Chapter 884: The “Supplies”
Shye allowed the old man to calm down for a few hours, choosing to train with his elites for a while before meeting up with Reginald, another one of his captains who had just returned from an important mission.
As Alpha Four and a trusted aide of the old man, Reginald had been sent to scout all ten capitals in recent months.
His task was to take note of the guards’ behavior, the timing of their duty shifts, the time of day the WAA Headquarters sent out their agents, and how quickly most of the agents completed their tasks.
It was an enormous undertaking.
However, it was crucial to the success of the unsealing operation.
If they wanted to strike when the opposing side was at its weakest and most unprepared, this reconnaissance was essential.
After talking to Reginald for a good while, Shye went to find Sanada.
He wanted to discuss the issue of the “shortage of supplies.”
Shye had long been curious about the origin of the system’s power-ups, and today, he was determined to uncover the truth, no matter how unsettling it might be.
He didn’t even have to knock on the door, as Sanada had already sensed him.
“Come in,” said the geezer.
Shye naturally entered without any reservations.
“So, old man, you promised to let me peer into the system’s secrets, no?” he asked.
Sanada didn’t reply, instead sighing deeply before snapping his fingers.
In the next moment, Shye found himself standing beside the old man in front of a massive adamantite gate.
On the gate’s left stood the statue of the White Dragon of Creation, and on the right, the Black Dragon of Destruction.
The figures were far smaller than their real-life counterparts.
However, they were still colossal, towering at seven meters tall.
Furthermore, their craftsmanship was exquisite.
It was only after appreciating the statues for a while did he open the gate, entering first while Sanada walked behind him with a frown.
At first, nothing was out of the ordinary, as although soul researchers were performing various experiments inside partitioned laboratories, Shye already expected such a thing.
There wasn’t much change in his expression.
The further they walked, however, the more harrowing the experiments became, eventually causing Shye to frown without realizing it.
His heart began to race as his eyes locked onto a monstrous creature being grotesquely shaped into a human form.
Equally disturbing were the mad researchers conducting experiments on themselves.
Shye didn’t want to watch any longer, so he turned to look at the old man.
“Where’s the ‘supplies’?” he asked.
Sanada naturally realized that the youngster could no longer bear to continue looking at the atrocities he was indirectly creating.
Without hesitation, he stepped ahead of Shye and took the lead, pressing a metallic section of the wall that appeared indistinguishable from the rest.
A small black rune, no larger than the old man’s palm, then materialized with Sanada’s hand positioned precisely in its center.

With a small amount of mana the geezer infused, the wall rumbled and the metallic sections slowly began moving.
A few moments later, a dark, descending staircase was revealed.
This was likely the storeroom of the “supplies.”
The old man, however, stopped him from walking down just yet, handing him a specialized gas mask to wear first.
Both Shye and Sanada possessed excellent night vision, a fact the old man was well aware of.
As such, he didn’t bother activating the lights, knowing it would unnecessarily cost him a few mana stones.
Halfway through, Shye began hearing howls of anguish.
It was difficult to distinguish whether they came from humans or horrifying monsters.
There was no need for Shye to guess, as in just a few more seconds, he would see the origins of the chilling noises.
But not before enduring a bit more psychological torment.
A few seconds later, the blood-curdling aura of the unholy crept up to him, almost tangibly brushing against his skin.
The foul stench of death and decay soon followed, assaulting his senses with its putrid intensity.
At that moment, four of his senses—vision, hearing, touch, and smell—were assaulted in sequence as he descended the dark staircase.
It didn’t take long, however, for his fifth and final sense—taste—to suffer the same fate, as before the supplies came into view, the rotting stench grew so intense that he was able to taste it.
“Blegh…”
Inevitably, Shye vomited.
Fortunately, the gas mask’s design, which allowed a small portion of the mouth area to open automatically, kept him from choking on his own vomit.
Even the seasoned old man was barely holding on.
Shye felt better afterward, and the first thing that came to his mind was how intense the smell would have been had it not been for the mask.
‘What the f*ck is this old fart keeping here?’ he thought.
Finally, after two more steps, he caught a glimpse of the “supplies.”
Covered in the chilling veil of darkness were tens of thousands of humans, all skins and bones.
Their eyes literally bulged out of their sockets, their parched throats begging for moisture, and their deformed noses grasping desperately for breathable air.
They most certainly wanted to die.
Yet, it seemed they couldn’t—more like they weren’t allowed to, not for a while longer.
Of course, there were also others who already died.
As Shye scanned his eyes over the most inhuman scene he had witnessed in his life, his entire body trembled.
He felt a strange connection with them.
It was as if Shye’s soul resonated on varying levels with the souls of the damned—some more strongly than others, and a few evoked a sense of kinship within him.
Overall, the experience was deeply distressing for Shye.
He instinctively felt anger toward Sanada for the old man’s inhumanity.
However, he quickly realized there was no point in being angry at him, and discussing humanity or morality now would be utterly pointless.
Sanada, after all, was just doing everything he could to save the world in his own way.
If the old man, who still retained a semblance of humanity, was capable of such actions, Shye could only imagine the horrors unfolding in Dweezel’s laboratory.
His heart racing and breath heavy, Shye left the “supply storeroom” without saying a single word.
He would most certainly never ask the old man for more.
