Chapter 738: The General’s Resentment
The Minotaur staggered forward after vomiting another mouthful of blood.
To make things worse for the monster, the Doppelganger also used its [Ninth Devastation Ray], piercing another part of its body and making it vomit more blood.
At that moment, it seemed as though the Minotaur would collapse any moment.
Hence, Shye quickly tried casting [Tame] on it once more.
However, just like earlier, nothing happened.
“Hahaha…” the monster laughed weakly. “You think I’m not aware of what you’re trying to do since earlier, human? With all that confidence in your taming skills, I’d wager you’ve subdued plenty of powerful monsters.”
Hearing the monster’s words, Shye’s eyes narrowed.
“However, you’re destined to fail today, as I’ve long sworn eternal loyalty to my lord, the Black Dragon of Destruction. Your puny tricks in hopes of enslaving me would never work!”
The human was highly skilled, and the Minotaur realized it had no chance of victory after squandering multiple opportunities by attempting to toy with such a formidable opponent.
It didn’t blame itself too much, though, as it had long respected the cunning nature of the humans.
It was just unlucky to face a strong and smart one today.
On the other hand, Shye’s heart wavered as an idea suddenly popped up in his mind.
It seemed that it would be impossible to tame the strong creature.
However, since his goal was to unseal the Minoan creature’s lord, perhaps he could find a way to secure its aid.
Such a powerful and resilient ally was exactly what the organization needed.
He even suspected that Sanada might be searching for the Black Dragon’s generals, hoping to add them to his ranks.
“Minotaur, join me. I plan to unseal the Black Dragon of Destruction!” He said bluntly, knowing that the Minoan creature despises trickery.
Only, he hadn’t expected that, instead of curiosity, his words would be met with hysterical anger.
“YOU FILTHY HUMAN!! KEEP MY LORD’S NAME OUT OF YOUR DAMN MOUTH!!” The Minoan Warlord roared, mustering what little strength it had to move, charging towards Shye once more in a final attempt to kill him.
Moments later, the Minotaur spewed blood again as its red aura erupted and became even denser, seemingly enhancing the monster’s attributes significantly for a limited time at the cost of its twelve-stack bonus.
Shye naturally recognized that it would be unwise to face the monster head-on.
Hence, he readied his repositioning skills, intending to use them at the last moment to evade the devastating final blow.
Shye wasn’t particularly concerned about the attack, as he had lots of ways to protect himself.
However, he soon realized how mistaken he was when the Minotaur unleashed a skill that locked down the space around him, preventing any chance to blink or dash away.
“DIE!!” the Minoan Warlord bellowed, swinging its black, flaming halberd downward, shrouded in a dark and terrifying aura.
Mighty as the attack was, Shye knew that it was the Minotaur’s last strike.
There was nothing for him to worry about.
‘Barrier of the Condemned!’ Shye inwardly exclaimed, activating his Impious Origin Belt’s trusty defensive skill.
*BANG!*
A loud thud echoed as the Minoan Warlord’s strike collided with the barrier, generating black sparks that made Shye’s heart race.

Until now, no creature had ever triggered such a reaction from the Barrier of the Condemned, leading him to believe it was indestructible and could absorb any hit, no matter the power behind it.
The next moment, as if proving the grim theories in his mind, a slight crack appeared at the area of the barrier the halberd struck.
‘Sh*t!’ Shye cursed inwardly, checking how many of his [Boost] charges had recovered.
Unfortunately for him, only one charge remained, forcing his mind into overdrive as he scrambled to find a solution with the limited time he had.
Soon, the [Barrier of the Condemned] shattered.
Nonetheless, it managed to weaken the Minotaur’s final blow, giving Shye the option of facing it head-on, though it was extremely risky as his human body might not be able to handle the residual force.
‘Think!’
Luckily, just before the halberd struck him, Shye caught a glimpse of his Ravenous Doppelganger.
An idea then popped up in his mind.
‘Swap!’
He activated the Doppelganger’s subskill, allowing him to switch places with it.
In the next instant, he used its other subskill, [Dark Merge], absorbing the Doppelganger to protect it from being destroyed.
His decision turned out to be correct.
When the halberd struck the ground, the residual force split it in two, leaving a massive crater in the underground room.
Had Shye dared to face the blow, he would have been severely wounded, even with [Stoic Lv.5] activated to help him withstand it.
“H…How?” were the words of the Minotaur before it collapsed face first, struggling to breathe.
Shye walked in front of it and kneeled on one knee.
“You are a mighty and loyal general, Minotaur,” he remarked, prompting the Minoan creature to summon its last bit of strength to meet his gaze.
At first, it thought the human was mocking it after his victory.
However, to its surprise, the young hero’s eyes held nothing but sincerity.
This caused the heart of the monster to waver. It didn’t seem like the human was scheming something this time.
“General of the Black Dragon, we are truly trying to free your master. Join us.” Shye said.
“W-Why…should I trust you…human? Aren’t you humans the ones who sealed my lord?…Why would you now do the opposite?” the Minotaur questioned with a resentful gaze, likely roaring its words if it had the strength.
“The heroes who sealed your lord discovered that one among them was the true culprit—the one who provoked the Black Dragon of Destruction to attack the city, all in a twisted pursuit of immortality,” Shye explained, eliciting a faint sneer from the Minoan Warlord.
“Heh…I already knew from the start that something was wrong with my lord that day…and that it was probably your cursed race that did it…I was correct all along! It was refreshing to kill so many of your kind that day…I regret nothing…Immortality? Ha…Hahaha! Delusional!…Not even my lord, a deity, can be immortal…”
Naturally, Shye wasn’t about to miss this chance to recruit the Minotaur, so he allowed it to vent its frustrations, not denying that everything was caused by his race.
“I apologize for the folly of my kind,” he said to the Minoan creature, offering a deep, respectful bow. “We recently learned that your lord’s divinity maintained balance in the world, so a few of us are on a mission to restore that order—though many see our actions as evil.”
“Hmph…And you expect me to believe you?…Dog of the WAA?” the Minotaur sneered in disgust.
“The WAA knows little of the truth, so please don’t hold it against them. They’re simply trying to protect our kind.” Shye explained, pausing for a moment before continuing: “The true culprit is the hero who sealed your lord, Dweezel Hawkins—he is the real enemy. Additionally, I’m an undercover agent for my organization, posing as a regional hero of the WAA while we build our strength for one final strike. Gaining your support and that of the other generals would significantly bolster our efforts. So, loyal general, what do you say? Will you lend us your aid?”
