Chapter 339: Unwelcomed Visitors 1
“Greg didn’t say anything to my husband.”
“Did Desmond tell you that?” Regina asked, doubting Harriet’s words.
A deep crease appeared on Harriet’s face.
“He didn’t have to say anything. I could overhear their conversation from where my children and I were standing.”
“Maybe you didn’t hear everything right, aunt.” Gwen stepped in calmly, observing the rising tension in the room. “How about you help us inform Uncle that we are here? I’m sure he knows the hospital where Nana was admitted.”
“I’m afraid your uncle is sleeping. I do not intend to disturb him after everything he has been through. Maybe when he wakes up, I’ll ask him and I’ll call to inform you about his response.” Harriet said standing up.
“Are you indirectly asking us to leave your house?” Pearl’s expression turned grim.
“No, I haven’t said so.” Harriet forced a smile. “As you all already know, I was cooking when you came. You all have to please excuse me while I go back to the kitchen and attend to my food. Feel free to sit and wait for dinner.”
“Harriet, what is happening over there?” Desmond’s deep voice echoed from the inner room passage, causing her to freeze.
A wicked smirk slowly curled up Pearl’s lips as Desmond came into view, draped in brown knee-length sleeping robes that exposed some parts of his chest.
Desmond’s eyes were droopy, showing that he was sleeping and the noise must have woken him up.
“Baby…” Harriet hurried to her husband, smiling sweetly. “…you shouldn’t be out of bed by now. Dinner isn’t ready.”
“Welcome back, Uncle Desmond. We were just asking after you.”
Gwen’s sharp and excited voice made Harriet’s eyes darken.
“Gwen! Is that you?” Desmond left his wife’s side to go embrace his niece. “It’s been ages you look…”
“Fat?” Gwen rolled her eyes playfully at her uncle.
“Great. I was going to say you look great.” Desmond pinched her fondly on the cheek, making her giggle.
“Hello Desmond, I hope we didn’t wake you up,” Pearl said, moistening her lips slowly while winking at him.
“Not really.” Desmond turned backwards to ensure his wife wasn’t watching.
“Your wife told us you needed to rest so we won’t waste your time. All we need to know is the name of the hospital Nana was admitted.” Regina asked, beaming at the way Harriet had suddenly gone silent while backing them.
“I have no idea.”
“That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to tell you people all this while but you seem to doubt me.” Harriet finally found her voice. She spun around to face the woman, her initial warm expression gone.
“I thought you said you needed to urgently attend to the food in the kitchen?” Pearl asked, faking a sweet smile.
As if on cue, Elsie came out to call her mom’s attention.
“Honey, why don’t you go on and attend to the food while I take care of things here.”
“Sure,” Harriet replied between gritted teeth and stormed out of the sitting room without sparing a glance at the women.
Desmond waited for his wife to shut the door that led to the kitchen before he faced Pearl.
“What are you…”
“Get dressed and meet me outside,” Pearl ordered and walked out of the room.

Desmond looked towards Regina for help, but she shrugged and also left the room, leaving Gwen alone with her uncle.
“I think you two need to talk. Don’t take too long.” Gwen said in a hushed voice, before also quietly leaving the room.
Desmond sighed helplessly. He thought his extramarital relationship with Pearl ended with his imprisonment.
Unfortunately, from the hungry look in Pearl’s eyes, he knew things were about to spiral out of control unless he did something drastic to end the affair.
He let out a deep sigh and disappeared into his bedroom.
A few minutes later, he reentered the sitting room, all dressed in a sweatpants and black t-shirt paired with a black face cap and dark sunglasses.
“Where do you think you’re going to?” Harriet demanded, standing by the exit door, hands akimbo. She could already sniff a set up to take her husband out of the house and she wasn’t about to let that happen.
“I need to go visit Mom,” Desmond said, avoiding his wife’s narrowed gaze.
“Liar.” Harriet spat out.
“I promise, I am not lying.” Desmond countered in a slightly quivering voice.
“You just got back from prison. I don’t want to see you getting into trouble again.”
“I promise, I won’t. I just need to check on my mother’s state of health.” Desmond was almost pleading on his knees.
“But your elder brother told you not to bother. He said he’ll take care of everything.” Harriet fought the urge to raise her voice at her husband, especially with the children around and secretly watching.
“I know what he said. Nevertheless, I can’t let his angry words deter me from at least caring for my own mother.” Desmond explained, while inwardly cursing Pearl for trying to ruin a happy family moment with her selfishness and lust.
“I do not mean to be selfish, but you made a promise. You promised me that you wouldn’t go out today.” Tears clouded Harriet’s vision as she slowly approached her husband and wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head on his chest.
“You promised the children too that we will all have dinner together as a family. I’ve been slaving in that kitchen ever since we returned from your brother’s house. The food is ready and I don’t want it to get cold. Please stay back and share this special moment with us. I miss you so much. Don’t you miss me the way I do?”
“You have no idea how long I’ve dreamed of holding you in my arms like this,” Desmond whispered into Harriet’s ear, tightening his hold around her and kissing her on the forehead.
He wished there was a way he could confess his extramarital affairs to her and free himself from Pearl’s evil claws. But he feared he would lose her and the kids if he did.
The loud blasting sound of a car, honking outside the house told Desmond that the women were getting impatient.
“Don’t go.” Harriet started crying.
“I promise I’ll be back before you know it.” Desmond freed himself from her right hold and kissed her on the cheek before hurrying out of the house.
