Chapter 856: Ruins Of A Once Vibrant World
That day, the Hadean Varsa chefs encountered their first war against the grumbling stomachs of the elites, which they thought they would lose halfway through.
Luckily, they were able to pull through and stabilize the situation towards the end.
Meanwhile, a few elites—who were also close friends—grouped up, fully filled-up plates resting in their hands.
They began speaking in whispers, occasionally glancing at those involved in the gossip.
“Hey, did you see the looks the Feng and Tigren Units were giving the Black Dawn and Kirov elites?” asked a slim female elite from the Hurkan Unit to her comrade.
“Yeah, hahaha.” laughed a bald muscular man from the same unit. “I think there will be a show other than the so-called ‘special event’ later, no?”
“Hahahaha, that’s what I think too.” responded the female elite before asking: “Which unit do you think will come out on top if sh*t goes down?”
Commander Hurkan was a respectable and strong commander who was in his mid-thirties, and his unit was in the top five when it came to reputation within the organization.
Yet, for some reason, he refuses to mingle with the old heads like Commander Feng, Commander Tigren, and Commander Grover, whose units ranked around the same as his.
Naturally, his elites followed suit.
This was why the Hurkan elites could remain neutral—their opinions, logical—despite not being able to cross-train with the Kirov and Black Dawn Unit due to their commander having no interest in paying the main headquarters a visit.
They didn’t resent the undeserved attention and reputation the two units were gaining, believing that the rumors should be true to some extent.
“Well, I don’t think the Supreme One would allow his elites to kill each other, especially at such a crucial time,” the bald, muscular man replied honestly. “However, to be frank, I don’t think the rumors are baseless. Furthermore, many units that cross-trained with the Kirov and Black Dawn Units have all said the same thing: the elites of those two units are monsters.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard about that too,” the female elite agreed. “So, do you think the Kirov Unit could outperform the units of those three old heads? If so, wouldn’t it be better for them to be assigned to either Valenzia or Yon Augenn?”
“That’s…a different matter.” the bald man answered. “I’d still entrust my back to facts rather than rumors.”
“Hmm… that’s true…then what ab–”
Before the female elite could shift the topic to Shye and Cobra’s intense dislike for each other, she abruptly stopped, sensing an overwhelming presence on the elevated platform at the front of the function hall.
Her eyes then widened, and she dropped to her knees.
“We greet the Supreme One!” the elites greeted in unison.
Most of the commanders, however, skipped the unnecessary greeting, knowing full well that the old man wouldn’t mind such trivial matters.
As for Kirov, he forgot that he, too, could bypass the greetings, having only recently been promoted a few months ago.
He knelt alongside his elites.
“Everyone, line up,” Sanada ordered, causing the ground to rumble as the elites scrambled to form rows and columns with their comrades from the same unit.
It was only after two whole chaotic minutes that order returned to the function hall.
With more than twenty thousand elites lined up alongside their units, the Black Dawn Unit, positioned near the units assigned to the Yon Augenn Strike Force—right next to Maverick’s—stood out like a sore thumb.
After all, every other unit had more than a thousand members, while the Black Dawn was only three-hundred-strong.
Nonetheless, each member of the unit stood as straight as a spear, an aura of pride radiating from them merely standing.
The mere sight of them annoyed Cobra to no end.
“Now then, we shall begin the simulation.” Sanada declared.
Moments later, servants entered the room, pushing ten carts, each carrying a massive Mana Stone.

Strangely, the stones were purple, rather than the usual blue.
This unusual color was the result of enhancements made by Sanada’s soul researchers.
The old terrorist leader then pressed a button on the remote control he was holding, causing the ground to rumble as huge openings in the middle of each gigantic pillar in the massive function hall emerged.
They seemed to fit the enormous diamond-shaped mana stones.
Shye and the other commanders watched in amazement as the mana stones began to levitate towards each opening, seemingly pre-assigned to each one.
After another horrifying rumble, the entire hall was devoured by a sphere of darkness that originated from the middle of the hall, though everyone could still strangely see each other.
It was as if all of them were simultaneously transported into another world.
The world of darkness began glitching for a full minute before, suddenly, everyone found themselves in the middle of an endless wasteland—parched earth as far as the eyes could see.
Scattered around them were bones of monsters, crumbling rocks, desolate winds, and dead trees.
Not a single sign of life could be seen or heard.
Sanada’s voice then sounded from above, as though a god overseeing the world.
“Look closely and engrave this world into your hearts and minds. This…is the world your loved ones and the future generations would have to live in if we failed.”
Everyone’s heart sank, a wave of desolation and despair washing over them.
This was especially true for Maia.
Not only was she the youngest, but she was also the most recent recruit, and although Maverick and Alicia had briefed her on the world’s situation, she still found it hard to believe that the world was on the brink of ruin.
All this time, this was the burden her big brother had been shouldering alone.
She gulped as her heart raced.
However, after a few seconds, she snapped out of the despairing feeling in her heart, resolving herself to not allow such a thing to happen as long as she breathed.
Similar scenes unfolded throughout the function hall, particularly among the younger members of Hadean Varsa, aged thirty and below.
However, even some of the older and more emotional individuals were affected.
Unbeknownst to them, the overwhelming emotion they felt—though genuine at its core—was amplified by a subtle illusion formation Sanada had employed to heighten their feelings.
It was the old man’s method of fortifying his men’s resolve.
Like Maia, none of them would allow such a grim fate to befall the world they loved and inhabited.
