Chapter 773: The Operation’s Leader
With the less-trodden dirt path he was on illuminated by the subtle silver moonlight, Shye headed toward his urgent quest’s location
However, he remained vigilant and silent, focusing his senses on his surroundings.
The mission assigned to him was rather simple and common yet urgent.
One of the WAA’s observation crystals located at the western borders was knocked over by a monstrous creature passing by.
His job was to put the spherical observation crystal back to its original location, and if it was destroyed, replace it with the one given to him.
He was also tasked with eliminating any monstrous creatures daring to approach the warning fences of the WAA, to discourage others from entering the area over the next few months.
The only challenge of the mission was that he needed to walk to the location of the observation crystal, which was about a three-day journey on foot for humans.
While this wasn’t much of an issue for him, thanks to Zeth, Shye decided to walk the distance himself to ensure his familiar’s safety.
After all, he wasn’t certain whether Dweezel’s men would attack during the journey there or on the way back.
It was better for him to take his time and play it safe.
A few more minutes later, he decided to set up camp beside the dirt road, setting up traps and keeping his [Mana Pulse] skill active as he roasted a generous piece of ox meat.
After eating, he fell asleep.
Everything went smoothly on his first and second days.
However, on the third day, he was attacked by a wandering Poison Drake, which he swiftly dealt with.
Then, just before nighttime…
“Hoh, so this is the observation facility, huh?” Shye muttered as his gaze drifted across what appeared to be a barren wasteland.
Stretching as far as the eye could see were only uneven, rocky terrain and scattered rocks of various sizes—some as huge as ogres.
The only notable feature in the area was a thirty-meter-tall metal tower with a crystal holder on top, enclosed within specialized wooden fences that radiated a strange bloodthirsty aura.
“That must be the observation tower…” He continued. “As for the crystal…ah…”
Shye stared at the broken crystal at the foot of the tower.
‘Well, they didn’t tell me I have to clean that up so…hehe…’
With a single powerful leap, he landed on a metal bar near the top of the tower, then climbed the rest of the way with the replacement crystal in hand.
He was eager to finish the task quickly.
After all, there was a slight chance that this was just a regular urgent mission, with no ambush waiting for him.
If that were the case, he didn’t want to risk unnecessary danger by lingering outside of Valenzia City longer than necessary.
Unfortunately, that hope was quickly crushed when his [Mana Pulse] detected a large group of humans emerging from spatial pockets one after another, all wearing black attire with the insignia of the infamous terrorist group, Sinister.
Normally, Shye’s skill would’ve detected even those hiding in spatial pockets, so it was rather unexpected for him that his trusty detection skill had failed.
Understanding that terrorist groups had all sorts of tools to facilitate ambushes, Shye didn’t blame his [Mana Pulse] too much.
He was prepared for an attack anyway.
He was more surprised by the fact that Dweezel was willing to collaborate with terrorist groups to handle the dirty work, as he knew the old snake was a meticulous individual who would never allow his operations to be even the slightest bit at risk of failure.

Naturally, one would trust their own subordinates more than those of others, so Shye found it odd that Sinister was the group to attack him.
However, there was no doubt in his mind that they had been sent by Dweezel.
Shye remained calm, placing the observation crystal in its designated spot before looking down at the terrorists with the air of a mighty god.
“Are you all stupid? Why attack me at an observation facility? The WAA will know about this immediately and send reinforcements,” he asked mockingly, crossing his arms over his chest.
He was truly amused at the timing of their ambush, though he couldn’t deny that he would never have expected it.
‘Hoh, or maybe they’re the ones responsible for knocking down the observation crystal?’ Shye pondered.
The next moment, a raspy, old laugh echoed from behind the crowd of more than 150 assassins as an old man, his face concealed by a hood, was escorted to the front of the encirclement by two others.
“Hahaha, don’t worry. The observation crystal has been modified to show the WAA what I want them to see,” the man said, removing his hood to reveal his face. “It’s good to see you again, young hero.”
Shye’s eyes widened upon seeing who the leader of the assassins was.
However, he was only surprised. He wasn’t scared at all.
The next instant, Shye’s calm demeanor returned.
“Hoh? What an honor, Dweezel Hawkins of the Golden Sun. Who would have thought that you, of all people, would personally come to fetch me?” he said coldly, locking eyes with the old snake.
“Hahaha,” Dweezel chuckled once more. “It seems my decision to personally lead the abduction force was the right one, given that you already knew I was after you. I’m curious—how did you figure it out?”
Naturally, Shye couldn’t reveal that it was Hadean Varsa who first discovered a mole among his friends.
“Heh, maybe if you’d trained your little hawkling to act more convincingly, I wouldn’t have caught on,” he replied with a smirk.
“Hah… so that’s it. I suppose that’s the only plausible explanation. After all, you’d never associate yourself with a terrorist organization, would you?” the old snake replied, causing Shye’s heart to race slightly faster.
‘Tch, has this old bastard known all along that I’m part of Hadean Varsa?’

Luckily, he had long trained himself to not show any reactions, especially to his enemies.
Hence, Dweezel, who was only probing if his suspicions were correct, did not manage to discern anything from him.
“Huh? And why on earth would I join an organization like that? So they can extract my talent just like you’re planning to?” Shye retorted.
“Hahahaha,” the old snake laughed, unable to hide his admiration for the young man before him. “You are truly sharp, Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn. Your abilities surpass even your reputation. Since you already know what I want from you, there’s no need to waste time explaining.”
The next moment, Dweezel’s eyes narrowed, and a sinister smile spread across his face. “Begin the operation.”
