Chapter 749: A Showoff Like Its Master
After completing their mission and capturing a brief recording of the drakes’ corpses, Shye and Shirley descended the mountain.
Then, once at the base, they mounted Zeth, and the three of them headed toward the Varca Death Zone to meet Nookie.
The zone wasn’t far from the rocky mountain.
With Zeth’s incredible speed, the trio arrived at the zone’s empty lobby after just an hour.
Strong and terrifying as their lineup was, Shye still performed the usual inventory checks before entering, learning from his past experiences that he shouldn’t be overconfident, as doing so could create an opportunity for his downfall.
After all, anything could happen inside a death zone.
A few minutes later, the three entered, heading straight towards Nookie’s training area.
However, as usual, the imp and its army weren’t there.
“Shall we eat while we wait for Nookie?” Shye suggested.
“Yes, please. I’m starting to get a bit hungry,” Shirley responded, cutely rubbing her stomach.
‘An excellent idea, master. I am quite hungry as well,’ Zeth added in agreement.
And so, Shye began showcasing his excellent roasting skills.
He first took out huge chunks of (A) ranked boar meat from the system’s inventory.
The meat chunks appeared tender and juicy, with perfect marbling, making both Shirley and Zeth instinctively swallow.
The two could only imagine what it would taste like when roasted to perfection.
Seeing this, Shye smiled.
He proceeded to pull out premium herbs, seasonings, and sauces from the inventory, expertly applying just the right amount to the meat chunks and placing them temporarily on a large, clean blanket he used specifically for this purpose.
The next moment, he retrieved a few giant metal skewers, stabbing them deep into the chunks of meat.
Finally, he set up a large campfire and a makeshift spit, placing the boar meat over it to roast slowly.
In only a few minutes, the meat began emitting a mouth-watering aroma.
It was then that an impish voice suddenly sounded behind them.
“Oh, what are you cooking, master? Can I have some?” Nookie asked, emerging from the void.
Earlier, Shirley sensed a monster concealed within an approaching void pocket behind them.
However, when she saw that Shye didn’t seem particularly worried, she assumed that the creature in the void was probably the subordinate Shye had mentioned.
Hence, she allowed it to come closer, fully trusting her beloved.
Upon hearing Nookie’s voice, Shirley turned her head, looking at the scrawny imp with interest.
Unlike Shye, she didn’t possess the appraisal skill, nor was she someone who read extensively about monstrous creatures.
This was the first time she’d encountered such a frail-looking creature that could speak flawless human language.
“Ah, Nookie, there you are!” Shye said, turning to face the necrollin. “I missed you so much that I was on the verge of detonating your seal if you’d been a minute later!”
Although adept at speaking like a human, Nookie hadn’t had much interaction with Shye, so it didn’t know that Shye was only joking and was utterly horrified.

“M-M-Master! P-Please don’t do such a thing!” Nookie pleaded pitifully. “I-I was on the verge of adding another (S)-ranked serpent to my collection, so I apologize for being late.”
Seeing this, Shye chuckled. “I’m just joking, Nookie. It was only a joke.”
“A-A joke…that’s great…” the little imp breathed a sigh of relief.
“So, did you manage to add the serpent to your collection?” Shye followed up.
“Yes, master. Do you want to see Slinky?” Nookie asked excitedly, eager to show off its new corpse puppet.
Of course, Shye didn’t want to break the little necrollin’s heart, so he took this chance to introduce Shirley to Nookie.
“Hahaha, of course, I do!” he said with a laugh, bringing a wide grin to Nookie’s villainous face. “But first, let me introduce you to her. This is Shirley Locke, my beloved partner. From now on, you will follow her commands and treat them as if they were my own. Understood?”
“Understood, Master!” the scrawny necrollin replied while jumping up and down.
It couldn’t wait another second to show off to its master and its master’s human partner.
“Alright, Nookie, show us your impressive army!” Shye said with a confident grin, eager to see both the corpse puppet collection and Shirley’s reaction to it.
“Right away, master!” Nookie responded with the widest smile it had ever made in its life.
Performing hand seals, it slammed both palms into the ground, causing a tremor as dark purple magic circles appeared one after another, totaling around fifty.
“EDUARDO TENSEI!!” the little necrollin exclaimed, causing void containers to emerge from the magic circles.
Shirley’s eyes widened in sheer shock and disbelief as she gazed at the fifty horrifying corpses visible through the translucent purple covers of the void containers.
The weakest of the corpses, an (S-) ranked Orc General standing three meters tall, stepped out of its container, moving as if it were still alive.
This triggered a response from Shirley, prompting her to assume her battle stance unknowingly.
“Relax, Shirley, they’re all under Nookie’s control,” Shye said, prompting his partner to realize just how tense she had become after sensing the corpses’ auras, which were saturated with the stench of death.
“S-Shye…what kind of creature is Nookie?” she finally asked. “Is it a goblin?”
“Close, but not quite, Madam Shirley,” Nookie replied with a smile, not daring to disrespect Shirley in the slightest for being ill-informed of his species.
In truth, the small necrollin was pleased that its master’s partner was unaware of its race, especially since Nookie believed that they, the necrollins, were exceedingly rare, for they were dwellers of the void.
“We are necrollins, a species of exceptionally intelligent goblins who evolved to thrive in the boundless void after realizing that the world had no place for us,” the little necrollin declared proudly, raising its index finger to chin level and pointing it skyward. “Goblins, after all, were a weak and foolish race, and we refuse to be associated with such creatures. Thus, we adopted the name necrollins.”
“Most of us have the ability to control other beings to serve as our protectors since our bodies are much weaker compared to other monstrous creatures. In my case, I was once a necrollin puppeteer, capable of commanding a small number of corpses to fight on my behalf.”
“But thanks to Master Shye’s brilliance and benevolence, I have evolved into a necrollin master puppeteer. Although I haven’t held this title for long, I am now able to command fifty high-ranked corpses.”
Upon hearing Nookie’s explanation, Shirley was thoroughly impressed.
She believed that this little creature would probably be the core of Shye’s personal army in the future.
