Stacy’s thrilled voice.
“Shouldn’t we wait for the doctor to arrive first?” Kayla’s worried voice echoed next.
“Speak of the devil.”

A mature-looking female doctor, with greyish black short hair and a warm smile framing her face, strolled through the opened door. She was draped in an immaculate white coat, with a stethoscope hanging down her neck. She was closely accompanied by two female nurses.
One of the nurses was holding a tray containing different intravenous medications, syringes of different sizes and some gloves. The second nurse was holding a folder containing different test results from the lab.
“Doctor, she’s asking for water. Can we give her a little?”
“Certainly. But let the nurse take care of that.” The doctor replied with a polite smile.
“Thank you.” The Senator watched as one of the nurses gradually raised the head of the bed using the bed controls while ensuring that Amelia’s head was properly positioned with pillows.
Amelia was given water through a straw. As she slowly sipped the water from the glass, her eyes moved around the room taking in the faces of all who were present and beaming affectionately at her.
Aside from her girl squads, her father, her aunt, and Pascal, Amelia was stunned to see Tina seated alone on one of the double couches in the room, smiling at her.
“What the hell! What is she doing here and why did the girls let her hang around?” Amelia queried her troubled thoughts.
“Please I would like everyone to wait outside. I need some time alone with the patient.” The doctor pleaded.
“Can’t my father and aunt stay?” Amelia pleaded, her gaze shifting to the friendly doctor.
“I’m afraid not, my dear. I need to examine you.”
“Don’t worry sweetheart, we will all be outside waiting for you.” Aunt Judith said, standing up.
“Be strong, my princess.” Senator Gregory kissed her on the forehead before leaving her beside.
The doctor waited for the last person to exit the room and shut the door before focusing her attention on Amelia.
“Hello Mrs Anderson, I’m Doctor Ashley Walker, the resident female gynaecologist, and consultant in this hospital. I’m going to be examining you and asking you a few questions. I would appreciate it if you are completely open with me and be rest assured that whatever we discuss here is confidential.” The doctor said reassuringly, her honey-brown eyes brimming with motherly care.
“Okay. Thank you, Dr Ashley.” Amelia returned the gesture. “But please, may I ask how long I’ve been unconscious?”
The doctor checked her black leather wristwatch and replied.
“Judging from the time you were brought in at the emergency unit, I’ll say approximately seven hours.”
“Seven hours?” Amelia’s eyes widened.
“Yes, my, dear. You were in a lot of pain and your temperature was relatively high when my team of doctors arrived at your location. They had to sedate you and arrest your temperature before bringing you down here.”
“Really!”
“Yes. It was pretty serious. But I’m glad you are awake. So how do you feel?” The doctor asked examining her eyes.
“Tired, and a bit drowsy,” Amelia replied.
“Okay, the drowsiness is a result of the drugs we gave you earlier. But the fatigue has been traced to something else which I’ll be explaining in a few moments.”
The doctor signaled the nurses to make Amelia lie down flat on her back. She removed her stethoscope around her neck and attached the earpiece to her ears. Using the chest pieces, she listened to Amelia’s heart rhythm and took notes.
“Do you remember what happened the last time you were conscious?”The doctor asked taking her vitals.
Amelia looked up briefly and said. “My stomach was hurting really bad.”
“Okay. Did you experience any other strange symptoms?”
“Yes. I have been experiencing occasional migraine of late. Sometimes I feel a little bit dizzy especially when I’m stressed from work. I had diarrhea some days ago but I took something to take care of it. I also feel a bit nauseous sometimes and then I vomited while I was at the at the bar convenience.”
“When last did you experience your monthly flow?” Doctor Ashley asked casually.
