Chapter 40: Maria’s Anderson’s Request.
Knock! Knock!! Knock!!!
Blaze was fixing the black silver cufflinks on the cuff of his shirt when a gentle tap on his bedroom door forced him to look up.
‘Who could that be? Eugene?’ Blaze pondered as he sauntered to the door and opened it.
“Mom!” Blaze raised his brows in surprise.
“Good morning, sweetheart.” Maria Anderson, a cheerful woman in her late forties but with a youthful vigour beamed sweetly to her son. Her eyes which were like the color of the sea foam scanned him from head to toe. “Already dressed and ready to run away as usual?”
“Good morning, mom.” Blaze embraced her and pressed his lips on her forehead before releasing her.
“And no, I’m not running away. I’m simply preparing for work.” He made way for her to enter his bedroom before shutting the door behind her.
“At 5:10 AM?” Maria eyed her son suspiciously.
“I have an early start, Mom. By the way, aren’t you supposed to be in bed?” Blaze walked back to his dresser and resumed fixing his cufflinks.
“You know me. I’m also an early bird like my son.” Maria replied, as she picked up his plain black tie on the bed and moved purposely over to him. “May I.”
“Sure mum.” Blaze raised his collar and lowered his neck, an infectious smile on his lips as he stared into his mother’s shimmery eyes. He could tell she wanted to ask for something and had a feeling that it was going to be annoying.
Maria skillfully knotted the tie just like she did in the past for her darling husband. She brought down the collar, a satisfied smile framing her face.
“There…you look as charming as your dad.”
“Thanks, Mom.” Blaze pecked her on the cheek. He moved smartly to his bed and retrieved his black suit jacket.
“Are you going to have breakfast before leaving?”
“No Mom. It’s s too early.” He smartly wore his jacket and fixed the button.
“Yeah, that’s true.” Maria inhaled wishing she could make him stay a little longer.
“Sweetheart…” Maria made her way to his bed and sat down, her gaze on him. “Can you please spare me a few minutes of your time?”
“Anything for you, Mom.” Blaze joined her on the bed and sat beside her. “So what’s up?”
“Has your grandfather spoken to you recently?”
“No. But we spoke last week.”
“What about your grandma?”
“Same thing. I spoke to both of them. But why are you asking?”
“Because I got a call from your grandma yesterday. “Maria cleared her throat. “Umm…son, you know your dad’s remembrance is around the corner, right?”
“Yeah.” A sad smile crossed Blaze’s face which also reflected in his mother’s eyes. He took his mother’s hand into his and stroked it lovingly. “Are you all right.”
Maria nodded her head. “I have you.”
“Always.” He raised the back of her hands to his lips and planted a soft kiss on it.
“Such a gentleman.” Maria dabbed at a tear that escaped her moistened eyes. She cleared her throat again and said.
“Your grandparents are planning to come over to Salvine City to honour him.”

“That will be nice.”
Maria hesitated a little before adding. “I told your grandma that you had a surprise for them”
“A surprise!” Blaze raised his left eyebrow at her.
“Yes!”
“What’s the surprise?”
“Promise me you won’t get offended.”
“Here we go again.” Blaze sighed.
“Please…”
“I’ll try not to,” Blaze said in a resigned tone.
“You know how much I love and care about you right?”
“Of course I do, mom.”
“And you also know I will always have your best interest at heart right?”
Blaze released a slightly frustrated sigh. “Mom, can you just go straight to the point? I have to be somewhere urgently and I also have a scheduled flight to catch.”
“Answer my question first.”
“Yes, I know.”
“Good. You are all I have and I’m not getting any younger. I know you promised me that you will find someone when you’re ready. But it is taking forever and I don’t see you bringing anyone home anytime soon. So I’ve taken the initiative to find your wife from a reputable family background and I’ve also informed your grandma about it.”
“You what?” Blaze was stunned. He released his hold on his mother’s hand. “Mom! How could you.”
“Here me out first.” Maria pleaded earnestly.
“I’m listening.” Blaze turned his angry face away from his mother.
“Her name is Cassandra Miles and she recently graduated med school. She’s good-looking, sweet-natured and calm, nothing like that heartless girl that left you. She will make a fine bride and she will bring you lots of happiness and peace of mind. I want grandchildren and your grandparents want to play with their great-grandchildren before they depart this world. Please, darling. Just give it a try.”
“Are you done?” Blaze asked, masking his inner fury by remaining calm. But his frigid gaze said otherwise.
“Yes. You promised you won’t be mad.”
“I’m not mad but I’m very frustrated.”
“I’m sorry, darling.”
“Have you given her name to Grandma?”
“No.” Maria shook her head. “Not yet. I just told Grandma that I have found a wife for you.”
“Very well, Grandma will be introduced to my wife when she comes around,” Blaze said standing up and picking up his phone and laptop bag.
“Really!” Maria jumped on her feet. A thrilled smile replaced her worried expression.
“Yes.”
“Oh…thank you, son.” Maria hurried over to Blaze and embraced him tenderly. “Thank you so much.”
Blaze freed herself from her warm hug and strolled smartly towards the door. He opened it slightly before dropping a bomb on his mother.
“But it’s not going to be Cassandra Miles. Mom. I have already found a wife like I promised and you will get to meet with her two days before my grandparents arrive.”
“What!” Maria’s eyes widened like a saucer.
“I love you, mom.” Blaze blew kisses to her before walking out the door.

“You have one last chance to redeem yourself. How did she get that information and who betrayed me?” A masked man said in a calm but spine-chilling voice as he slowly attached a suppressor to a Glock 19.
Seated before this calm devil and strapped to a chair inside a motel room was a badly beaten and bruised man, who also happened to be the occupant of the room. His bare body bore testament of an entire night of horrendous torture but his tormentor seemed unsatisfied with his sincerity.
“I swear…” The unfortunate man coughed out more bloodied saliva, his voice low and weak. “… I’m telling the truth.”
Cough!
Cough!!
“I have never met her. I didn’t betray you.”
“Your family will join you in hell.” The assailant pointed the pistol at the unfortunate fellow and released the trigger.
Bang!
The muffled sound of an exploding bullet pierced through the man’s forehead and ended his misery.
The devil cleared out all evidence of his presence in that room and put a call across to the motel reception.
“Cleaning services urgently needed in room 13.”
