Chapter 797: Assault on Yon Augenn
At all four gates, ten thousand guards stood ready outside the city, their expressions determined and their hearts resolute.
They knew already that with them alone, it was impossible to defend the city against the approaching [Catastrophic]-level monster hordes.
However, they knew that the citizens of the city were relying on them. They would never back down.
They were so courageous because they knew all too well how strong the adventurers of Yon Augenn City were.
With their assistance, the world’s capital would never fall—not to mere monster hordes, at least.
They had even withstood the apocalyptic attack of a deity in the past; what was there to fear now?
Furthermore, a pillar stood right in front of them, far more reliable than any other.
“We greet Sir Lancelot Lioncrest of the Indomitable Might!”
“We greet Lady Lissandra Lawliet of the Crimson Lotus!”
“We greet Sir Alexander Aphelion of the Boundless Shadows!”
“We greet Lady Kalista Cloudvigor of the Precise Annihilation”
The voices of the guards at all four gates rang out, their excitement evident in the tone of their voices.
Typically, heroes were out on missions, so they didn’t rely on one arriving to aid them, though they certainly hoped for it.
To their surprise, a hero had indeed answered their call.
Moreover, around three-thousand five-hundred adamantite-ranked adventurers were beginning to converge from all corners of the city, significantly boosting their chances of successfully defending the gates and keeping the monsters at bay.
The future began to look promising, and the nervousness and unease in the citizens’ hearts gradually faded.
After all, how could their city—the strongest and most developed city in the world—possibly fall to mere mindless monsters?
While the guards weren’t as strong as adamantite-ranked adventurers, they were at least around peak-emerald to peak-mithril in terms of combat strength.
There were also squad leaders who were at least as strong as mid-adamantites.
It wouldn’t be so easy for the monster horde to break through such a tough roster of defenders.
Soon, the rumbling of the earth became more intense and terrifying, heralding the arrival of the horrifying hordes.
The northern horde was led by the apex (S) ranked monster, Bloodmoon Bakunawa, using the strength of its serpent-like muscles to lunge at the city gates.
However, how could Horwell Hearth, an honorable Guard Captain of the Yon Augenn City Guards, allow it to easily destroy the gates?
Placing his adamantite-tier shield in front, the guard captain decisively planted his feet on the ground.
He was not about to back down from the horrifying attack of an apex monster.
“Like hell I’ll let you enter my city!” Horwell exclaimed with a furious expression. “Lion’s Fortress!”
In the next moment, a translucent image of an ancient fortress, adorned with a lion flag, appeared in front of him and his shield, bringing the Bloodmoon Bakunawa’s lunge to an abrupt halt.
Black and red sparks flew as the massive maw of the apex monster collided with the ancient fortress, unleashing fierce winds that forced some of the guards to shield their eyes by raising their arms.
The monsters in the horde, far larger and heavier than any human, were naturally unaffected by the fierce winds.
They pressed on past the stopped Bakunawa, charging fiercely into the ranks of the city guards.

Chaos then ensued as the horde clashed with the defenders.
Phantasms of shields and fortifications materialized in front of the warrior-class guards, while the mage squadron assisted in halting the charge by conjuring thick walls of earth and ice.
Various fields of flames and thunder then appeared beneath the monsters, deterring them from moving forward recklessly.
Order was soon restored on the battlefield.
The warriors formed a solid and organized line at the front, while archers and mages launched projectiles from behind.
Priests and priestesses occasionally tended to the wounded frontliners, healing them as needed, while also casting restriction and offensive spells to assist the combat classes in taking down the monsters targeted by each squadron.
However, this did not mean the guards faced no challenges.
Some frontliners faltered, their bodies crushed into mere pulp, leaving the backlines exposed.
Soon, the archer and mage squadrons behind the fallen warriors quickly became nothing more than meat pastes themselves.
Nonetheless, the brutality was mutual, with monsters also being reduced to ash, their heads shattered like watermelons and their flesh sliced up like cuts of steak.
Such scenes naturally occurred at all four city gates.
As time went by, the weaker city guards were slowly pushed back.
Seeing the scene unfold, the four heroes sprang into action, rallying random parties of adamantite-ranked adventurers behind them to join the fight.
Soon, the number of monsters—initially over a hundred thousand, ranging from (C)-ranked to (S)-ranked—began to dwindle at a rate that pained the hearts of the soul tamers of Hadean Varsa.
Nonetheless, the monsters’ deaths were not in vain, as the attack provided Sanada with the information he needed.
The combat strength Yon Augenn City could muster, even when caught by surprise, was truly terrifying, and it was currently on full display for the world to see.
The terrorist commanders watching the battle unfold could only watch in silence, imagining the overwhelming power of the world’s most heavily defended city if it had been prepared for an attack.
They knew they could not allow the city to learn of any future assaults in advance.
If they did, their armies, along with their monster hordes, would be wiped out in mere minutes.
Unfortunately, all the objectives of their probing attack haven’t been achieved yet.
Several thousand more monsters would need to be sacrificed.
Observing the situation inside the city from atop a tall tree, Maverick Crowley narrowed his eyes, pulling out his mana communicator.
“Commander Alicia, are preparations ready on your side?”
“Yes, Commander Maverick, my strike force is ready to attack.
“Excellent. Once your force launches, send a signal to Alpha One.”
“Understood.”
The two were husband and wife, but as commanders, they couldn’t let personal matters influence their decisions.
Also, in such a situation, it would be inappropriate to call each other “honey.”
Using their names and ranks was far more fitting.
After two more minutes of observation, Maverick launched a signal flare into the sky, marking the beginning of the probing operation’s second phase: forcing the hidden defenses of the WAA and Yon Augenn City to reveal themselves.
