Chapter 597: The Surgeon Of The Shadows And The Overpowered Priestess
The scorching midmorning rays of the royal sun shone upon the vast, bustling streets of Valenzia, where two striking youths—one young man and one young woman, both gorgeous, strolled, heading towards their guild.
However, what their hearts felt differed.
The young man, despite his seemingly deadpan exterior, was as happy as a clam, his mind serene for he had removed one of the largest amongst the thorns embedded in his heart.
On the other hand, the young woman wasn’t so happy.
Shirley, after learning of such grim news, was extremely shocked, her heart and mind in utter turmoil.
She hadn’t expected that the burdens shouldered by her dearest had, all this time, been so heavy.
She was happy, yes, that she was able to bear half of it for her beloved.
Yet, at the same time, she feared for their future and their children’s. Once, it had been bright as the blinding midmorn skies; now, dark as eternal night.
Luckily, her worries weren’t destined to last long, for as they arrived at the main branch, they were greeted by two more familiar faces, blowing Shirley’s worries away, even if only temporarily.
“Wendy! Ian!” Shye and Shirley exclaimed in unison upon seeing the familiar backs of their close friends who were walking towards the entrance, prompting them to turn around and look back.
“Shye! Shirley!” The other duo exclaimed, equally delighted.
They had not seen their friends in a long time.
Shirley was equally close to the other six representatives from Colzen, if not more.
For when Shye was gone, trapped deep in the somber tomb for a year and a half with his fate unknown, ’twas she who became his replacement—the other brave sword of the Colzen Seven who protects those at the back, as unwavering and ever-valiant as her dearest half.
Had he not made it back on time, Shirley would’ve fought for their alma mater’s glory in his stead.
Laying his gaze for long upon the two newcomers of the main, Shye swiftly noticed the changes in their dispositions, both the good and the bad.
Wendy seemed now even more free and lighthearted, having experienced the world; and yet, her once admirable, borderline hilarious innocence was now gone, for she had experienced the world and its evil.
She learned she wouldn’t have survived with her excessively kind and innocent self.
She had to adapt.
Meanwhile, the Colzen scout appeared bolder and braver, shedding his old shell of slight reservation and casting it away, discarding it as he faced forward without hesitation, never looking back.
He was also now more cunning and decisive, ready to slaughter in cold blood at a moment’s notice, seemingly harboring deep-seated rage and resentment in his heart—a vendetta that could only be resolved through gory violence.
‘Twas a good change in terms of worldly survival, yet also a bad one, as he seemed to have, for quite a while, lost his kindness toward others, except for those closest to him—those whom his now icy heart trusts.
It seemed difficult to thaw the cold, and that only father time had the cure.
“I see you’ve finally made it to the main branch!” Shye said with a congratulatory smile, genuinely happy for the two.
“Hehe, yes. Ian would’ve likely arrived sooner, though, if he hadn’t waited for me. He joked that your instructions to escort me safely from the day we all parted felt like an eternal curse, hahaha!”
Shockingly, it was Wendy who replied first with the cutest of laughter, evidently more outgoing and mature than she had ever been.
The couple was naturally surprised, but they were fully on board with it.
The Wendy Primrose of today certainly wasn’t so hilariously naïve as to ask for eggs in a business deal. It seemed that they no longer needed to hold back when joking with her.
“Hmph! Indeed! If I hadn’t waited for her, I might not have lost to you in getting here first,” Ian boasted, half-jokingly.
Before Shye could respond, familiar voices echoed once again, this time coming from inside the guild.

“Hahahaha! Ian, I see you still know how to joke around.” Kiin laughed, playfully mocking Ian while Siegfried and Lesurii walked behind him.
Surprised was the surgeon of the shadows, disbelief written on his face.
Ian believed that his progress had been quick due to a severe setback he secretly harbored, thus not expecting Siegfried and Kiin to have already made it to the big stage before him—especially Shirley, who he once unconsciously viewed as inferior to him in the past.
His friends seemed more trustworthy now than ever. The wintry vendetta in his heart shall be resolved in due time.
Advance forth he shall, for now along with his closest of comrades.
“Hmph! Kiin, I see you’ve become more arrogant just because you arrived here a few days before me. However, I was promoted two months ago; I only delayed my arrival to wait for Wendy. Isn’t that right, Wendy?”
“Hahaha, certainly. Ian did indeed wait for me.” Wendy confirmed with a smile, now appreciating the friendly banter she couldn’t when she was younger.
She was naive back then and failed to grasp the essence of her friends’ jests. But now, naive she was no longer, and she could understand that this was how close friends interacted.
“Ha! Even so! You dare claim you could’ve gotten here earlier than Shye? He was promoted a year ago! Hahaha!” Kiin retorted, laughing in amusement upon seeing Wendy and Ian’s dumbfounded expressions.
“I-Is that true, Shye?” The surgeon of the shadows asked rather meekly in disbelief.
“Hahahaha! Ian! Who do you think I am?! I’m the Colzen Seven’s captain! Such feats are natural to me!” Shye boasted jestingly, eliciting chuckles from everyone.
After joking around for a while, Shye offered to treat everyone to lunch.
Thus, after registering the newcomers with both the guild and his division, the Colzen cohort, along with Lesurii and Luna, left the guild and headed to a restaurant that was a favorite haunt of Shye’s.
There, they caught up, recounting old tales, boasting about achievements, and laughing at funny stories.
This, in turn, allowed the non-Colzen individuals to witness the close bonds within the Championship Seven, leading them to desire to be part of the circle.
It was a rare moment of peace in a world headed for ruin. A much-needed break for Shirley’s overwhelmed heart.
Shye scanned his eyes over the scene, a warm smile emerging as he enjoyed every single moment.
He then looked out the restaurant’s window.
‘I hope this could last forever…’
Unfortunately, he knew it wouldn’t as eternal darkness was upon them. Fiercely would they have to fight for a chance at such a scene again in the future.
‘The important pieces are slowly falling into place,” he pondered. ‘I’ll need to make my move soon. Harry, David, you both must arrive as quickly as possible.’
