Chapter 689: The 467th Match
Hearing his name come out of the wicked old man’s mouth, Shye’s heart skipped a beat.
[Your Unfazed Heart Trait has activated!]
Fortunately, he quickly regained control of his emotions, thanks to his reliable trait, enabling him to respond to Dweezel in a tone that was neither too nervous nor overly enthusiastic.
“Yes, I am indeed Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn, Valenzia’s first hero. I’m deeply honored that you’ve heard of my humble name, Lord Dweezel,” Shye replied, offering a deep bow to the retired hero while smiling as if he were truly proud to have his name mentioned by Dweezel.
Inwardly, however, he was unleashing rude remarks that would have tarnished his reputation if anyone had overheard them.
‘Heh, of course you know me. After all, I’m one of your targets, you damned evil old coot.’
“Hahaha, of course! I’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard of you by now,” Dweezel chuckled, returning Shye’s bow before continuing. “You know these old bones of mine can’t hold up the skies anymore. The future is in your hands, young one.”
Noticing Shye nodding decisively, Dweezel smiled and turned his attention back to the crowd.
“Well then, I’ve said all I needed to. How about we get back to the festivities?”
Once the unexpected brief conversation between Shye and Dweezel was done, Moderator Scarlet masterfully took the reins once more.
“S-Since Lord Hale has allowed this special match between two Valenzians to happen, we shall proceed with it. Sir Harry, Sir David, you two may step inside the arena.”
Upon hearing Scarlet’s words, the two immediately made their way to the weapon rack to grab their pre-configured elemental staffs, then proceeded to the center of the sparring area, cracking their knuckles as though the battle between them would be physical.
“Heh, you little brat from the Houdini Clan, look how far we’ve come! But I won’t be satisfied until I get it through that thick skull of yours that we from the Copperfield Clan are the superior mages!”
“Hahaha! Keep running your mouth, fool. Do you know why I challenged you today? Because I’ve got a new trump card you don’t even know about!”
“Hah! You think you’re the only one with a new secret ace? I’ll crush you and that pathetic trump card of yours!”
Watching the two bicker as though they were mortal enemies, Belford looked at Shye, demanding an explanation.
Naturally, Shye explained the history between the two—how they had been childhood friends and rivals from two lesser-known adventurer clans in Colzen City—and that this kind of behavior was just everyday routine for them.
Upon learning this, the old director finally breathed a sigh of relief.
After all, if Harry and David had truly despised each other, they would have become mere entertainment for the other regions.
It was at least reassuring to know that they wouldn’t be out to kill each other.
“S-Since both representatives are ready… Harry Copperfield of Valenzia versus David Houdini, also from Valenzia… Begin!”
The moment the signal to begin was given, Harry and David swiftly distanced themselves from each other, raising their elemental staffs and chanting incomprehensible phrases—sounds humans could pronounce, though their meanings remained unknown.
Shortly after, the vibrant glow of various colors radiated from their bodies, signaling that the buff spells they had cast were beginning to take effect.
Naturally, each class had a distinct approach when battling adventurers of different classes.
This is why Harry and David, aware that they were both mages, chose to enhance their abilities first; they knew there wouldn’t be any immediate attacks from their opponents, unlike when facing scouts, warriors, or archers.
Unfortunately, there were bound to be a few idiots among the spectators.
Three scouts and five warriors sneered in disdain at Harry and David’s initial choice of skills, convinced that they could have easily defeated the two mages if they had been the opponents.
The fools’ brains couldn’t even understand that Harry and David would be using different tactics against them.
Soon after, two astonishingly large fireballs soared across the sparring area, colliding in the center and erupting into a breathtaking yet terrifying display of flames and smoke.
The explosion illuminated the surroundings, casting flickering shadows on the spectators and leaving them awestruck by the sheer force of the mages’ power.

None of them wanted a piece of that.
Even the faces of the prominent young mages from Yon Augenn and Deltra turned serious upon witnessing Harry and David’s fireballs.
While their fireballs could match those of the two Valenzians, they couldn’t be sure they would prevail, which was far from what they had initially anticipated.
After all, they hailed from higher-ranked regions with abundant resources, while the Valenzians were supposed to be nothing more than poor backwater rats.
Even the other directors couldn’t fathom how these Valenzian youngsters grew so strong with so few resources.
As a result, they considered sending adventurers to the region to investigate, suspecting that Valenzia might be masquerading themselves as pigs to slaughter the tigers.
…The mayhem on the stage didn’t end with the two horrifying fireballs.
Armed with casting time improvement buffs, elemental projectiles materialized before Harry and David, hurtling toward each other with fierce determination.
Winds howled, ice splintered, rock shards flew in every direction, and devastating beams of light and darkness painted the arena in stark contrasts, bright as the sun one moment and dark as a frigid winter night the next.
It was truly a mystery how the two mages’ skills could be so devastating despite using tweaked elemental staffs that would weaken the spells to a certain extent, especially after they passed through the runic borders of the sparring area.
For a full ten minutes, the two battled fiercely, responding almost instantly to each spell their opponent launched, showcasing the deep understanding they had of each other’s abilities.
What began as a circus act had transformed into an intense showdown between two determined young mages, even bringing a curious smile to Dweezel’s face as he contemplated whether it would be worth recruiting them to his ranks.
