Chapter 780: Cruel Fate
“Wendy Primrose? The young priestess, correct?” Sanada turned around and asked with narrowed eyes, making Shirley’s heart skip a beat.
“Yes,” Shye responded with a grim and slightly furious look.
The old man went silent for a few seconds, seemingly pondering the reason as to why Dweezel would do such a thing.
As time went by, the expression on Sanada’s face darkened more and more, causing Shye and Shirley’s hearts to race faster and faster.
Wendy was one of their closest friends. They couldn’t allow the old bastard to harm her.
“Old man, do you have any idea why that old snake targeted my friend?” He followed up anxiously.
“I do,” Sanada responded. “However…knowing that bastard, he might’ve already performed the experiment, provided that he had already prepared what he needed.”
“Quit speaking in riddles, old man! Just tell us—what’s that bastard planning?!”
Shye was already on edge, and the bald Sanada’s constant stalling only worsened his unease.
The old man naturally felt a bit embarrassed.
He realized he had unconsciously slipped into his habit of speaking cryptically.
But after years of talking this way, how could he help it?
Clearing his throat, Sanada spilled what was on his mind:
“You remember the one who gave me the undeniable proof of Dweezel’s pursuit of immortality, correct?”
“Yes, Aeryth Whitemane. But didn’t she die long ago?”
“Indeed. However, I suspect that Dweezel collected her soul, and that…he plans to use Wendy Primrose as a vessel for that soul.”
Upon hearing Sanada’s words, Shye and Shirley’s eyes widened.
The bastard was indeed planning to use their friend as a lab rat!
Although they didn’t want to accept such a cruel fate awaited their friend, the explanation made too much sense, especially after seeing how captivated Dweezel had been by Aeryth in the recording, even daring to spill his deepest, darkest secrets to her.
The two youngsters clenched their teeth in frustration and anger, but knowing they were powerless for now, they could only look to the old man for guidance.
“Old man, do you know where the bastard could’ve taken her?” Shye asked, prompting the old man to frown and answer coldly:
“So what if I know? Do you think I don’t know what you’re planning? Don’t forget, you’re the organization’s ace. You can’t throw your life away.”
Shye was about to rage at the old man due to his overly anxious heart.
Fortunately…
[Your [Unfazed Heart] trait has activated!]
With a deep breath, Shye was able to recollect himself.
Facing the old man, he spoke in a slightly cold tone: “So, what do you propose we do? You know I can’t stand by and let that old snake hurt her. I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t at least try to save my friend.”
Sanada couldn’t reply for a few seconds.
The old man knew that with Shye’s stubborn and compassionate nature, the young man would indeed not be at ease if he didn’t even attempt to save his friend.
“I’ll be honest, lad.” Sanada began, “Your friend might already have been experimented on, and I’m not sure if we can bring her true self back even if we manage to rescue her.”

The young couple’s heart dropped after hearing the old man’s honest words.
However, what else could they do except try?
“Fine, difficult as it would be, I’ll choose to believe and accept that,” Shye replied through clenched teeth. “But still, tell me—how can we save her? If you’re unwilling to take the risk, at least give me the location of the main headquarters. I’ll handle it with my personal unit.”
“Kid, don’t be reckless. Dweezel Hawkins isn’t someone you can take down easily—if he were, I’d have killed him long ago. But don’t worry, Wendy Primrose’s body will likely remain unharmed. It’s her soul that concerns me. Even so, you can’t act impulsively.”
Just when Shye was about to have an outburst of anger again, Sanada continued:
“Three months from now, the organization will launch its first probing attack. Use that as a diversion to infiltrate the location I’ll provide a day before the operation. I won’t give it to you now to avoid the risk of you charging in like a fool. Remember, you’re not invincible. No one is—not even deities have escaped that old snake’s grasp.”
“This is the only solution I can offer, and I’m confident it’s your best chance to save your friend. In the meantime, focus on improving your combat skills and those of your personal unit, you’re going to need them.”
After providing a solution for the young man, Sanada turned around and ignored him, focusing on his little laptop once more.
As for Shye, he also exited the room with his fists clenched along with Shirley.
Three months was a long time.
However, he understood that operation preparations can’t be rushed, or many people would lose their lives.
He couldn’t throw caution to the wind and throw every plan out the window for the sake of a stupid and unprepared attempt at saving his friend.
He could only wait for three months and pray for the safety of Wendy’s soul in the meantime.
“S-Shye, are we really just gonna…” Shirley asked, her voice shaking.
“Yes. For now, we have no other choice but to comply.”
Shye also wanted to do more if he could.
Unfortunately, he was but a young man with no other capabilities except for combat at the moment, so he could only rely on the old man and his operations.
Feeling helpless and slightly disheartened after his conversation with the old man, Shye reached out to his father.
Earlier, he had asked Maverick to send someone to look after his personal unit and guide them to the large private meeting room provided by Sanada.
“Son, all your men are already in the meeting room. They’re waiting for you,” Maverick said, anticipating Shye’s reason for calling.
“Got it, thanks, Dad.”
*BEEP!*
In a somber and uneasy mood, the couple made their way to the meeting room.
