Chapter 781: Wendy Isn’t Coming
The scheduled meeting time was fast approaching.
Hence, since an hour ago, members of Shye’s personal unit had been entering the meeting room one by one, most of them fresh from Hadean Varsa’s training room.
Initially, they were worried that they might not be able to improve their combat capabilities as effectively as they could back when they were at Valenzia City.
However, to their surprise, the Hadean Varsa Training Rooms were not only spacious but also way more complete in terms of training machines compared to their guild’s training halls.
Even if they chose to spend money on prestigious training centers in Valenzia City, they wouldn’t experience such effective training sessions.
This was why most of them were eager to return to training and excited to try out other machines.
There were even a few sinister machines they didn’t dare touch for now.
After all, although the said machines could improve their attributes way faster, there was a warning that they would have to pay with their lifespan.
The more they were willing to sacrifice, the more they would gain from the machines.
Still, despite such harrowing warnings, they did not completely shut off the idea that they might use the machines themselves.
At the end of the day, they would face a battle against Dweezel’s forces and might have to rely on those machines in the future, especially in dire situations.
In terms of combat prowess, all of them were now around the level of low to high-tier adamantites.
This was all due to Shye’s generous rewards system that his men had now grown this strong from mere diamond and mithril-ranked adventurers.
What they didn’t expect was that, soon, they would be in for another surprise.
Slowly, the metallic door of the designated meeting room opened, revealing two youngsters—Shye and Shirley.
“We greet the division leader!” the members of the unit exclaimed in unison.
Of course, despite their closeness, Ian and the others also did the same to set a good example for others.
Shye was in no mood to smile, though, so he simply raised his hand in greeting.
“Everyone, from now on, would call me ‘Commander,’ as that’s my rank in this organization,” he demanded in a slightly serious tone.
Shye typically didn’t care for titles.
However, he knew this small change would help his men understand that they were no longer just a division in a guild but a formal military unit under Hadean Varsa.
This was why he instructed them to use the new title moving forward.
“Understood, Commander!” They responded in unison, prompting Shye to nod satisfactorily.
The next moment, Ian walked closer to Shye, whispering:
“Shye, Wendy still hasn’t arrived, and she’s not responding to any of our messages.”
“Yeah, about that. I’ll explain.”
After a quick secret conversation with Ian, Shye turned to face his unit members.
“Everyone, I’m sure most of you noticed that Wendy Primrose, our unit’s priestess heroine, has still not arrived.” He began, eliciting various reactions from his unit. “She’s not coming.”
Upon hearing such worrying words, Ian and the others’ eyes widened, and they couldn’t help but anxiously demand an explanation.
“Sh– C-Commander, what do you mean she’s not coming?” Ian asked.

Aside from Shirley and Shye, he was one of the few who spent significant time with Wendy, accompanying her to her guild branch and even waiting for her promotion to the Valenzia Branch to go there together.
“Wendy has been abducted by that damned Dweezel Hawkins. According to the old man, that bastard plans to use her as a test subject in his experiments.”
The explanation hit everyone hard, and the more faint-hearted among them turned pale.
One of the pillars of their unit had been captured!
Shye could’ve chosen to keep things a secret from the others and inform only his most trusted friends like Ian, Kiin, and the others.
However, he decided to transparently tell everyone what was going on for a reason
It was to make them realize and prepare their hearts for the possibility that not only could their closest friends lose their lives on the battlefield, but they themselves might also perish.
After all, if even Wendy Primrose, who was an absurdly overpowered priestess, could be captured by Dweezel’s men, then how could they be sure that they would be safe?
They had to take things seriously.
Just because Shye was their commander didn’t mean they were truly invincible.
Judging from their reactions, it seemed that Shye had achieved his goal.
It was quite ruthless and insensitive of him to use his friend as an example. However, what else could he do but make lemonade out of the lemons life had handed him?
“C-Commander, i-is Lady Wendy already dead?” One of the more courageous ones among his unit members asked stutteringly.
“No, she’s still alive. At least her physical body should be safe.” He responded cryptically, not explaining anything about what he said and proceeding to discuss the plan with them.
“We’ll attempt to save her in three months. For now, your mission is to boost our unit’s combat capabilities as much as possible, since we’ll be infiltrating a heavily fortified enemy stronghold. I’ll be monitoring your progress using this combat power estimator. While it’s not one hundred percent accurate, it’s still over ninety percent reliable, and it will allow us to measure our combat strength, giving us a clear idea of how much we’ve improved.” Shye continued, retrieving a strange apparatus resembling an hourglass with a mana core inside.
Unfortunately for him, it wouldn’t be easy to distract everyone from the harsh reality that three months was a long time, and the person they were trying to rescue might already be dead by then.
“Three months? Isn’t that too long? Why can’t we rescue her sooner?” Kiin instigated, feigning deep concern for Wendy’s well-being while subtly trying to stir unrest among Shye’s people and gather information at the same time.
A clever move designed to kill three birds with one stone.
