Chapter 48: Hurtful Words
“Dad, why does Amelia get to see Grandma first when we are all here waiting to take our turn? This isn’t fair.” Gwen pouted, looking up at her father, enraged that he hadn’t scolded Amelia for insulting her mother and calling her indecent.
“Let’s not argue about this, my dear.” Senator Gregory spoke in a subtle tone, patting her on the shoulder “When Amelia comes out, you can go in and see your grandmother. Okay, sweetie?”
“Okay, Dad.” Gwen forced a smile and hugged him dearly before releasing him to go sit beside her husband.
“Greg, I know you care about your daughter so much. But you know Amelia is the reason Nana was rushed to this hospital in the first place. Aren’t you going to stop her from causing more harm? Do you want Nana to experience another attack?” Regina tried to reason with her husband.
However, instead of seeing reason with her, Regina was rebuked coldly by her husband in front of everyone.
“Don’t say such things, Gina. You and I were there when the doctor attributed Nana’s minor stroke to high cholesterol and atrial fibrillation. You shouldn’t accuse Amelia of something she isn’t responsible for.”
“But what about her unstable blood pressure, brother?” Matt said in a slightly irritated tone. “Are you seriously going to ignore that just to give in to your daughter’s selfish demands? Do not forget that the woman lying in there is also my mother.”
“Matt, how can you say something like that?” Senator Gregory frowned.
“But he is saying the truth brother.” Desmond cut in. “Mom’s condition is unstable and she does not need anyone stressing her right now. She is still angry with Amelia and her presence may instigate another crisis.”
“Fine…” Senator Gregory said coldly in a defeated voice. “I will go stand by Amelia to make sure that nothing like that ever happens.”
“I will go with you, honey.” Regina offered.
“No, sit this one out.” Senator Gregory stopped her. “Since you and Amelia can’t get along, then there is no need for you to be close to her. I will go alone.”
Regina’s scrunched face deepened. It was bad enough that Amelia had stolen all her husband’s love and affection after the death of her mother. But to continuously openly disregard her in the presence of everyone all because of that tramp had got to stop. Something has to be done permanently to fix that.
“Matt…” Senator Gregory turned his attention to his most trusted brother. “…please, see to it that no one makes another scene. Amelia and I will be out shortly.”
“Okay, brother.” Matt released a sigh.
While the senator reentered his mother’s ward, Amelia’s bodyguard took strategic positions opposite the door, keeping a respectable distance away from the glaring family.
Inside the ward, Nana Shawls was resting peacefully with eyes closed. A heart rate monitor and some other medical devices were strapped to her body.
Amelia was disheartened by her grandmother’s frail state. She felt slightly guilty for her grandmother’s condition and wished there was a way she could please the old woman without having to disagree with her.
“Miss Shawls, I will advise you to avoid any form of arguments or discussion that would trigger your grandmother’s unstable blood pressure.” The doctor advised. “She needs lots of rest and a little talking. Don’t take longer than five to ten minutes. I’ll be waiting outside.”
“Okay.” Amelia smiled in appreciation. “Thank you, doctor.”
Amelia slowly approached her grandmother’s bedside and quietly sat on the chair opposite the bed. She stared at the old woman’s wrinkled face for a while, her eyes brimming with affection as she recalled some beautiful memories of when Nana’s husband was still alive. Those were the best times in her teenage life. But after the death of her most cherished grandfather and her mother, Nana became a very bitter old woman snapping at everyone especially her.
Taking a deep breath, Amelia gently placed her hand on the old woman’s wrinkled hand and softly stroked it.
“Get your filthy hands off me, you evil child.” Nana Shawls opened her eyes, her gaze cold and bitter.
Amelia quickly withdrew her hands stunned to see the old woman glaring at her.
“I’m sorry, Nana, I thought you were asleep.”
“Why are you here?” Nana ignored her explanation.
“I came to see you,” Amelia replied in a subtle tone.
“You came to check if this wicked old woman has died just like your grandfather right?”
“Nana!”

“Don’t you dare call my name, you heartless child.” Nana’s hard gaze and hurtful words, filled Amelia’s heart with turmoil. “If I wasn’t so weak and tied to this bed, I would have taught you a very good lesson for daring to show your face in here after everything you’ve done to our family.”
“I’m sorry…”
“Shut up!” Nana Shawls angrily cut Amelia off, her raised temper causing a rise in her blood pressure and heart rate.
Just then, Senator Gregory opened the door and walked in, shutting the door behind him.
“Greg, take this heartless daughter of yours out of this place before I lose my temper.”
“Mum…”
“Grandma, please just hear me out?” Amelia went down on her knees, cutting her dad off.
“Why?” The old woman scowled at her granddaughter. “Why should I listen to anything you have to say? You finally have your mother’s money, so you can do whatever you like and treat your family like used tissue paper.”
“No…”
“Shut up!”
Amelia bit down on her inner lips, her eyelid burning with tears.
“Take a good look at you…” Nana Shawls forced herself to sit up against the doctors’ advice. “…a child I watched breathe her first air in this world. A child I changed her diapers and sang lullabies to. A child I watched take her first baby step. Even though your mother disgusted me, I was there for you. And now you have suddenly grown so big that she can decide to ignore or even bounce my calls. You can decide to throw wild parties and divorce your husband even without my consent. You can even get married to a total stranger, ridiculing this family’s good name. You are a disappointment, Amelia. My Willie thought you were a good child but I always knew you were pretending. You are a true replica of your mother. But don’t worry, I will soon be joining my Willie so that I won’t have to bother you anymore.”
