Chapter 767: A Boyfriend
Shye approached and stared down at the so-called boyfriend, circling the poor guy as he inspected him from head to toe.
Leffen couldn’t help but swallow repeatedly, his heart racing in his chest.
After all, he was in the presence of the most talented youth in not just their region, but possibly the entire world.
To make matters worse, the guy was eyeing him like an overprotective mother hen.
Meanwhile, everyone inside the guild branch headquarters watched with intense interest, eager to see how Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn would confront the bold junior who had dared win the heart of his beloved little sister.
If Shirley had been there to witness Shye’s antics, she wouldn’t have been able to contain her laughter.
It turned out to be for the best that Shye had come alone.
At first, Maia thought it would be amusing to watch her big brother interrogate her boyfriend.
However, when she saw Shye’s stern expression as he scrutinized Leffen from head to toe, a wave of nervousness for her lover suddenly washed over her.
Maia realized just how much she respected her big brother, and the thought of him opposing their relationship unsettled her.
She wasn’t sure if she’d have the courage to go against his wishes.
Fortunately, the nerve-wracking circling came to an end after a few moments, and the unfriendly expression on Shye’s face faded—if only for the time being.
“Fine then, I’ll give you a chance, brat.” Shye began, “Follow me.”
Naturally, Maia and Leffen hurried after him as he made his way to the guild master’s office.
After exchanging greetings with Guild Master Corvus, Shye proceeded to the private guild office room he had requested from the guild master, the younger couple trailing closely behind.
A few minutes later, Shye, Maia, and Leffen sat across from one another, a tense silence settling over the room—one that felt particularly ominous for the young couple.
“On second thought, Maia, would you mind waiting outside for a while? I’d like to have a word with this ‘boyfriend’ of yours alone,” Shye requested firmly.
Naturally, Maia complied, leaving the room with a mix of nerves and hope for the best.
However, before she left, she gave Leffen a ‘you can do it’ look, further irritating the protective big brother.
Despite their parents’ foolish decision to abandon them while they were still young, Shye did his best to raise his little sister, shielding her from the harsh realities of the world and bearing the burden himself as much as he could.
When he had to beg on the streets for scraps or coins, he often made her stay in one place until they found a dilapidated hut, where he would have Maia wait while he searched for food to bring back.
He always prioritized her meals over his own, often leaving himself with only a small portion to eat for the first time late in the afternoon or early evening each day.
Still, Shye wouldn’t have had it any other way.
He loved Maia dearly.
After all, for a long time, he believed she was the only family he had left in the world.
Thus, he found it hard to entrust her to just any man. He needed to be certain that her future partner would care for her as deeply as he did.
…As the door creaked shut, Shye took a deep breath, steadying himself to set aside any prejudice or bias in his heart, determined to give Leffen a fair chance to prove himself worthy of his little sister’s hand.
“Now then, Leffen, correct?” He asked, unconsciously narrowing his eyes.
“Y-Yes, Sir Crowley of the Black Dawn.” the blonde-haired young man answered as calmly as possible, though he inevitably stuttered in nervousness.
“Place your blood here,” Shye instructed, pulling a high-grade orb of truth from the system’s inventory. “I apologize for all of this. I’m just concerned for my little sister.”

At the sight of the orb of truth, Leffen froze for a moment before quickly following Shye’s instructions, acting as though nothing had happened.
Shye noticed the brief, odd reaction but didn’t think much of it, assuming the young man was simply nervous.
Still, the subtle moment stuck around at the back of his mind.
“Leffen, how bout you tell me your origins? Who is your mother and father?”
Shye had developed a habit of asking this certain question to anyone he found suspicious.
Though the blonde-haired young man didn’t strike him as one such individual, he asked the question out of reflex, never expecting it to yield such remarkable results this time.
After being stupefied for a few moments, Leffen suddenly laughed.
“Hahaha! Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn, you truly live up to your reputation. Who else in the entire world would treat the interrogation of his little sister’s boyfriend with such intensity? An orb of truth, hahaha! Too bad you’re just a little too late.”
Naturally, Shye’s eyes narrowed, and a cold expression surfaced on his face at the younger man’s words.
‘Was this bastard pretending the whole time?’ he thought, glaring daggers at Leffen. ‘I guess it’s safe to assume his relationship with Maia was just an act too… This scumbag… I’ll make sure you pay for playing with my sister’s feelings.’
“So, will you answer my question or not?”
“Ooh, terrifying,” Leffen quipped with a mock shiver. “I’d love to play along, but the orb of truth would just turn red, so what’s the point? Don’t worry, though—I’ve truly fallen for your sister now, and I’ll care for her just as well as you would.”
“Hoh? As if I’d let the two of you be together.” Shye retorted with a cold smirk.
However, the blonde-haired pretender remained unfazed, his confident expression unwavering.
“Like I said, Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn. You arrived a bit too late. She won’t go with you even if you ask her to.” Leffen mocked.
“Hahahaha! You don’t know what I’m capable of, brat.” Shye laughed, standing the next moment and walking right next to the confident young man.
“What’s? Are you planning to kill me? Even you need a moral high ground to justify murder, no? What will you tell everyone? That I didn’t answer your question? Hahaha, laughable! Listen up—you have no idea who’s backing me, Valenzian Hero, and I strongly suggest you don’t dig too deep into things beyond your reach. Just keep playing the loyal dog for the WAA, and who knows, maybe they’ll throw you a bone.”
This time, the blonde young man outright threatened Shye, even daring to label him as the WAA’s dog.
“Hahaha! So it’s true what they say—newborn calves really aren’t afraid of tigers,” Shye chuckled, causing Leffen to narrow his eyes with a faint smirk of amusement.
The young man assumed Shye was just putting on a brave front, his heart likely pounding with nerves beneath the surface.
Unbeknownst to Leffen, his understanding barely scratched the surface when compared to Shye, who already had an inkling of who he was.
