Chapter 536: Jumpscare
Shye couldn’t help but inwardly chuckle at Siegfried’s slightly nervous appearance.
It was the first time he had seen the battle maniac with such a stiff expression, and he found it naturally amusing.
‘Well, it should go away once he’s in combat’
As for Shye, he wasn’t nervous at all, as he had already completed lots of quests inside death zones.
Although he initially had Zeth’s assistance, they would eventually hunt separately.
However, they naturally hunted in close proximity to each other, ready to assist if problems arose.
Naturally, it was mostly the familiar aiding the master, as Shye was still adjusting to the speed and strength of (S-) ranked monstrous creatures.
Zeth, on the other hand, was strong enough to easily slay the weaker ones and hold her own against the strongest of creatures.
The past few months of training weren’t wasted, as Shye had become strong enough to hunt (S-) ranked creatures alone.
However, despite being eager to try, he had not yet attempted to hunt a legendary (S) ranked creature on his own.
“Hmm…based on the map, the nest must be around here somewhere…” Shye muttered.
After walking for around three hours while chatting, the two of them finally arrived at the marked location, but unfortunately, they still had to look for the Dragrex’s nest.
Siegfried, aiming to complete the quest as efficiently as possible, proposed an idea:
“Should we split up? It would be easier to look for the nest that way.”
Hearing Siegfried’s words, Shye was tempted.
However, ultimately, sound reasoning prevailed thanks to Shye’s high intelligence and wisdom attributes.
“Let’s not do that. Even if it takes a bit more time to find the nest, it would be safer if we watch each other’s backs while searching.”
Siegfried felt genuinely relieved after hearing Shye’s decision, as he had only suggested splitting up because he didn’t want to hold Shye back.
In truth, he was a bit apprehensive about venturing alone into the death zone, especially since it was his first time entering one.
After all, (A-) ranked monstrous creatures were the weakest inhabitants of such a dangerous adventuring zone.
“Alright, let’s do that.”
Since the duo decided to look for the nest together, it took them around an hour before they managed to find some clues.
Taking cover behind an old spruce tree surrounded by thickets, Siegfried discovered an old, chipped scale with a color similar to dirt.
If he hadn’t accidentally pushed it sideward with the corner of his warrior boots, he might not have noticed it at all.
“Crowley, take a look at this,” Siegfried whispered as he handed the scale to Shye, immediately taking on the role of lookout while his partner examined the old scale.
“Great job, Sieg. This is indeed the scale of a Dragrex. We must be close to its nest.”
Based on the information Shye gathered from the Adventurer Encyclopedia, now at level four, Dragrexes shed bits and pieces of their scales around the outermost parts of their territory to warn other monstrous creatures of intrusions.
Which means…
‘As long as we keep advancing from where we found this scale, we’re bound to stumble upon its nest!’
Unfortunately, a straight path has always been the quickest way, but not the safest.

Shye also knew this.
However, despite the slightly tense exterior that was visible to Siegfried, he was actually inwardly confident, as he had already hunted multiple (S-) ranked monstrous creatures in the past.
Therefore, he chose to take the direct route, despite its slightly higher risk.
It didn’t mean that the two of them wouldn’t carefully advance, though.
With Siegfried trailing closely, Shye used his skill, [Mana Pulse], to navigate through the Dragrex’s territory, ensuring they would be the first to spot it rather than the other way around.
However, there was a crucial piece of information that the level four Adventurer Encyclopedia failed to mention: certain variant Dragrexes could camouflage themselves using a skill known as [Chameleon Skin] and evade detection with another skill named [Hide].
Naturally, since Shye didn’t know that there was a possibility of such danger, he confidently advanced.
Around fifteen minutes later, the two of them finally located the nest.
However, although there were two eggs in the middle of the nest, the Dragrex was nowhere to be found.
‘Hoh…so this Dragrex we’re hunting is a female, huh?’ Shye mused, turning his head towards Siegfried the next moment.
“Yo, Sieg, stay hidden here and keep an eye on the eggs. I’ll scout the surrounding areas to look for signs of where it could possibly come from.”
“Alright, leave it to me.”
After a short conversation, Shye left, circling the area to check for the Dragrex’s traces.
Unfortunately, despite meticulously circling the area for half an hour, he found nothing, which was rather strange.
‘Well, if it wouldn’t appear anytime soon, I suppose it’s best to take its eggs first,’ Shye pondered, his mind entertaining ideas of taming the little Dragrexes after the eggs hatched.
Since he found nothing, Shye decided to return to where Siegfried was.
“Sieg, I’m back.”
“Crowley, any signs of the Dragrex?”
Shye responded by shaking his head with a perplexed expression.
“So…what’s the plan now?”
“Well, for now, let’s get those valuable eggs!”
“Exactly my thoughts!”
Eagerly scanning their surroundings before darting in to snatch an egg apiece, Shye and Siegfried hurried back to their initial positions, breathing heavily with excitement as they leaned against a nearby tree trunk.
Unfortunately, they missed the “tree trunk” twitching suddenly, and one of the tree’s sizable “leaves” blinked unexpectedly, slowly unveiling a yellow eye with a slender black pupil, glaring furiously at the two of them.
Soon after, a chill crawled down the spines of the two young adventurers, as the specter of death whispered ominously from behind.
With no time to signal each other, Shye and Siegfried swiftly darted to the sides, narrowly evading a colossal claw that crashed violently onto the ground.
*ROAR!*
A deafening roar erupted from behind, assaulting Shye and Siegfried’s eardrums and causing their hearts to race uncontrollably due to an unexpected jumpscare.
Shye had his mana pulse active the whole time, yet, it failed to detect anything.
Hence, this sudden attack was truly a huge surprise.
Turning around after stabilizing their footing, their eyes widened as a ten-meter-tall creature emerged from the clouds of dust.
It had wings, yet, it was crawling on all fours like a tiger.
Its head resembled that of an enormous toothed lizard, while its body was dragon-like, covered in tough, earth-colored scales and adorned with massive spikes along its formidable spine.
“Dragrex!” The two exclaimed in unison.
‘Where the f*ck did this thing come from?!’
