Chapter 82: Furious Mother

“Madam…”

“Do you have any idea of what you just did?”

“Madam, please calm down. The people your daughter and son-in-law messed with are equally more powerful.” The stout bald man with bushy eyebrows and fox-like eyes said in a pleading tone, in an attempt to placate the angry woman yelling at him.

“Really?” Regina spat out between gritted teeth. “Because they are powerful, they think they can intimidate my daughter and my family? Because my husband isn’t currently in town, you think you can talk to me in that manner?”

“Mrs Shawls, can you just calm down and let me explain?” The chief of police tried to reason with her.

“Do not tell me to calm down, Mr Fabian.” Regina continued to yell at the top of her voice. “You of all people know my husband is an honest serving senator. You know my family too well to insult us in this manner. We are respectable citizens of this city. Money is not our problem. How could you accuse my daughter of breaking and entering, not to talk of stealing? This is unacceptable. I want to see those idiots who accused my daughter. I am going to sue all of them for this embarrassment. And then I will sue you for for negligence and defaming of character.”

Mr Fabian’s forehead furrowed at her threat. For the past five minutes since this woman entered his office, she have been barking at his face, insulting him and all his officers. And now she was crossing the line by threatening him. He pursed his lips and said.

“Mrs Shawls, I understand that you are angry that your daughter and son-in-law got arrested. But I will no longer tolerate you insulting me in my office or threatening me. I’m only according to you the respect deserving of a senator’s wife. If you won’t sit down and wait for your daughter and son-in-law to come in here and explain themselves to you, you might as well wait outside my office.”

“What!” Regina’s jaws dropped.

“You heard me.” Mr Fabian said dryly. “If you won’t sit down and let me explain, then I see no point wasting my time listening to you.”

Just then a knock was heard on the door.

“Come in.” Mr Fabian barked, taking his seat.

The door was pushed open and a female police officer peeked inside.

“Chief the culprits are here.”

Regina turned to scowl at the female police officer for calling her daughter and son-in-law, ‘the culprits’.

“Send them in.”

“You also have more visitors, both parents of the male culprit.”

“Send all of them in.” Mr Fabian waved his hand dismissively.

Regina held her breath, her eyes still glued on the door as the female police officer made way for Gwen and Jerry to be escorted in, both of them in handcuffs.

They were closely followed by Mr and Mrs Morgan who were equally shocked and terrified to see their son and daughter-in-law looking a bit pale and manhandled.

While Mr and Mrs Morgan focused on their son, cuddling and questioning him, Regina focused her attention on her daughter.

“Jesus! Gwen!” Regina almost had a heart attack when her eyes fell on her daughter’s face which was still a bit swollen and reddened, with fading bold hand prints.

“Who did this to you?” Regina hurried over to her daughter, tears gathering in the corner of her eyes. She tried to touch Gwen’s swollen face and the latter winced in pain.

“Mom, stop. It still hurts.” Gwen cried, relieved to finally see her mother after almost escaping death at the hands of those monsters. She hugged her mom and cried in the latter’s arms.

“Tell me who did this to you right now and I will have them beaten and thrown into the darkest prison in this country,” Regina said assessing her daughter for any other physical injury on her body.

“Just take me home Mom. I want to leave this godforsaken place.” Gwen lamented, her body still shaking from the torture she received the previous night.

“Can you please take off these cuffs,” Regina shouted at the cops who had escorted Gwen and Jerry inside.

The officer in charge looked up at the chief of police who gave him a nonverbal permission to go ahead.

“Dimwit!” Regina cursed out loud as the cuffs were removed from her daughter’s wrist followed by that on her son-in-law’s.

“Now, can we all sit down.” The chief of police gestured to all of them. “We can settle all of these amicably without it getting escalated.”

“No way.” Regina barked at the chief again, earning her a scowl from the chief and the other cops in the office. “We will not settle any of these amicably. I want to see the bastards who did this to my daughter. I want them arrested for assault and battery. Can you do that? Can you do your goddamn job?”

“Mom please just do what….”

“Keep quiet Gwen and let me handle this.” Regina snapped at her daughter.

“Regina, I think you should listen to your daughter and…”

“Shut up Jerry ” Regina narrowed glares shut invisible fiery darts at Jerry. “I can’t believe you were with Gwen and someone would do this to her. I am so disappointed in you.”

Jerry’s fist clenched, but his mother was quick to ease his rage.

“I’m still waiting to meet with those fools,” Regina demanded.

Mr Fabian took in a deep breath to calm the storm raging inside of him. “I’m afraid that can’t happen, Mrs Shawls. “But if you sit down, I’m sure we can…”

“I said I want to see those baboons now, goddammit,” Regina yelled stomping her heel on the floor.

“That is it.” The chief snapped angrily. “Officers take them away. Return the criminals to their cell and escort these people out of this station. You can send your lawyers over and they will handle this in court.”

“Fine. But you will be so sorry.” Regina was more infuriated than ever.

“What?” Gwen cried out.

“Regina, you can’t do that.” Jerry panicked.

“We are guilty of the offence, Mom,” Gwen said, confessing to a crime she knew nothing about.

“Gwen, are you out of your mind? Do not say anything until the lawyer arrives.” Regina said in a rebuking tone while dialing a number on her phone.

“Can you just listen to me for a second and do as I say?” Gwen angrily slapped her mother’s expensive phone off her hands causing it to crash on the floor. “I said Jerry and I are guilty and we are willing to settle out of court.”
