Chapter 808: Comparison – The Thief of Joy
Kirov’s ears perked up at Sanada’s question.
He was among those people who focused wholeheartedly on combat and was not too interested in anything related to fame.
Nonetheless, in their world, one’s strength usually more or less translated to fame, so Kirov was at least aware of Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn’s existence.
Well, who wouldn’t when such an insanely strong and talented young man was fated to be one’s opponent?
Thus, upon suddenly receiving news from Hakkin that the famed young hero turned out to be one of them, Kirov was excited.
He had long wanted to try his hand against the young hero, though he was quite sure he would lose based on the feats Shye had achieved such as taking down a mythical creature.
Kirov was initially taken aback when Shye removed his mask as the four of them made their way to the meeting room to report to Sanada.
However, on second thought, he couldn’t think of anyone more suited to lead the Alpha Squadron—a small team of insanely powerful individuals, described by the old man in the final meeting before the probing operation as being on par in combat prowess with the WAA Heroes.
After all, before Shye joined, only two commanders were qualified to battle Yon Augennian Heroes in a duel: Commander Chaos and Commander Cobra.
Hakkin, while capable of battling heroes from the Deltra region and lower-ranked regions, would ultimately be outmatched by the Yon Augennians.
Not even mentioning Alexander Aphelion, Hakkin’s chances of defeating even the likes of Baradur Pentagon of the Holy Sword and Saorus Calamitas of the Heaven’s Wrath were extremely slim.
The organization had previously taken down a few heroes with the help of advanced devices and a bit of strategic cunning.
However, among their ranks, only Commander Chaos and Commander Cobra possessed exceptionally high dueling prowess.
Commander Chaos cemented his fearsome reputation by grievously wounding Lissandra Lawliet of the Crimson Lotus, the current Yon Augennien Mage Hero.
On the other hand, Commander Cobra gained infamy not only for swiftly taking the head of a Fanfirian Scout Hero within minutes but also for holding his ground for a full ten minutes against the Yon Augennian Warrior Hero, Lancelot Lioncrest of the Indomitable Might.
The sudden emergence of four individuals at a comparable level—some possibly even surpassing the two commanders in terms of combat prowess—was an incredibly welcome boost to the organization.
Kirov could more or less estimate Hawkin Guard Captain Balkan’s individual combat prowess.
While he was slightly beneath the WAA’s renowned Guard Captain Targon, the difference wasn’t too huge, and it would be extremely difficult for Targon to defeat Balkan in a short amount of time.
If they fought, the duel would likely last for hours before the outcome would be decided.
Commander Alicia claimed that each of those monstrous, hulking warriors was nearly on par with Balkan in terms of combat prowess, so the sight of two hundred of them charging as a unified force must have been truly terrifying.
However, according to the reports, Alpha One—also known as Commander Black Dawn— single-handedly took down over twenty of those monsters while relentlessly pursuing the severely wounded Balkan, determined to end his life.
Moreover, it appeared that Balkan didn’t even last a minute against Shye in a duel.
To Kirov, even imagining Commander Black Dawn’s combat prowess felt like a difficult task, as he had neither fought against nor witnessed such power.
‘No…’
On second thought, he had. Just a few minutes ago, in fact.
‘Alexander Aphelion…I wonder who’s stronger between the two?’ Kirov mused.
He personally saw the chilling sight of Hakkin’s neck spurting out blood just ten seconds into his battle against the young Yon Augennian Scout Hero, so he couldn’t help but think that such prowess in combat must at least be close to that of Shye’s.
At that moment, Kirov wanted to know the disparity between him and the young man standing just a few meters beside him.
He knew this wasn’t the right time to ask for combat pointers, though, so he decided to start gauging Commander Black Dawn’s true combat strength by paying close attention to his description of the monstrous warrior unit’s power.
“Hm, I’d say they’re certainly monstrous in terms of raw attributes,” Shye said casually. “But their combat techniques are repetitive, limited to [Power Slash], [Dash], and [Indomitable Will]. Given unlimited time, I could take down all two hundred of them on my own.”

What amazed Kirov wasn’t just Shye’s confidence, but the complete lack of arrogance in his tone.
If it were him, he might manage to take on two or three of those warriors at once, but there was no doubt he’d be overwhelmed and killed if surrounded by two hundred.
Just from this, Kirov concluded that even if a hundred of him surrounded Shye, they would all be slaughtered like pigs.
As for Commander Hakkin…
‘Unbelievable… this guy is as strong as thirty, maybe even forty or fifty Commander Hakkins?’ he thought.
Kirov himself was one of the strongest Vice Commanders, second only to Vice Commander Feather of Commander Chaos’ Strike Force and Vice Commander Viper, who served under Commander Cobra.
He was likely only marginally weaker than Alicia, if not on par with her in terms of dueling prowess.
Hence, he found it difficult that someone could be as strong as Shye, to the point that not even a hundred of him would be enough to take him down.
Inwardly laughing self-deprecatingly, he thought:
‘Heh, how would I even avenge the commander if I’m this weak?’
Before he had an estimate of how strong Shye was, Kirov believed that he was pretty strong himself—a valuable military asset to Hadean Varsa.
However, now he found himself lost, uncertain of his purpose.
Then there was that Alpha Three guy, who managed to defeat two heroes in a single day—one was forced to retreat like a beaten dog, while the other was saved only by the retreat signal.
If he wasn’t needed, then why had he pushed himself so hard in the first place?
Truly, comparison was the thief of joy.
