Chapter 292: Unrepentant Granddaughter
“Pivotal Changes” The senator echoed back Sam’s words, his voice laced with irritation and disbelief as he stared at his daughter. “What is he talking about Gwen? Did you make any changes in my absence?”

The initial fear etched across Gwen’s forehead dissipated. She clenched her fist under the table trying to keep her temper in check as she replied.

“Yes, Dad. That is what I’ve been trying to explain to you. But you kept shunning me like a nobody.”

The senator opened his mouth to reprimand her openly before the maids but one look at his mother restrained him. He let out a frustrated sigh, massaging his forehead as he shifted his attention to the security guards.

“Return to your duty post.”

He calmly dismissed them including the maids in the dining room, leaving only Sam behind.

“Gwen, why did you do such a thing without consulting your father?” Nana Shawls demanded calmly. “How could you bring in a gardener who has no business inside the mansion to serve our meal? Does that sound like a wise choice to you?”

Gwen resisted the urge to scoff at the old hag, fury bubbling like molten lava in her veins. She pushed her chair backwards and stood up, her expression cold and her voice stiff.

“Forgive me Grandma, but I never thought I needed Dad’s approval to feel comfortable in this house. Also, I believe every domestic staff here are multitasking. It doesn’t take any formal education to serve a simple meal.”

Nana Shawl’s eyes narrowed with irritation as her granddaughter kept blabbing.

“I didn’t appreciate the disrespectful attitude of the kitchen staff towards me earlier today.” Gwen lied between her teeth. “So I made changes to the best of my knowledge. How is it my fault that these domestic staff are all incompetent? And why do I have to put up with this old pompous and arrogant butler who treats me like an outcast?”

“What!” Sam’s jaw dropped, his innocent gaze flickering to the Senator.

“That is enough, Gwen.” The senator bellowed, causing Gwen to flinch. I will not have you…”

“I’ve lost my appetite.” Gwen rudely cut her father off, not ready to listen to his lectures. “I’m going to bed. Goodnight.”

“Stop right there, Gwen.” Nana Shawls snapped angrily, her voice slightly raised.

Gwen halted, both her fist clenched and her back turned on her grandmother and father.

“Return to your seat at once and stop this foolishness.” Nana Shawls’ authoritative voice resounded in the room, her pulse racing.

Gwen was tempted to snub the old matriarch. However, she knew the consequences of doing so.

Moreover, with Amelia in the old hag’s good book, she couldn’t predict what the old woman would do next, especially with the way her father was now fuming like an unleashed hound.

“I’m sorry, Grandma.” Gwen slowly returned to her seat, while avoiding her father’s livid gaze. “I’m also sorry for my outburst, Dad. I didn’t mean to be rude. I lost my patience due to my hormonal imbalance.”

“Hormonal imbalance!” The senator’s eyes blazed with irritation as he glared at Gwen, seeing through her lies. He was trying not to judge her based on everything Amelia had told him. But she was beginning to prove him wrong within a space of three days.

“We will talk about this hormonal imbalance after dinner in my office.” The senator said steely, his tone void of any emotion as he sat down.

“Whatever!” Gwen mumbled under her breath lowering her gaze.

Shifting his attention to Sam, the senator instructed the latter calmly to serve his mother her food and to assemble all the house staff outside the mansion by the entrance for a brief address.

A smile curled up Sam’s lips as he replied. “Yes, sir.”

Gwen clenched her teeth, her narrowed gaze shooting laser as she met Sam’s ridiculing stares, while the latter served the old matriarch her meal.

After Sam exited the dining room leaving the family of three, dinner was eaten in silence.

Unlike the senator and his mother who still retained their appetite after the short drama, Gwen barely ate the tasty meal before her.

She was seething like a pressure cooker with steam coming out of both her ears.

Her first take-over mission had just flopped before her eyes all thanks to the legacy her repulsive stepsister left behind. What would become of her authority in the mansion now that her father wasn’t the gullible fool she once adored?

After dinner, senator Shawls excused himself from the dining room while Nana Shawls stayed back briefly to address her granddaughter.

“Gwen, I thought we had an agreement.” Nana Shawls said calmly, observing the way she was playing with her food without eating.

Gwen gritted her teeth, stabbing the sliced turkey on her plate, wishing she could shove the spicy meat down the old hag’s throat and silence her forever.

“I’m sorry, Grandma.”

“Saying sorry isn’t enough, Gwen. Let it reflect in your actions. You just returned from prison thanks to your wrong decision. Do you want to go down that same path again?”

Vengeful tears pulled at the corner of Gwen’s eyes but she didn’t reply to her grandmother.

“I don’t want to revisit the past and I understand you are still finding it difficult to adjust to a normal life. But you have to try. Don’t give your father and me any reason to think you haven’t changed your ways. We don’t want any more problems.”

Gwen’s grip around her fork tightened, her knuckle almost turning white, as she sniffed, wiping her nose roughly.

Nana Shawls ignored her streaming tears as she reiterated in a stern voice.

“I will not condone any form of disruptive attitude from you again. Your father and sister have both worked hard to keep the peace in this family for the past six months since your incarceration. I won’t have you or anyone causing trouble again. If you’re not satisfied with something, all you have to do is inform your father and let him take care of it. I wouldn’t want a repeat of this behaviour. Have I made myself clear?”

Gwen slowly lifted her gaze to meet the old matriarch’s, her expression void of empathy, remorse or love.

“Crystal, Grandma. May I be excused?”

“No, you may not.” Nana Shawls was disgusted by the unrepentant look on her granddaughter’s face. “Sit down here and wait for your father like he instructed you. I hope to see a change in you, by tomorrow morning. Goodnight.”

Nana Shawl pulled out in her wheelchair, unassisted and exited the room while Gwen’s murderous gaze followed her.

She had barely shut the door when the senator strolled in fuming after getting a detailed report of Gwen’s misbehavior in his absence.

“We need to talk, now.”
