Chapter 49: Hurtful Words 1
“I’m sorry.” Amelia battered her eyelashes severally to push back the tears. But that didn’t stop them from falling.
“Mom, please don’t talk like this.” Senator Gregory walked up to her bedside and sat down beside her. “You know Amelia cares so much about you. How can you talk about joining Dad? Don’t you love your children anymore? Do you know how that will affect us?”
“It’s all your fault, Greg.” Nana Shawls turned her anger to her first son. “You are the reason why your daughter is ill-mannered and uncultured.”
“Grandma…”
“Get out.” Nana Shawls’ voice hardened.
“Nana, please. Just hear me out this once.”
“What are you going to say? That you’re sorry.”
“Yes. I’m truly sorry for not taking your calls or checking up on you for the past few days. I’m sorry I divorced Jerry without carrying you along. Even though I was hurt and trying to get rid of my pain, it was selfish of me.”
“I’m glad you know that you are a very selfish and heartless child.” Tears slowly gathered at the corner of the old woman’s light blue eyes filling Amelia with more internal agony. “You are the reason why I’m in this state and I hope you can sleep with your conscience.”
“Nana…” Amelia tried to touch her, but she shifted her body away.
“Leave and don’t ever come back here again.”
“Grandma!” Amelia’s heart was breaking.
“I said leave.” Nana Shawls shouted, attracting the attention of the doctor and those standing outside.
“Honey, I think you should go.” Senator Greg pleaded while holding onto his mother, whose body was trembling with so much fury.
Matt and Regina, who had been patiently waiting for Nana Shawls to lose her temper hurriedly rushed into the VIP ward with the doctor.
“Brother, didn’t I warn you that you will get Mom agitated.” Matt hurried past Amelia to attend to his mother who was now crying while the doctor helped to stabilize the old woman.
“Have you seen what you have caused you selfish girl? You are always thinking about yourself and never others.” Regina took this opportunity to retaliate for Amelia’s earlier insult.
“Gina, please don’t start.” Senator Gregory warned as he left his mother’s side to allow the doctor and Matt to attend to her.
Amelia slowly rose to her feet, feeling downcast and defeated. She refused her father to console her, urging him to go back to the old woman.
“Will you be fine?” Senator Gregory asked.
“Yes, Dad.” Amelia spared her grandmother one last glance before leaving the ward. As she opened the door, she wasn’t surprised to see Gwen and Jerry’s both holding hands and standing by the door.
“Oh my dear sister, did grandma kick you out? Poor you.” Gwen sighed, her eyes glistening with a wicked smile. She moved close to touch Amelia’s face.
But Amelia slapped her hand away.
“Get out of my way.” Amelia spat out between clenched teeth, her angry and vicious glares sending shivers down Gwen’s spine.
“Easy, wild cat. You don’t have to be so mean. I was just trying to be empathetic.” Gwen moved away from the door, pulling Jerry to her side to prevent him from touching Amelia.
“Where is your so called husband, huh? Or is it possible that he’s one of those steroid-filled puppies hovering around you?” Jerry taunted, ignoring her bodyguards who were snarling at him.
Amelia’s reddened eyes narrowed at Gwen and Jerry, her fist clenched. She inhaled and exhaled to stifle her emotions, not wanting to create another scene.
“You both can get lost.” She hissed before walking past them, intentionally brushing Gwen on the shoulder.
“Why don’t you get lost first.” Jerry scoffed as he disappeared into the ward, shutting the door behind him.

“How the mighty have fallen?” Pearl, who had been patiently waiting for Amelia, taunted. “Do you need me to get you some tissues to wipe your ugly face? It wouldn’t look nice for your many fans out there to see you crying like a baby.”
“Pearl, that is not nice.” Lilian stood up to console Amelia. “You shouldn’t make fun of people’s emotions.”
“The hippo finally speaks.” Pearl snorted, earning her Desmond’s disapproval. But since she was Desmond’s side chick, he didn’t say anything to defend his sister-in-law.
“Pearl, do not tempt me. I may just sit on your head.” Lilian warned, instantly shutting the terrified Pearl up. She returned her gaze to Amelia who was already walking away from her.
“Amelia wait!” Lilian hurried over to her but halted when Pascal and Clay stopped her.
“Aunt Lillian, I’m sorry. I really need to go.” Amelia said, without looking up at her.
“Please take care of yourself and don’t forget you have me.”
“Thank you.” A thin smile crossed Amelia’s lips as she turned her face towards the hallway exit door. She took the elevator with her bodyguard to the first floor, her head lowered due to her reddened eyes.
“Pascal, I need to quickly use the convenience. Wait for me at the reception.” Amelia instructed before leaving for the Ladies.
Inside the ladies, she walked into one of the empty toilet cubicles and sat down on the closed toilet seat, tears streaming down her reddened eyes.
“You are strong, intelligent and beautiful,” Amelia said to herself, sniffling. “You are the best version of yourself. No one should steal your smile.” She opened her handbag and brought out her makeup wipes and her small make-up mirror. She carefully dabbed at her moist eyes and decided washing her face would be better.
Taking a deep breath, she stood up and flushed the toilet which she didn’t use. She came out of the toilet and moved to the wash basin.
Lifting up the handle of the faucet, she lowered her head and rinsed her face.
When she lifted her head up to face the mirror, she was startled to see a woman with a striking pair of light blue eyes staring lovingly at her.
“My dear, are you all right?”
