Chapter 743: Three Heroes Destined Astray
“Oh? So she became a hero candidate as well and received special missions, too?” Shye mused with intrigue as she looked at Frozen End, who was standing on the stage with her signature ice-cold yet stoic expression.
If there were three persons who he thought were best suited for the position of hero, Shye would immediately answer Wendy, Frozen End, and Luna.
Wendy embodied purity, Frozen End represented a strong sense of duty, and Luna was the essence of unmatched compassion and leadership.
Unfortunately, while the first two made it to the podium, the last one was nowhere near talented enough.
It was a pity.
Still, having two out of three—one of them being Shye Crowley 2.0—was something worth celebrating for Valenzians, at least for a few months to years.
After all, three of the four heroes were fated to be cast as villains in the manipulated eyes of the masses.

One month ago…
“Shirley? Oh, and why is big sister Seira here too?” Wendy asked Shye, tilting her head adorably. “Are they, perhaps, part of what you wanted to discuss with me privately?”
Shye pondered whether to invite Kiin to help recruit Wendy.
However, in the end, he decided against it, believing that it would be for the best if he only invited the ones he trusted the most.
“Yes, Wendy,” Shye said in a serious tone, giving the young priestess subtle hints that the topic they would be talking about today wasn’t something trivial.
“I’ll be straightforward with you. We’ve joined Hadean Varsa, a group labeled as terrorists but dedicated to saving the world from ruin, and we want you to join us. I don’t know exactly when, but a massive war is likely to break out in a few months or years. I don’t want you—my close friends—standing on the opposite side of the battlefield, so I’m doing everything I can to bring everyone in. Shirley, Kiin, and Seira have already agreed to join.”
Hearing Shye’s words, Wendy’s heart raced, and confusion consumed her for a few moments.
Fortunately, she had already learned that taking a deep breath and keeping a clear mind would always help her view things objectively.
So, she allowed herself all the time needed to gather her thoughts, taking as many deep breaths as necessary.
Watching this, Shye felt impressed; Wendy might have been a bit naive, but she was undoubtedly very smart.
“Archpriest Deo always taught me that terrorists were evil people and that I should never let myself fall into their wicked hands—let alone join them,” the young priestess replied, doing her best to steady her trembling hands. “But I’ve learned that things aren’t always as they seem. And since I trust you all, I’ll give you the chance to explain further.”
This time, it was Shye who took a deep breath in response to Wendy’s reply.
He felt closer to her than to Harry and David, having shared more life-and-death experiences together, so hearing her at least give him a chance to explain brought him a sense of relief.
“Thank you for understanding, Wendy,” Shye replied gratefully. “Well then, I shall begin with the mana dungeon problem.”
His reply prompted Wendy to narrow her eyes in contemplation.
She was much smarter than Seira and Shirley, allowing her to piece together several clues from the initial sentences of Shye’s explanation.
From what she understood, the source of the increasing mana dungeon spawn rates was the enemy of Hadean Varsa, a foe who was posing as a righteous individual.
“Please watch this recording,” Shye said, pulling a recording crystal from the system’s inventory and infusing it with his mana to play the footage.
This recording was the one wherein a wisp of the Black Dragon of Destruction’s divinity and the White Dragon of Creation’s divinity stopped a mana dungeon from forming.
Familiar with divinities more than anyone in the group, Wendy asked:
“So those two divinities control the spawn rates of mana dungeons, did I understand correctly?”
“Yes, that’s correct,” Shye confirmed.

“Then may I ask whose divinities are those?” Wendy followed up.
The belief in gods and goddesses in this world stems from the fact that a wisp of their divinity can sometimes be found, granting a permanent minor blessing from the deity if absorbed by an adventurer.
The more divinities an adventurer absorbed, the more permanent blessings they would receive.
They could also increase the rank of a blessing from minor to major should they stumble upon another divinity of the same god or goddess.
In addition to this, the divinities were used to create permanent blessing scrolls.
This was the reason why a permanent greater blessing was incredibly expensive, as only highly skilled priests and priestesses could track and store these divinities, often requiring the assistance of combat-type adventurers to serve as their bodyguards during the search.
“The white one is the divinity of the White Dragon of Creation, while the black one is the divinity of the Black Dragon of Destruction,” Shye answered, confident that Wendy would be able to connect the dots herself.
Sure enough, a few moments later, she gasped in understanding.
“T-Then sealing the Black Dragon of Destruction was a b-big mistake, no?” Wendy replied, extremely concerned.
“That’s correct,” Shye affirmed. “And that’s why Hadean Varsa’s leader, the former Voidweaver Sanada Eiichiro, is striving to correct the mistakes he and the Yon Augenn party made in the past. Unfortunately, he discovered that Dweezel Hawkins orchestrated the attack by the Black Dragon of Destruction, manipulating the deity into striking Yon Augenn City with the intention of sealing it. Hawkins also succeeded in preventing Sanada from revealing the truth earlier, leading to Sanada being branded as a traitor and a terrorist.”
“I see. However, why would he want to seal it?” Wendy asked, her heart racing and extremely conflicted.
“Because he’s seeking immortality, and the Black Dragon of Destruction is the key to achieving it,” Shye explained, this time, with confidence, as he now had proof.
“I-If that’s true, then please show me some evidence, Shye…”
