Chapter 796: A Dark Day
Two months and three weeks flew by in the blink of an eye.
Today, the world’s capital, Yon Augenn City, is just as vibrant and bustling as ever.
The one true City of Dreams.
Adventurers moved to and fro along the wide, well-constructed streets, some even sprinting, as they gave their all to build their reputations while savoring the experience.
They seemed to be truly happy and content with their occupation.
Now adept at hunting almost every kind of creature, the high-ranking ones had little worries in their hearts and minds.
They, after all, could consider themselves to have made it in life.
It was a fact that they were already very successful.
Furthermore, with their strength and mastery of their craft, hunting wasn’t as dangerous as it used to be.
While it was inevitable that some would lose their lives, the numbers of those who did were but a mere drop of water in an ocean.
On the other hand, the ordinary citizens fortunate enough to secure jobs with various guilds and establishments in Yon Augenn City were just as happy, if not more so.
Their employers offered significantly higher wages compared to those in less developed and less renowned cities.
Hence, without having to risk their lives like adventurers, they, too, could provide a fairly great life for their families.
As a bonus, they and their families would get a chance to live in the most secure and prosperous city as long as they save for a few years and manage their finances well.
It was simply impossible for platinum-ranked adventurers and below to even live a life as good as theirs.
This was why the hardworking mundane citizens of Yon Augenn City frequently offered their thanks to the gods and goddesses, often daily, deeply appreciative of the blessings they enjoyed.
However, today, it would be hard for them to feel as thankful.
“Lord Hale, we have an emergency!” Horwell, the guard captain overseeing security on the city’s outskirts, burst into the office of Hale Eversong—the Head Director of the WAA and the Lord of Yon Augenn City—panting heavily, a mix of exhaustion and urgency etched on his face.
“Calm down, Horwell.” Hale Eversong responded, a frown on his face. “Take a few breaths then begin.”
The guard captain was slightly ashamed of losing his composure. He was, after all, already a captain of a squad of Yon Augenn City Guards.
His heart shouldn’t be shaken easily.
After taking a few deep breaths like his lord instructed, Horwell began his report:
“Monster hordes began forming in all four directions two hours ago. While their numbers are still small, the rapid rate at which they’re growing suggests they could reach [Catastrophic]-level. At this rate, it will be impossible for the garrisoned guards on all sides to hold them back!”
Hearing the report, Hale Eversong’s eyes narrowed.
This was not just some random monster horde.
No.
‘These damned terrorists just won’t quit!’ the lord inwardly raged, perplexed and tired of the problems caused by the bastards.
The mana dungeon problem still persists, and there were no signs of it being solved any time soon, which meant that the world’s very existence was currently at risk.
Yet, the damned bastards still insist on causing trouble as if they weren’t concerned at all whether the world would collapse or not.
So what if they succeeded in their plans?

They wouldn’t be able to savor the fruits of their wickedness if there was no world left for them to live in, would they?
Nonetheless, Hale knew that no matter how much he complained about the shitty problems going his way on a regular basis, it wouldn’t solve a thing.
Hence, with a deep breath, he recollected himself.
“I see, good work in detecting the horde early.” the old man praised generously. “I agree that it would be difficult for the guards to defend against such a horde without assistance from the adventurers. Return to your post for now and observe the horde. I shall make the necessary arrangements.”
“Understood, Milord!” Horwell responded, visibly more at ease now as he exited Hale’s office.
Meanwhile, the old director had a cold smirk on his face.
‘Unfortunately for you bastards, you chose the wrong time to attack.’
Hours passed, and soon, the monster horde outside the city had indeed reached the [Catastrophic] level.
The mangled and mutilated remains of merchant caravans, unfortunate commoners, and adventurers lay scattered across the fields.
Their decision to travel toward Yon Augenn City could not have come at a worse time.
If the guards looked more closely, they would notice humans hidden among the hordes—soul tamers of Hadean Varsa—carefully making preparations to minimize the losses of the monsters they had painstakingly nurtured.
After all, this assault was merely a probing one.
The objective was to pressure Yon Augenn City enough to force a response, giving Sanada the information he needed to strategize his full-scale attack effectively.
“Delta Three here. Preparations for the eastern horde are complete.”
“Copy that, Delta Two. The western horde is ready as well.”
“Delta One reporting. The northern horde needs five more minutes.”
“Delta Four here. Southern horde is fully prepared.”
At this moment, the once lively atmosphere of Yon Augenn had long given way to a tense and uneasy silence, leaving its inhabitants anxious and deeply unsettled.
Hale knew it would be impossible to keep the news from his citizens.
Therefore, he decided to inform them of the impending attack.
While it would undoubtedly stir anxiety and unease, it would also better prepare them for what was to come.
After all, if the citizens contributed to the chaos, it would make the situation far more difficult to manage than necessary.
A few more minutes later, the earth began rumbling, followed by a loud exclamation from Horwell:
“The monster horde targeting the northern gates has begun its attack!”
Soon after, the other guard captains leading the squads on their respective sides of the city began reporting that the other [Catastrophic] level hordes had also begun their charge toward the city gates.
With four such hordes surrounding Yon Augenn City, fear took hold of the citizens—at least, until a few key individuals arrived.
