Chapter 844: I Shall Claim One In the Afterlife
The distance between the two dragons decreased by the second, Shye’s fists clenching tighter.
‘Fine then, I shall bear testament to your resolve, Menas.’ he thought.
The next moment, the roaring flames made contact with the howling winds, causing black smoke to cover the entire scene as the flame energy exploded violently.
No one except the two dragons knew what was going on.
Did the challenger already succumb to his injuries?
There was no way a barely breathing elder fire dragon could survive such a clash, no?
It was then that two figures—the silhouettes of their bodies interlocked with each other—began to crash down from the clearing skies.
As the majestic sun resumed its duties of providing golden rays of light to the world, everyone could finally see what was happening clearly.
Menas positioned himself behind Zephyrus, locking the emperor’s arms in a full-nelson hold while sinking his teeth into the back of Zephyrus’s slightly elongated, silver-scaled neck.
The elder fire dragon then unleashed a torrent of flames from his mouth, roasting the Wind Dragon Emperor at point-blank range.
Caught off guard, Zephyrus could only roar in anguish.
He could feel his flesh scales slowly giving way as his flesh melted.
The emperor struggled as hard as he could, but unfortunately, his arms were locked in place.
He couldn’t move.
For a few seconds, the rather brutal yet glorious scene continued to unfold.
As the dragons neared the ground, the Wind Dragon Emperor’s roar grew louder and his resistance, fiercer.
But none worked.
“Let go, you fool! At this rate, we’ll both die!” the Wind Dragon Emperor roared in panic, half of his head grotesquely burned.
He hoped to drill some sense into Menas’ mind.
Unfortunately for him, sense and logic had never been a fire dragon’s strong point, and his logical argument was met with a mad laugh.
“HAHAHAHAHA! Then so be it!” Menas roared in response. “If there’s no throne for me in this life, I’ll claim one in the afterlife and begin my reign there. As for your crown, I’ll bury it with you!”
Immediately after the elder fire dragon finished speaking, the two dragons slammed into the ground of the vast Windswept Plains, sending dirt and flora flying in all directions.
Despite their flight speed and the gravity working in unison to speed up their descent, it still took Menas and Zephyrus a few seconds before they arrived at the ground—a testament to the dangerous altitude they came from.
Even dragons with physiques as tough as theirs would suffer from broken bones and mangled flesh after crashing from such a height at full throttle.
Shye could feel his connection with Menas slowly dissipating, causing his teeth to make cracking sounds due to how much force he was applying to his grit.
His nails had also dug into the flesh of his palms.
He hadn’t spent a lot of time with this elder fire dragon tame, but Menas’ peerless resolve made Shye appreciate him.
The feelings in Shye’s heart, however, weren’t of grief but rather regret over the loss of a mighty and extremely competent underling.
‘Was there anything I could have done in preparation to increase the chances of the second method succeeding?’ he wondered, the thought gnawing at him.
He felt guilty for having little faith in turning Menas into an emperor.

If he just believed more, he would’ve made more preparations.
Soon, the dust cleared, revealing two figures lying on their backs—their wings utterly destroyed.
Menas and Zephyrus spat out alarming volumes of blood, and their eyes slowly began to dim.
Yet, despite being on death’s door, a weak laugh escaped the former, his words clear as day in the now-silent plains.
“Hahaha, I bet…you never expected…this day to come so soon, cowardly emperor.” Menas taunted, wasting whatever small energy he had left.
Zephyrus, on the other hand, was unfamiliar with the feeling of barely breathing.
In fact, this was his first experience being so close to death.
He couldn’t even find and muster the energy to retort.
Nonetheless, although boring as his opponent couldn’t even talk back, Menas kept on going.
“Hahaha…yes, go and kick the damn bucket first. I shall follow you to the afterlife soon enough with your crown in my head.”
Realizing that their emperor was dying, the wind dragons howled in a storm of emotions—joy at the thought of newfound freedom, yet profound grief for the loss of the emperor they once revered and worshipped, who was now about to leave the world forever.
On the other side, however, it was only boundless regret.
Seeing Menas’ current state, Shye knew that while there was a slim possibility of saving the elder fire dragon if he acted now, he couldn’t, as he had to make sure that Zephyrus died first.
Otherwise, it would count as him intervening.
Menas would undoubtedly not appreciate him doing so.
‘Appraisal! Appraisal! Appraisal!’
Shye desperately used his appraisal skill, repeatedly checking for a ‘(Corpse)’ indicator beside the Wind Dragon Emperor’s name.
He was in a battle against time, as his connection with Menas was already flickering, which meant that the elder fire dragon himself was about to lose his life.
Unfortunately, it seemed that his tame was destined to die today.
The Wind Dragon Emperor desperately clung on to his life.
After ten long seconds, Zephyrus finally departed, prompting Shye to spring into action and swiftly reappear beside Menas, who was still spouting fighting words.
“Bahaha…crap, I can’t hear anything…hey, coward…have you…died already?” the elder fire dragon said, turning its attention to Shye upon noticing him arrive. “Oh? Master, great timing…tell me…did…I…win?”
“Yes, great job, Menas, you won. Zephyrus had already died.” Shye confirmed, retrieving multiple peak-grade potions from his inventory as fast as he could while doing so.
Although Menas couldn’t hear his words, the elder fire dragon still managed to read his lips, causing a satisfied smile to emerge on his draconic face.
“Bahahahkk!…Finally…I can depart in peace…” Menas laughed one last time.
Shye poured health potion after health potion into his dying tame’s mouth, but unfortunately, the bodies of dragons were way larger than humans.
A potion would only take effect after at least thirty seconds.
Sadly, Menas couldn’t last that long, and the connection between them was completely snuffed out just a few seconds later.
