Chapter 617: Hero’s Triumph
‘A powerful attack!’ Shye inwardly commended, pretending to be helpless and desperate again while secretly preparing to execute what could be one of the greatest turnarounds in the history of Adthiopia between a hero and a monster.
The radiant, fan-shaped glaive drew closer, its celestial hum resonating like a divine herald of holy power.
Soon, it reached the helpless Valenzian Hero, seemingly obliterating him into mere particles.
There was no sign of Shye breaking free from the restriction skill.
Thus, the Valenzians had no choice but to watch in horror as their first-ever hero, Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn, seemed to have been slain by the Anubis.
Meanwhile, the foreign onlookers observed with a touch of schadenfreude. What a laughable tragedy this would be!
The story would go like this: Shye Crowley overestimated his strength after becoming a hero and died after arrogantly refusing help from the WAA.
Valenzia would once more be the butt of jokes amongst all the regions, just as it had always been.
Unfortunately for those hoping for his downfall and fortunately for those who believed in him, before the divine light from the Anubis’ devastating strike faded, a dark silhouette suddenly surged toward the ascended monster, who appeared to be growing complacent.
The Anubis was convinced that the young adventurer—hero or whatever—had been thoroughly caught in one of its lethal combinations and was surely dead.
As a result, it slightly lowered its guard, creating a perfect opportunity for Shye—now clad in pitch-black armor with dark wings—to strike.
His sudden counterattack was swift as a swallow and fierce as a raging thunder.
Before the Anubis even realized, Shye was already in front of it, the edges of his greatswords glowing an eerie red, whispers of death crawling their way to the ascended monster’s skin.
It still could not understand how Shye survived its attack.
However, it did not have the luxury to find out, at least not at the current moment as it has to find a way to survive the ferocious human’s strike first.
Using its sharp survival instincts, the Anubis quickly determined the best course of action, raising its glaive in a diagonal defensive position to block the incoming greatswords.
A chill ran down its spine at the sight of the edges of Shye’s weapons, but it was confident that its defensive skill, which increased its weapon’s durability a thousandfold, would be enough to block the human’s sinister strike.
Although it wasn’t certain if its weapon would break, it was at least sure that the residual force of the human’s attack wouldn’t be enough to kill it.
This was the only feasible plan it could think of at that moment: sacrificing its beloved fan-shaped glaive in exchange for its life and a chance to finish off the young human.
Unfortunately for the Anubis, Shye naturally had plans of his own. He would never let his ultimate skill, [Nightfall Reaper], go to waste.
Every time it struck, it reaped the lives of its targets or, at the very least, most of their vitality, leaving his enemies teetering on the gray line between life and death; and Shye intended to keep it that way.
…The clash seemed inevitable—tough glaive shaft versus dual greatswords.
However, just before the weapons made contact, a dark purple aura covered Shye’s dual greatswords, allowing them to simply pass through the toughened glaive shaft as though they were ethereal.
This naturally caused the eyes of the onlookers and even the Anubis itself to widen in utter shock
It was too late for the ascended monster to dodge.
However, it remembered that since the swords passed through its weapon, then it might not deal damage at all.
Everything might be a mere bluff!
Hence, believing that it figured out Shye’s plan, the calm and collected monster immediately changed to an offensive stance slashing its glaive towards Shye’s neck.
If everything went according to its calculations, it would merely suffer debuffs while the human would lose its head.
Unfortunately for it, Shye could control the activation and the deactivation of [Blades Of Despair].

Thus, just before the greatswords reached the Anubis, Shye deactivated his skill, reverting Adamance and Mithra to their original forms, their eerie red edges whispering death to the ascended monster.
The monster did its best to land its attack first.
However, this was futile, as Shye struck well before the monster could even form its plan.
As a result, its glaive came to a sudden halt just a few centimeters from Shye’s neck, its fate uncertain for a brief moment.
The viewers waited with bated breaths and mouths agape.
In the next moment, they finally saw what they had been waiting for: royal blue blood gushing out from the Anubis’s wound as its body was split diagonally in two.
It had been slain with a single strike.
The reaper of nightfall had claimed another life, and Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn stood victorious, proud as a lion.
Naturally, upon witnessing the glorious triumph of their hero, the Valenzians erupted into cheers, Shye’s guildmates in utter disbelief.
Shye Crowley had only been with them for quite a short time, and although it was a widely known fact that he cleared (S-) and (S) ranked quests before, they didn’t see how he did it.
Hence, they believed that it was merely through the help of his renowned king-class familiar that he could defeat (S-) and (S) ranked creatures.
Basically, they thought that the familiar was boosting Shye’s career, and without it, Shye Crowley wouldn’t be as strong as the rumors said he was.
After all, rumors had always been exaggerated.
This was why their minds were utterly blown after witnessing his skill firsthand.
The arrogant adamantites of his guild felt cold sweat pouring down their backs in buckets.
They had more or less acted coldly towards Shye, believing that although he was talented, he should know his place for a few years before interacting with them.
Now, they found out how stupid they were for treating him that way.
Only a select few of them, the most seasoned and skilled of the bunch, could claim to fight an Anubis head-on and live.
However, none of them dare claim they could kill it alone. They would at least need two comrades or more.
As a result, most of them vowed never to cross him again, while some of the more thick-skinned ones even began plotting how to get him to join their party for at least a few quests.
Meanwhile, the hero in question was merely happy to earn 15 points in all attributes, a rare skill coupon, and…
[Congratulations! You’ve earned 1,510,190 points!]
