Chapter 769: Surprise for Maia
Shye contacted his parents beforehand, telling them he would bring Maia to the headquarters.
Naturally, knowing they had little time before the organization began its operations, Alicia and Maverick Crowley didn’t stop Shye from bringing Maia along.
After all, they, too, missed their daughter.
While they feared that her reaction would be the same as Shye’s, they were done running away.
They would face her wrath with whatever courage they could summon in the brief time Shye had given them to prepare.
Despite his composed exterior, Shye’s heart was racing.
He had spent the last few years trying to forgive his parents, and he had made some progress along the way.
Though there was still resentment in his heart, he believed he was finally ready to forgive them.
After all, they were still his parents, and they had only acted in what they believed was the best interest of their children, though their decision turned out to be both foolish and rash.
Moreover, Alicia and Maverick had left them with the belief that they would be well cared for, only for the two to later discover that the scheming old man had taken extreme measures, forcing him and his little sister to starve in an effort to make them wiser than their years and force them to confront the harsh reality of the world at such a young age in preparation for what was to come.
Sanada’s measures might’ve been cruel and cold-hearted, but they were effective.
Still, Shye was unsure of how Maia would react upon finding out that their parents were alive, which made him anxious, especially since he hoped to repair their family before the war began.
A few more minutes later, the siblings arrived at a private and secure room that was only accessible to Hadean Varsa Commanders.
“Come, Maia, sit beside me. Let’s wait for the people I mentioned to arrive,” Shye urged, his serious tone making his little sister feel a bit uneasy.
She suddenly found herself in a private, metallic room within some eerie headquarters, with nothing but a meeting table and a few chairs inside.
Furthermore, the topic of her conversation with her big brother and a few other unknown individuals remained a secret as she waited.
Her unease was completely justified.
Nonetheless, she was at least sure that nothing bad would happen to her, trusting her big brother a great deal.
After around two minutes of awkward silence, two people entered the room, prompting Maia to turn her head and look.
The two individuals wore white masks, preventing her from recognizing them.
However, she noticed they were trembling, which only added to her confusion and anxiety.
Alicia and Maverick noticed her reaction, allowing them to realize that their faces were still hidden.
The next moment, they removed their masks, revealing their crying faces as Alicia rushed to hug her daughter
“My daughter… my dear daughter. Mommy is so sorry for everything… I love you, Maia…”
Maia was naturally frozen in utter confusion, her mind going blank as she stared at her father’s tear-streaked face before slowly turning her head to look at her mother.
“…Mom? Dad?” she asked in a dumbfounded manner, subconsciously turning to her big brother the next moment for guidance.
Shye nodded at her, reassuring her that she wasn’t dreaming and that her parents had truly been alive all this time.
The next moment, tears streamed down her cheeks, a myriad of emotions overwhelming her confused little heart.
Ultimately, her reflex prompted her to hug her mother tightly as she bawled her heart out.
“Uuuu… Mom! I missed you so much! I never thought I’d see you again! And you too… Dad… You’re alive… you’re both alive!” she cried, as Maverick joined in, turning it into a group hug.

Shye found it difficult to hug his parents.
Unlike Maia, whose heart remained pure and untainted and who hadn’t suffered as much during their childhood, he had borne the weight of everything at a young age, which had caused some resentment toward them.
Nevertheless, he was starting to find it within himself to forgive them.
Still, it was too difficult for him to embrace them, so instead, he quietly watched the three of them, a subtle smile on his face.
“H-How? You’re both alive all this time? Why didn’t you two return to see us? Uuuu…”
Maia asked question after question while crying.
However, Alicia and Maverick chose not to explain anything just yet, deciding it would be best to do so with the help of Shye.
After about five minutes of letting their emotions flow, Maia and her parents finally managed to compose themselves.
Shye then urged everyone to take their seats so they could begin discussing the truth.
“M-Mom, Dad… I’m so happy you’re both still alive. But you’ve been avoiding my questions since earlier… Could you at least explain why you didn’t come back all these years? And have you already met with Big Brother? Big brother, how long have you known?” Maia asked, desperate to know the answers.
She understood that she had been too young and naive before, which might have been why her big brother kept things from her.
This was also why she wasn’t angry.
She was well aware of her own limitations at the time.
However, now that she was a fully grown adult, she believed she had the right to know what was truly going on.
Shye, Alicia, and Maverick looked at each other briefly before nodding, shifting their attention back to Maia the next moment.
“Maia,” Shye called out. “I’ll begin with a grim revelation. The world is headed for ruin, and Hadean Varsa, although widely known as a notorious terrorist group, is working hard to save it.”
Maia gulped and nodded upon hearing Shye’s explanation, not doubting her big brother in the slightest.
It was then that Maverick chimed in.
“Your mom and I joined this terrorist organization in the hope of securing a better future for you and your big brother. However, we deeply regret our foolishness in trusting the organization’s promises, which we later discovered they didn’t keep. Please, Maia, forgive us for our reckless and shortsighted decisions…”
The couple trembled, bracing themselves for a barrage of hateful words from their beloved daughter.
To their surprise, however, nothing of the sort happened. Instead, Maia simply rose from her seat, walked over to her mother and father, and embraced them.
