Chapter 29: Let’s Stay Married
“I want a divorce from this sham marriage that never happened between us,” Amelia said dryly, her words dripping with venom.
“A divorce!” Jerry replied half shocked, his eyes widened like a saucer.
“You heard me right, Jerry.” Amelia spat out.
“You can’t be serious Amelia,” Jerry said, glaring at her.
“Why? Aren’t you happy that I’m finally setting you free to go be with your little whore of a mistress?” Amelia asked mockingly, her steely gaze laced with unfathomable fury. “You should be telling me thank you. At least now you won’t have to hide while f**king her.”
Jerry’s face contoured like a rumpled paper, his narrowed eyes darkened and his fist clenched at Amelia’s words.
“You better watch your tongue, Amelia.” He warned taking one step closer toward her. “You may be the daughter of a senator but you are still my wife. I won’t have you insult me or your sister who has sacrificed so much for you.”
“Sacrificed!” Amelia scoffed. “Please, don’t make me puke. Neither you nor Gwen would ever understand the word sacrifice, even if it hits you both on your forehead.”
Jerry seethed like a kettle on the boil. “I’ve always thought Nana was wrong calling you a spoiled brat. But now I understand why. You are not just a spoiled rotten brat but an ungrateful lady.”
The conference room suddenly felt small as Amelia stood up, her fist clenched and her narrowed eyes shooting flares.
“What? Does the truth hurt? Are you going to slap me?” Jerry taunted pushing Amelia beyond her limits.”
Amelia clenched and unclenched her fist, her blazing eyes boring a hole through Jerry’s forehead.
“Go ahead, hit me if that will make you feel better.”
Jerry turned his face to the side, daring her to slap him. But Amelia remained unfazed, holding back her emotions. She stared deeply into Jerry’s taunting eyes and said in a low but painful tone.
“I regret all the years I spent loving a selfish and heartless coward like you. You made a mistake coming into my life thinking you could steal from me. But I promise you, by the time I am done dealing with you, even a beggar wouldn’t look twice before spitting in your face.”
“Keep dreaming Amelia.” Jerry took two steps backwards as he sized her up from head to toe, taking into account her captivating look. “I am not the one at fault here. You are the one who left me on the eve before our marriage. You are the one who made me compromise my standards by accepting Gwen as my wife in your place. You are the reason why the whole country is making jest of me, calling me all sorts of ridiculing names. If you think for a second, that I will let you drag my family’s name down the mud in a divorce, then you are in for a shocker. We will stay married unless you are ready to lose everything you owe to me. Think about it.”
“Hahaha…” Amelia laughed out loud as she sat down, closing the application she was working on and shutting down her system.
Picking up the intercom before her, she dialled the reception desk and raised the phone to her ear while smiling to herself.
“Good morning. LiLa Savvy Jane on the line, how may I be of service to you, please?” A sweet female voice rapped in Amelia’s ear.
“Is Mr Barry Herman in the building?” Amelia asked, ignoring Jerry’s curious and slightly troubled gaze.
There was a slight pause before the receptionist replied. “Yes ma’am, he’s seated at the reception waiting room.”
“Kindly send him to the conference room on the third floor,” Amelia said and hung up.
“Who is Mr Barry Herman?” Jerry asked, a hint of jealousy lacing his stone. “Is he the one you are secretly dating while pretending to be righteous?”
“You’ll see.” Amelia cleared the things on her table, leaving behind a yellow folder and a brown envelope.
Jerry eyed the folder and brown envelope beside Amelia’s laptop suspiciously as he took the same seat Gwen sat on earlier. He could guess that whatever was in there was meant for him.
Changing his tactics, he spoke more calmly.
“Look here Amelia, let’s not fight. We are both adults and we are both in the wrong.”
The initial coldness and harshness of his voice were replaced with something more subtler.
“I’m sorry for raising my voice at you and for the way, I acted towards you the previous day. I had no right to judge you without first listening to you. Can we put all of this behind us and move ahead?”

“…”
Jerry released a sigh of frustration at Amelia’s silent treatment.
“Honestly, I’ve been so mad at myself and you ever since the day of our wedding. I allowed my emotions to get in the way and I said things I didn’t mean to say. I’m not perfect and I can change my ways if you give me another chance to prove my love to you. Please, let’s go back to the way things were before the wedding.”
Jerry paused hoping that Amelia would say something. But when she didn’t he continued.
“Amy, I made a mistake by getting involved with Gwen. To be sincere, I do not love her. I was driven by loneliness, heartache and lust. But I know that is not an excuse to cheat on you. Please, my love, forgive me. I do not want to get divorced. Think of the damage it will do to both our families. Please, baby, let’s stay married. Let’s give ourselves a second chance.”
“…”
“Amy… say something.”
Completely ignoring Jerry like he wasn’t there, Amelia slowly picked up her laptop bag and stood up.
“Amelia, I’m talking to you.” Jerry also stood up, blocking her path. “Say something. Anything.”
“Get out of my way.” Amelia spat out.
“No… I cannot do that. Not until you tell me you have forgiven me. Please, honeybun. I love you.”
Jerry said softly, placing both his hands on Amelia’s shoulder to hug her.
But in the next few seconds, Amelia transformed into a wild cat. She slowly dropped her bag on the table, acting as though she was about to reciprocate Jerry’s gesture.
“That’s my b…”
Before Jerry could calculate Amelia’s next move, her clenched fist came hard on his face, knocking out the remaining words from his mouth.
