Chapter 866: Stubborn Old Fools
Shye narrowed his eyes at Chaos’ words.
Still, he couldn’t agree more—believing that it might indeed be him and Chaos who should attempt to break through the golden barrier.
Shirley was powerful, but she lacked experience in such high-level combat.
Entrusting her with such a crucial role would be premature.
Even amidst his rampage across the battlefield earlier, Shye had caught glimpses of the unserious commander’s brilliance in combat.
Chaos always managed to eliminate his targets in only one to three continuous strikes.
Naturally, he wanted to learn more about this powerful comrade of his.
How much faith could he place in the commander’s combat prowess?
“Now then, green mango, are you up to the task?” Chaos asked with a playful grin before continuing.
“If you don’t want to, that’s fine. After all, you’re still young, so backing out of such huge responsibilities like a chicken is quite normal. Don’t worry, don’t worry! I, Chaos, am an understanding commander. I completely understand if you’d rather wuss out of the current situation.”
Shye, however, wasn’t fazed by the commander’s taunts.
He knew Chaos was merely trying to exploit the hot-blooded side of his youth to ensure he wouldn’t back down.
Instead, he decided to play along, aiming to hype up the events that would follow.
Who knows?
He might even earn enough system points to upgrade his system to level 5 with his point farming scheme that was approved by the old man himself.
“Hmph! Why would I back down when I’m truly the only one fit for the task? I agree, you and I are enough.”
Hearing Shye’s reply, Chaos’ mouth momentarily fell open before snapping shut again.
The commander was caught off guard and had to fight the overwhelming urge to give Shye a thumbs-up while jumping up and down in excitement.
Even the elites and a few of the vice commanders couldn’t help but feel excited, anticipating an escalation.
The two old heads, as expected, wouldn’t let such disrespect slide—especially since it was anything but subtle.
“So young yet already so arrogant!” exclaimed Commander Feng, enraged. “How could someone with such a poor personality and reckless behavior be an excellent commander? Raw strength doesn’t win battles, kid.”
From the get-go, this particular commander had harbored a dislike for Shye and his growing reputation.
He believed that an unproven greenhorn like Shye shouldn’t be receiving so much attention, as it would only lead to arrogance without the skills to back it up, which would then lead to unnecessary losses or even horrendous defeats on the battlefield.
Needless to say, the old heads were just partly jealous that they weren’t receiving such attention despite proving themselves time and again.
Unfortunately, their combat styles were conventional and boring, causing them to be rather unpopular compared to aggressive and interesting fighters like Cobra and Chaos.
Now that even a rookie commander was more famous than them, they would naturally be a bit unsatisfied.
Of course, Commander Tigren would back his old buddy up:
“Indeed, I acknowledge that you and your elites are strong. However, your words just now reveal the mind of a youngster—making you unfit to lead such a powerful unit. Under your incompetent command, your men will only march to their deaths.”
Shye knew that allowing Tigren and Feng to shift the topic to his prowess in terms of commanding his unit would be unwise.
After all, although his unparalleled calmness in battle allowed him to make sound decisions, he wouldn’t dare claim to be able to do the same if someone extremely dear to him were in a perilous situation.

Nor would he claim to possess his father’s brilliance in skirmish strategies.
He knew himself well enough to avoid taking the obvious bait the two commanders dangled before him.
If he did, Feng and Tigren would surely humiliate him with their superior command skills, honed through hundreds of battles of varying scales.
“Hmm? And what does strategy or the ability to lead a unit have to do with breaking through this golden barrier?” he asked mockingly, his sharp retort coming without hesitation.
“Oh, I see—are you saying you could lead your way past the simulation’s golden barrier? Fine, then. How about this: you two try leading your units to break through first. Let’s see if you’ll have fewer casualties than if it’s just Chaos and me.”
The subtle cold smiles on the two old heads’ faces froze upon hearing Shye’s words.
Efficiency-wise, having their units attempt to break through the barrier would only lead to unnecessary deaths.
They indeed misspoke.
“H-Hmph!”
Rattled, Commander Feng could only grunt, still struggling to think of a comeback—though it seemed unlikely, as his mind had already blanked out.
Meanwhile, Chaos had already pulled a pack of popcorn from his spatial bag, watching everything unfold with a satisfied smile.
Feng was fortunate to have Commander Tigren by his side, who could still think clearly despite being pressed and humiliated so brutally.
“That’s not what we’re implying, arrogant brat. We’re just saying it would be more efficient for the four of us to attack than with only the two of you!”
Shye, however, only laughed at his words:
“Hahaha! You sure know how to twist words, old chicken. How could you, who’ve done nothing but criticize my ability to lead, be implying something different? Anyway, I won’t bicker with a hard-headed old fool like you anymore. Fine, if you think it would be more efficient for the four of us to fight together, then let’s see if what you stubborn geezers said is true.”
Chaos was naturally a bit disappointed that Shye decided to give the old heads a way out just like that.
With a sigh and a carefree shrug, he spoke, patting his chest for emphasis:
“Fine then. Since young green mango here has decided to give the esteemed almighty Tigren’s strategy a chance, I, Chaos, shall fully cooperate!”
The two old heads, especially Commander Feng, were extremely satisfied, feeling victorious after getting their way.
