Chapter 40: News About Their Parents
Shye looked at the Nightbringer with sparkling eyes. After purchasing his first set of armor, window shopping for equipment became his beloved hobby.
During the past five months, he focused on increasing his strength so he didn’t get the chance to improve his equipment and now, the equipment enthusiast, Shye, was given a sick-looking weapon which he had no chance of obtaining anytime soon.
He was practically inwardly jumping up and down in excitement and happiness as he took the Nightbringer from Dean Snowcrest with shaking hands.
“T-Thank you for your trust, Dean Snowcrest. I, Shye Crowley, promise to not let down Colzen Adventurer Academy in the competition three years from now.”
Shye wasn’t the type to make promises like this but his mind wasn’t clear at the moment due to how excited he was so he unconsciously blurted out a guarantee to Dean Snowcrest.
After hearing Shye’s guarantee, a wide smile appeared on Dean Snowcrest’s face. He had high expectations for this talented guy and he would do everything to groom him to the best of his abilities.
During the past competitions, Colzen Adventurer Academy always failed to get out of the group stages.
It has been two decades since they last managed to get into the top 64 in the region rankings and even then, they immediately lost the first match.
Due to this, the budget provided to them by the World Adventurer Association is slowly getting smaller and smaller which makes it harder and harder for them to make a comeback.
Similarly, the top ten adventurer academies of the region have always been consistent so their budgets aren’t changing that much which lets them cement their top position for decades.
But this year, the four deans of Colzen Adventurer Academy had high hopes of not only making it to the top 64 but also possibly making it into the top 16.
This is because the Colzen Monastery managed to obtain a genius freshman priestess which gave them a bit of hope.
But they knew that a genius freshman priestess alone wouldn’t be able to carry them throughout the entire Adventurer Academy Competition.
Fortunately, the recent batch of freshman students from all courses gave them lots of pleasant surprises.
For the mage course, there were two rival mages David Houdini and Harry Copperfield.
Next, for the scout course, there was the unexpected dark horse, Ian Izanagi who defeated both the top 1 and top 2 scouts.
As for the archer class, the top 1 archer, Kiin Wujin, destroyed the other classes by himself.
Lastly, for the warrior class, Siegfried Lionheart was one of the most talented warriors to ever grace Colzen Adventurer Academy and of course, the guy who defeated him, Shye Crowley, was probably the most talented and mysterious dark horse in the history of the academy.
With this lineup, Colzen Adventurer Academy had the strongest batch of freshmen in the entire history of the academy which made them hope for a higher ranking.
Three years from now, they hoped that their academy would finally make waves in the region.
After their agenda with the dean, Shye and Instructor Fienna turned around to leave the office but just as Shye reached the door, Dean Snowcrest stopped them.
“Wait! I have wanted to ask since earlier but…Are you related to the diamond-ranked Crowley couple who went missing four and a half years ago?”
Shye’s pupils constricted after hearing about his parents. Although his heart has been healing steadily during the past four and a half years, there’s still a part of him that longs for his parents.
Hearing about them today, he couldn’t help but become agitated. Missing? Weren’t they confirmed to be dead already?
He was confused but he started to have some hope that his parents were alive.
“Yes! I’m their son! Do you have any news or at least a clue about what happened to them?”
Shye asked Dean Snowcrest with a desperate look.
Dean Snowcrest and Instructor Fienna looked at each other before shaking their heads. The dean looked deeply at Shye and said
“Now is not the time to tell you, trust me on this one. Continue to grow stronger and once the time is right, I shall tell you what I know.”
Shye clenched his fists after hearing Dean Snowcrest’s reply. He wanted to be angry at them but he knew that they were correct and he was still too weak and inexperienced to accomplish anything.

Thus, Shye vowed to do everything to improve as much as possible in the next four years.

Chapter 41: Flashy Adventurer System – Lv.2
Currently, Shye is alone in his room. The lights inside his room were turned off and he was sitting on his bed with a lost expression as he remembered the moments that he and Maia shared with their parents.
After hearing that their parents aren’t confirmed to be dead yet, Shye started to harbor some hope inside his heart.
However, he didn’t tell Maia anything yet since it was still unknown if their parents were still alive.
Shye knew that he couldn’t rush things or he himself might end up dead. If fate allows it then they shall reunite again with their parents but for now, he has to grow as strong as possible.
He forced himself to snap out of his thoughts because he knew that idling around like this wouldn’t help him accomplish anything.
To cheer himself up, he took out the Nightbringer and tried swinging it around inside his spacious room.
His mood visibly lightened upon feeling that the weight of the Nightbringer seemed to be tailor-made for him.
“What an amazing sword!”
Shye couldn’t help but compliment the sword. Not only was it aesthetically pleasing, it was also perfect for killing creatures.
[Congratulations, You’ve gained an attribute: Strength + 1]
“Oh?”
Shye was pleasantly surprised, failing to notice that he had already been swinging the Nightbringer for around two hours and that he even gained one point of strength from it.
Due to the system notification, Shye suddenly remembered that this seemed to be the perfect time to explore the system further.
The classes for this semester had just ended and he had nothing to do. It was too late to go adventuring now and he wasn’t really in the mood for it so he might as well just explore the Flashy Adventurer System.
Shye’s mood improved again after seeing the total points that he earned in the final match against Siegfried.
[Current Points: 7580]
If he pumped all of his points into his attributes, he would probably be undefeatable even when compared to second-year students.
Shye excitedly tried to upgrade his strength attribute which currently had a value of 41 however, his plans were immediately ruined after a notification suddenly popped up.
[Failed to upgrade the attribute, please upgrade the system.]
His brows furrowed after seeing the notification.
“Oh…So there’s an attribute upgrade limit per system level huh?”
Shye tried upgrading other attributes and there was no problem until the attributes hit 40. Upgrading his agility by 5 and dexterity by 1 didn’t affect his points that much and he still had 7220 points left.
He checked his status to see if he could upgrade anything else and upon seeing that only the intelligence status was left, Shye felt that as a warrior, upgrading the intelligence attribute wasn’t really worth it right now.
Status:

[Wisdom : 6]
[Back] [Exit System]
———————————————————————————
Shye decided to click the [Upgrade System to Lv.2] button and a prompt appeared asking him to confirm if he wanted to spend his points to upgrade the system.
[Do you want to spend 5000 points to upgrade the system to level 2?] [Y/N]
His eyes widened upon seeing the cost of the system upgrade. However, he knew that he had to upgrade the system if he wanted to unlock more of its functionality so he clicked [Y] with a heavy heart.
[Y]
A dark aura suddenly surrounded him and although he didn’t feel any discomfort, he was quite surprised by what was happening.
Fortunately, he upgraded the system inside his room. If he decided to upgrade it outside, he would surely attract unwanted attention.
Finally, after a few more minutes, the dark aura dispersed and a notification popped up in front of him.
[Congratulations, Shye Crowley, you have successfully upgraded the Flashy Adventurer System to Lv.2! Please see the list of unlocked functions below]
> Attributes can now be upgraded up to 80 points
> Vitality attribute can now be upgraded through the system
> Some items and skills have now been unlocked and you may purchase them through the system
> You have unlocked [Regular Quests]

Shye clenched his fists in excitement. If the system is already like this at level 2, then how many more secrets will he unlock in the future?
