Chapter 306: No Brainer
At a secret location within the suburb of the city, a rugged-looking man was busy tapping away furiously on his laptop keyboard while listening to a live transmission communication.
He had a conspicuous scar on the side of his bald head and a tattoo of Medusa on his left arm.
He seemed deeply engrossed in his job occasionally scrunching his face and flaring his nostrils in irritation.
Seated opposite this man was his pregnant partner Nora, dressed in a bump short paired with a stretchy spaghetti strap red top.
Her long legs were lazily crossed on the dining table, and she was smoking dry weed and puffing out a cloud of smoke through her mouth.
“You know you’re still pregnant right.” Nora’s partner, named Rust, gritted his teeth, the fumes of the weed, choking his lung. “That thing is not good for your child, and yet your crackhead doesn’t know when to call it quit.”
“Maybe my crackhead doesn’t give a f*ck.” Nora spat out, her eyes spiteful and cold. “If it were up to me, I’d use a dagger and carve out this little piece of shit ruining her sexy body.”
“What’s stopping you?” Rust picked up his dagger and slid it to her. “Be my guest. I’m sure it will be fun to watch.” He snickered wickedly.
“F*ck you, asshole.” Nora hissed like a snake.
“The feeling is mutual.” Rust returned his attention to his laptop, tapping away.
“You better get your lazy ass up from that seat and get to work. Your brainless friend failed to bug her father.”
Nora clenched her jaw, anger coursing through her veins like an angry viper. She took a long drag of her lit weed, soaking her lung and airway with the intoxicating smoke before retrohaling it.
“I can’t believe that fool forgot to gift her father the pen I gave her specifically for that purpose.” She put out the weed, hissing.
“What do you expect from that no-brainer like yourself.” Rust snarled. “You should be thankful that the boss still finds you useful.”
Nora was tempted to pick the dagger on the table and redesign this asshole’s ugly face. But she knew she didn’t stand a chance against this one hundred and twenty pounds lethal killing machine.
If he was able to take out a heavily pregnant innocent pregnant woman just to create a diversion for her to get close to their target, then snapping her neck wouldn’t mean anything to him.
Nora brought down her leg from the table and stood up, picking up her phone.
“Where is Gwen?”
“Currently at Lincoln Lounge in the mainland, having a swell time with her aunt and negotiating the terms of business,” Rust replied without looking away from his laptop.
“What about the money she is expecting? Has the ten million dollars been credited into her account?”
“No…wait a minute.” Rust listened while maximizing a hidden window showing a bank account statement. “The account just got credited.”
“Good! The senator is finally playing to our tune.” Nora grinned, rubbing her hands together.
“You can’t jump to conclusions yet. We need eyes and ears on him to monitor his activities. Get to work and see to it that the no-brainer does her job without breaking cover.”
“Sure” Nora left for the bathroom while dialling a number on her phone.
“Don’t forget your hospital appointment today. You have to be there by 1:00 PM before the target shows up.”
“Got it.” Nora disappeared into the bathroom, speaking to Gwen over the phone in her sweetest voice.

Gwen wasn’t aware of the people tracking her every movement as she left Lincoln Lounge for the suburbs of the city, driving one of her father’s exotic cars.
She pulled over at Nora’s apartment and stepped out of her car. She observed her surroundings briefly before disappearing into the building.

