Chapter 305: Bugged
Senator Gregory’s jaw dropped. It never occurred to him that his second daughter was this dumb.

He always thought she was as smart as Amelia in terms of business management. But from the looks of everything happening, it became clearer that she was an empty vessel hiding under the shadow of her sister’s intelligence.

Senator Gregory pinched his forehead while exhaling through his mouth to stifle his spiked nerves.

“Gwen, as a certified businesswoman, you ought to know that a business proposition is key in understanding the company’s offerings and value before exploring potential partnerships. You don’t just dump ten million dollars into any business just because it’s run by a family member. That is simply a recipe for disaster. Haven’t you learned anything from your sister in all your years of working with her?”

“That is it.” Gwen abruptly stood up. “If you are not going to give me the money then just spit it out instead of comparing me with Amelia. I’m out of here.” She screamed at her father and was about to leave when Nana’s sharp voice called her to order

“Sit down.”

“Grandma….”

“I said, sit down.” Nana Shawls cut her protest off.

Gwen grudgingly plopped into her seat, looking sideways, tears pulling at the corner of her eyes.

Nana Shawls reprimanded her son for comparing Gwen with Amelia, thereby fueling their sibling rivalry. She stressed that he needed to be more empathetic and less harsh towards her, seeing that she was still finding it difficult to adjust to life after prison.

Turning to Gwen, Nana Shawls said calmly. “I won’t have you disrespecting your father under this roof. You do not get what you want by throwing tantrums or whining. You get them through devotion, hard work and respect. Nevertheless, I will plead to your father on your behalf.”

Gwen turned her face to her grandmother, beaming triumphantly. However, the smile diminished as the old woman completed her statement.

“But, you won’t get the whole amount from him. He would only support you with five million dollars. You will have to work for the rest and prove to him through your success that your business is worth investing in. No one wants to see their hard-earned money flushed down the drain.”

Gwen scoffed under her breath, disgusted at her grandmother’s words.

‘What is five million dollars compared to the money she had in her possession before Amelia decided to show her ugly face?’

Senator Gregory continued to stare speechlessly at his daughter, seeing through the masked hatred in her eyes.

‘Did her six months behind bars or the loss of her unborn child turn her into this bitter and hateful woman? Or is there something else eating her up?’ He pondered, hungry for answers. ‘Maybe I should give in to her demands this once and see where that takes us. After all, money does bring out the worst in greedy people.’

“I’ll give her the whole money, Mom.” Senator Gregory said in a more calm and empathetic tone.

“What!” Both Gwen and her grandmother chorused.

“If ten million dollars would put a smile on my daughter’s face, then that is what I’ll do. I don’t want to fight anymore. I want peace.”

“Oh, thank you, Daddy.” Gwen jumped up from her seat and ran over to her father, embracing him tenderly and pecking him on the cheek. “You are the best and I love you so much.”

Nana Shawls chuckled and shook her head while smiling at her son in appreciation.

“Just make sure you spend the money wisely.”

“I will Dad.” Gwen picked up her phone and handbag from the table. “I’ll go see Aunt Harriet right now and tell her the good news.”

“Aren’t you going to finish your food, first?” The senator asked.

“I’m full. I have to go now, Dad. I’ll text my account details to you, later.” Gwen hurried out of the dining room, blowing kisses to her father.

“Such a silly little girl. I hope she doesn’t squander the entire money” Nana Shawls sighed.

“I hope so too.” Senator Gregory released a sigh of relief.

After breakfast, he called the attention of his head of security and his butler into his study.

“Have you done what I asked you to?” The senator demanded, staring impatiently at his head of security.

“Yes, senator.” The tall, slightly masculine young man, cladded in a black suit replied politely. “I have hired a private spy to monitor all her movement and report back to me. I also had her bugged. We will be able to track her at every point in time.”

“Good.”

“One more thing, senator. We observed some form of electronic interference on Miss Gwen when she arrived yesterday.”

“Electronic interference!” The senator arched his brow in surprise.

“Yes sir. Upon further investigation, after she stepped out last night to cool off, we discovered that her new cell phone, laptop, fancy notepad, earrings and hair clips were bugged with advanced micro-listening devices.

“What!” Senator Gregory stifled a growl, his muscles tensed.

“We think she is in cahoot with some unknown individuals, who are monitoring things happening in here. Since we don’t know who this people are, we haven’t tampered with any of these devices. So we will advise you to beware of what you discuss in her presence pending when we get the necessary intel to take action. Also, beware of giving her access to your bedroom, your car or even your offices.”

The senator nodded, his heart pounding. He shifted his gaze to the butler and asked.

“Sam, have you gotten what I asked for?”

“Yes, senator.” Sam handed the senator two small transparent sealed bags containing broken strands of blonde hair follicles. “These are the hair samples I collected from her hairbrush yesterday and this morning.”

“Good.” The senator collected the hair sample and gave it to his head of security, including a swab sample from his mouth. “I want a paternity test conducted on these samples. Make it as discrete as possible.”

“Yes, sir.” The head of security left to carry out the senator’s wish.

The senator further gave Sam new rules concerning Gwen and her activities within the mansion before dismissing him.
