Chapter 558: A Better Scout Than A Scout
“YOU!! THERE SHOULD BE A LIMIT TO YOUR ARROGANCE!! WHY EXPLAIN IT ONLY TO RAI HOU AND NOT TO THE REST OF US?!” Dalton shouted furiously, drawing his mace and nearly charging at Shye before Mira intervened.
“Heh, first of all, I don’t trust most of you to keep my abilities a secret, except for Rai Hou and Mira. As for Mira, I’m not telling her because she’s too kind-hearted and might not be able to resist your persistent questioning. It’s better if she doesn’t know.” Shye explained with a sneer, turning to Rai Hou before asking:
“So, shall we proceed?”
“RAI HOU!! YOU BETTER NOT HAND THE LEADERSHIP OVER TO THIS BASTARD OR ELSE W–”
“Or else what? Do you have any other options? We can turn back right now if you prefer. However, I’ll be reporting that the three of you refused to follow the leader’s orders and acted selfishly, causing the mission to fail and resulting in Koneko Kaneko’s death,” Rai Hou said coldly.
He was so done with darned troublemakers.
“R-RAI HOU!! YOU!! YOU’RE SIDING WITH THIS BASTARD?! THIS…THIS BACKWATER RAT?!” Dalton exclaimed disbelievingly.
“Yes, because he’s evidently stronger than you three, at least. Also, I believe this guy doesn’t talk bullshit, unlike you three. So, what will it be? Will you accept his arrangements? Will we turn back? Or perhaps…you wanna fight me?”
This time, the three of them could tell that the Yon Augenn champion was genuinely furious.
Who could blame him?
They were already in a dire situation, yet Walter, Dalton, and Freeze insisted on causing trouble simply because they refused to accept someone from a region ranked far lower than theirs as a leader.
…It took the three troublemakers half a minute of pondering with gritted teeth and clenched fists before one of them made a decision.
Walter, as the smartest one out of the three, immediately understood that the best course of action was to allow Shye to lead.
It was just that his pride as someone from a high-ranked region was in the way.
However, realizing that none of the options Rai Hou presented were acceptable, it quickly became a matter of choosing the lesser evil.
They were afraid of confronting the renowned Rai Hou.
On the other hand, turning back and being reported for insubordination to the WAA would be detrimental to their careers, potentially leading to their dismissal as regional champions.
Hence, the best choice for them would be to submit to Shye’s leadership, at least until the mission was over.
“I-I shall agree to whatever you decide on, Rai Hou,” Walter said through gritted teeth, prompting the other two to do the same.
“Good. Wait here, I shall talk to Crowley.”
Satisfied with the decision of the three troublemakers, Rai Hou nodded approvingly before turning to Shye, signaling for him to follow.
Once they were about ten meters away from the group, Rai Hou activated one of his skills, creating a sound suppression barrier around them.
“F*ck! I can’t hear anything, Rai Hou must’ve set up a sound suppression barrier…” Freeze cursed in a low voice.
Sound suppression barriers were essential for archers, enabling them to launch lethal attacks undetected and increasing their chances of assassinating a target from a concealed position.
Freeze was aware of this as well.
He just took a chance, hoping Rai Hou would be careless.
Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain, as Rai Hou was meticulous in everything he did.
This naturally disappointed the other two, who were also keen to learn Shye’s secrets to get even with him in the future.
…”So, Shye Crowley, how do you plan to act as the lead scout and navigate the party safely through the dark dungeon?” Rai Hou asked with a cold gaze.
He decided to go all out in trusting the mysterious Valenzian champion in hopes of salvaging the terrible situation.

If Shye turned out to be “playing pranks” on him out of overconfidence, Rai Hou would certainly show him why he made it to the top of the most competitive region of Adthiopia.
Luckily, it didn’t seem that he would have to take action, as Shye naturally had his own plans.
“First, my eyes can see up to fifty meters in this darkness, so navigating through the pathways will be no problem even without those ineffective night vision goggles.”
Hearing Shye’s words, Rai Hou’s eyes narrowed. He couldn’t just believe whatever Shye said.
“Hmm… you say that, but how can I be sure your words are true?”
“Heh, it’s simple. Twenty-five meters to your right, there’s a muddy patch on the ground. Check if I’m telling the truth.”
This was indeed a feasible way to check if Shye was telling the truth.
Hence, Rai Hou immediately walked twenty-five meters to his right, nearly slipping on the muddy patch when he arrived.
He then returned to where Shye was with little difficulty.
“Fine, I shall believe you can see in the dark.” Rai Hou said, evidently pleased with Shye’s ability. “However, I believe you also know that this alone wouldn’t be enough to lead us to the tenth floor safely.”
“Of course,” Shye replied, pausing for a moment to activate the new [Warning] mode gained by his [Mana Pulse] skill upon reaching level three.
“I also have a detection skill with a range of thirty meters. Imagine it as a detection sphere that extends in all directions, including upwards and underground. It can even identify monstrous creatures concealed in voids and spatial pockets.”
“I guarantee that no creature will be able to ambush us, regardless of its type. However, this skill isn’t reliable for detecting traps, so we’ll still have to rely on that incompetent idiot over there.”
Shye’s explanation of his detection skill sent shivers down Rai Hou’s spine.
The Yon Augenn champion didn’t dare hope that Shye, a warrior-class adventurer, could fully replace Koneko.
It would be sufficient if he could at least perform half as well as the young female scout.
So, upon hearing that Shye’s detection skill might be even better than Koneko’s and that he could see in the dark, hope began to blossom in Rai Hou’s heart.
However, he naturally had to verify if it was true first.
Fortunately, there was no need for him to speak, as shortly after, an azure sphere emanated from Shye and successfully enveloped Rai Hou.
The young Yon Augenn champion then sensed that he had been detected and that the detector was alerting him to stay away.
“Wha–”
“That just now is my detection skill’s [Warning] mode. Do you need any more proof?”
“No need, this is good enough.”
With a slightly racing heart, Rai Hou returned to where the others were waiting, Shye following behind him.
“I’ve concluded that his capabilities as a lead scout are more than sufficient. Therefore, I hereby officially appoint Shye Crowley as the leader of this extermination party!”