Twenty minutes later, Gwen stepped out of the building alone holding a black shopping bag. She got into her car and zoomed off in the direction of her father’s office.
When she arrived at the heavily guarded entrance to the state Capitol, she introduced herself as the daughter of the senator and was granted assess to the public gallery for further scrutiny.
“Good day, Miss Gwen.” A corporately dressed lady approached her inside the gallery reception room.
“Hello.” Gwen plastered a sweet smile on her chubby face.
“I’m told you wanted to see the senator.”
“Yes. He is my father.” Gwen gestured proudly as if been the daughter of a senator was a platinum card.
“I’m afraid your father is currently out of the state on an official assignment.”
Gwen’s smile faded, a crease appearing on her forehead.
“When will he be back?”
“I can’t say for sure. Maybe you should call him to find out.” The lady smiled politely.
“I already did but his number is unreachable.”
“Would you like me to drop a message with him when he returns?”
Gwen weighed her options. She knew that she wouldn’t be allowed into her father’s office in his absence.
But Nora had specifically told her to drop the accessories in her father’s office today and so far, it had beaten all security checks without raising any dust.
‘What were the odds that this nice lady would deliver it straight to her father’s office without any detour? Eighty out of a hundred?’ Gwen gambled in her thoughts.
“Ma’am.” The lady called sweetly, breaking into her thoughts.
“Yes.” Gwen finally said standing up. “You see, I wanted to surprise my father with a priceless gift for his unconditional love towards me. It would mean a lot to me if I have it delivered personally to his office.”
“But ma’am…”
Gwen put forth her right hand cutting the lady off.
“I am aware of your office rules concerning visitors. That is why I’m trusting this to you.” Gwen brought out the beautiful golden and brass table decor globe antique with a vintage stand.
“This is beautiful ma’am.” The lady maintained a professional smile.
“I know.” Gwen beamed. “Please have it delivered to my father’s office, and I’ll prefer it if you drop it on his desk. I know how much he loves these things.”
“I’ll do exactly that ma’am.” The lady carefully returned the antique to the black bag.
Gwen spared the bag one last glance before picking up her handbag in readiness to leave.
“Don’t forget to keep it on his desk. I’ll be waiting for his call to confirm he has seen it.”
“Certainly ma’am. Thanks for coming and do have a nice day.”

Earlier, before Gwen’s arrival, Senator Gregory requested an update report concerning all her movement from his head of security.
Gwen had lied to her father that she had been at her aunt’s place ever since she left the mansion.
Whereas, she never did visit her aunt’s home.
From the footage of the images captured, compiled and sent to the senator, Gwen was seen at different points in time, visiting strange neighbourhoods and interacting with suspicious-looking individuals.
But what got the senator dumfounded the most, causing his face to turn as pale as a ghost, was the content of her conversation with Harriet and a suspicious female called Nora.
Later on, when the senator was informed of Gwen’s already anticipated visit, he sent one of his disguised female security aid to discharge her and temporarily confiscate the spying accessories pending further directions.
For the next thirty minutes after Gwen left the Capitol, Senator Gregory remained inside his office, greatly shaken and contemplating what to do next.
He picked up his phone for the sixth time contemplating whether or not to call and inform Amelia about everything Gwen had said.
This unknown Nora lady was working with Gwen to destroy Amelia and she needed to be more vigilant.
Taking a deep breath to stifle his pounding heart, Senator Gregory finally dialled Amelia’s number.
When she didn’t pick up on the first ring, he became worried. He tried calling her a second time and exhaled in relief when she picked up.
“Dad!” Amelia’s voice was slightly hoarse and low, making her father wonder where she was.
“Hello, sweetheart. Am I calling at a bad time?”
“Not really.”
Senator Gregory listened to Amelia clear her throat as if she was just waking up from sleep.
“Aren’t you at work?”
“No. I’m at home.”
“At home!” Senator Gregory frowned, knowing his daughter wasn’t the lazy type. “Didn’t you go to work today? Are you all right?”
“I’m fine, Dad. I was just a little bit stressed, and the doctor insisted I rest.”
“Oh… that’s good.” Senator Gregory released a sigh of relief. “Maybe I should let you go back to bed. Let me not disturb your beauty sleep. We can talk later.”
“No…you can talk to me now, Dad. Tell me what’s wrong? I can feel the anxiety in your voice.”
“I don’t want to overstress you.” Senator Gregory pinched his forehead, already feeling guilty for disturbing Amelia’s bed rest.
“You can talk to me as long as it doesn’t have anything to do with Gwen,” Amelia stressed the last word, causing her father’s breathing to hitch.
“Umm…”
There was a hiss from the other end, and Senator Gregory could imagine his daughter’s scrunched face as she said.
“What about her?”
“I finally took your advice, and I am currently running a paternity test on her.”
“You are!”
Senator Gregory smiled as he observed the excitement in his daughter’s initial dull voice.
“Yes. She gave me reasons to, and at the moment, I am beginning to see the things you have been warning me about her.”
“What things?”
The senator hesitated about discussing such a sensitive matter on the phone before stating.
“There’s something I would like to discuss with you in person when you are feeling much better. But in the meantime, I would like you to be extra careful and make sure you are with your bodyguards at all times. I don’t want you or your baby getting harmed.”
There was a long pause from the other end before Amelia spoke up.
“Come by this evening, Dad. I’ll be waiting for you.”
