Chapter 608: The Weakest Link
Shye found the reactions of the familiar spirits quite amusing and glanced at his own familiar.
Zeth, eager to impress her master, held her head high, clearly proud of her reputation.
‘Hmph! At least these weaklings know their place. If they choose to challenge me, I’ll make their deaths quick and painless,’ she communicated telepathically, almost making Shye chuckle aloud as if the situation weren’t dire.
However, shortly after, Shye noticed an important point.
‘Hey, Zeth, can’t you speak out loud like them?’
‘Hmph! Naturally, I can’t. I’ve ascended multiple times, losing the ability to speak in a mundane way and instead gaining the capacity to resonate on a higher level with my master and future ones. These weaklings, on the other hand, have no choice but to open their mouths and let their spit fly clumsily as they try to communicate their thoughts.’
He didn’t know much about the spirit world, so he simply nodded at Zeth’s words, fully believing her. After all, she was someone who despised lying.
There was no need for him to doubt her words.
Shifting their attention to the clown show in front of him, Shye smirked annoyingly.
“Hahaha, Dante, was it? The hell is this small shitshow cohort of yours? Are you sure this isn’t your first assassination? Have you guys even killed a person before?” He insulted, leaving Dante gnashing his teeth in anger.
It was indeed embarrassing. However, what could he do? He couldn’t control other familiars.
“Well, if you don’t attack, then we will! Nookie! Zeth!”
“Yes, master!”
‘Gladly, master.’
Soon after, Zeth charged toward a large group of adamantites and their familiars, her blazing hooves leaving a trail of fire behind her.
“Damn it! Arne! I can’t release you right now! Look! That familiar spirit is already charging at us! Get ready! If there’s an opportunity, I’ll send you back to your world!” Emmanuel shouted in a panic.
Instinctively, Arne, his Fire Fox, realized this wasn’t the time to argue with his master.
He turned his attention to the galloping duchess instead.
The other familiars reacted similarly, forming a temporary, cohesive unit that dissolved almost as quickly as it was created, even before Zeth arrived.
Why? Well, Zeth can communicate telepathically with creatures from her world, thus allowing her to strike a deal with them as she galloped.
‘Anyone who doesn’t want to die, step aside. I, the Duchess of the Dusk, promise not to harm those who back down. But for those who stand against me, I will show no mercy.’
Naturally, after hearing Zeth’s words, the familiars anxiously dashed to the side, clearing a path for her to slaughter their masters.
Arne was among those who stepped aside, feeling a bit guilty, but not overly so.
His master clearly wanted him to fight Zeth, even though it meant certain death.
As a result, Arne’s affection for his master had greatly diminished, and now he found himself indifferent to whether he lived or died.
It appeared that his master was a truly rotten person, but he hadn’t seen it before because he was treated well when things were going smoothly.
Their bond was short-lived—a fleeting connection he had foolishly believed was beautiful and enduring.
“ARNE! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! YOU TREACHEROUS FAMILIAR! WATCH HOW I DEAL WITH YOU LATER!!” Emmanuel exclaimed, utterly enraged at his familiar’s actions.
Unfortunately, Zeth was upon him, so there was no time for him to punish Arne. It would have to wait until he survived the ferocious mare’s onslaught.
Of course, Dante wouldn’t allow a huge part of his cohort to be decimated by the familiar spirit they initially prepared for, thus barking orders on how to deal with the situation.

“Shielders, move to the front and use your strongest defensive skills! Priests and priestesses cast your barriers! Scouts, surround the familiar spirit and make sure it doesn’t escape!”
As a scout himself, Dante swiftly circled Zeth, planning to use some high-quality restriction items to prevent it from escaping once the shielders successfully managed to block its attack.
However, his plan fell apart immediately.
Even with their strongest defensive skills, the shielders couldn’t fully stop Zeth.
They were blasted away, suffering severe internal injuries as they rolled across the ground, their armor slowly being consumed by blue flames.
The only thing they accomplished was briefly slowing down Zeth’s [Flaming Charge], giving the backliners a split-second chance to blink out of the way, which only about four managed to capitalize on and escape, while the other four—two priests, a mage, and an archer—were instantly reduced to ashes.
To make matters worse, the necrollin began to move.
Two (S)-ranked corpses, ten (S-)-ranked corpses, and the (A)-ranked Ember Wyvern twitched eerily before charging, pouncing, and flying toward another group of adamantites.
‘Damn it! This crazy witch! Why is Shye Crowley so much stronger than she made him out to be?!’ Dante cursed inwardly, gritting his teeth in frustration as his mind raced to make sense of the situation.
Shortly after, he decided to ditch Zeth, dashing towards Shye to take him out.
It was a strategic move, as familiars would be forced to return to their world once their masters were dead.
Since he didn’t believe his group could defeat Zeth or the necrollin’s puppets before his own forces were overwhelmed, it was wiser to target Shye, whom he viewed as the weakest link among the three.
Naturally, Shye easily noticed Dante’s advance as he was shouting orders left and right while staring coldly at him.
He also recognized that, although the goon leader’s plan was hasty and might lead to some casualties, it would be sufficient to keep Zeth and Nookie occupied for about ten seconds.
This would give Dante a brief opportunity to face Shye in a one-on-one duel.
He fully believed that ten seconds was more than enough for him, the twenty-seventh-ranked adventurer in the entire Chellione Region, to defeat a budding rookie.
After all, how could an adventurer who had been professional for just over two years match someone who had been in the field for more than a decade?
Moreover, while he acknowledged that Shye was more talented, he still had considerable talents himself.
In his mind, it was simply impossible for Shye to catch up to his strength in such a short time.
“Hoh, another idiot thinking he could take me, Shye Crowley, down in mere seconds, huh? Fine, come! I’ll slap you with the harshest of realities!”
