Chapter 899: Off To A Great Start
The ground quaked below.
However, the skies weren’t so peaceful either.
Above the relaxing covers of the white clouds, winged monstrosities lurked, with tens of thousands of black-cloaked men standing atop their wide backs.
They flapped their wings vigorously, inching ever closer to their target locations.
There were four groups of flying monsters, and upon reaching a certain spot in the skies, they split up.
Some veered slightly to the right, others to the left; some slowed down, while the rest continued forward.
The Maverick Unit, accompanied by Shye and a few of his elites, headed east of the city center to the WAA Main Headquarters.
Just a few hundred meters north of them lay the City Hall and the teleportation formations of Yon Augenn—the Tigren Unit’s target.
Meanwhile, Kirov and his men planned to land west of the city center.
Their task was to capture the Broadcasting Office and defend it until Sanada completed what he needed there.
Afterward, they were free to leave the Broadcasting Office.
Chaos and his elites, on the other hand, were tasked to infiltrate the Hawkin Mansion also somewhere around the west of the city, quite close to Kirov and his elites.
A few more seconds passed and each unit was soon approaching their target aerial destinations.
With somehow a mix of stern, cold, and confident expression, Maverick turned around and temporarily removed his Commander Mask.
“My Hadean Varsa brothers—noble men of sacrifice, truth, and the future—I stand before you with pride. First and foremost, know that I, Maverick, am honored to fight alongside you.
This will likely be our last operation together—certainly for the better, and never, under any circumstance, for the worse.
I swear upon my life and soul to make sure of it.
Let us make this final operation a memorable one, enough to make it into the history books as the people, the organization that truly stood for what is right, who fought for a future to exist.
We all know that many of us may not survive.
Yet, fear not, for in the years to come, you will not be remembered as a scourge upon the land, but as heroes.
Men who, against all odds, braved the false darkness and seized the true light.”
After a brief pause, Maverick donned his white Hadean Varsa Commander Mask once more.
Then, in the next moment, he drew his black sword and raised it toward the heavens.
“Stand with me, till black blades break, till wounded white souls shatter, and rivers of honorable crimson flow: for the one true dawn! Descend, brave men of noble pandemonium!!”
In the next moment, Maverick let himself fall backward, free-falling through the skies.
The Hadean Varsa elites quickly followed suit, leaping off the backs of the monstrous creatures.
With hearts racing and vigor and valor surging through their veins, they plunged into the descent alongside their respected commanders.
Shye, too, was among those who were currently streaking through the skies like a black meteor.
He couldn’t deny that he was in awe of his father’s capabilities as a leader.
Unfortunately, he didn’t have the luxury of dwelling on such thoughts because as soon as they descended to a height where the headquarters came into clear view, his eyes widened.

Strange, thin rays of red light were aimed at them.
Hundreds.
Shye, of course, quickly realized what they were immediately: turrets.
“BARRIERS!!” he exclaimed in utter urgency.
Maverick’s vision couldn’t see as far and as clearly as his son’s, and his elites would have suffered major losses if not for Shye’s sudden order.
The Maverick elites still hadn’t realized what had happened, but out of instinct, they followed the orders, quickly pressing wristwatch-like devices on their left wrists.
Thousands of small blue barriers then materialized, enveloping the elites in their protective glow.
Soon after, magic missiles, fireballs, and all sorts of horrifyingly powerful projectiles were fired toward the descending terrorists, creating a scene of mayhem in the skies above the eastern part of the city’s center.
It was only then that the head commander realized there were hundreds of mana turrets aimed at his men.
The myriad projectiles soon collided with the descending blue orbs, causing explosions of varying magnitudes.
The blasts momentarily caught the attention of the fleeing citizens, making their hearts race in fear and their bodies tremble.
“Arghh!”
Sounds of shattering mana and screams of agony filled the air.
The mana shields on their devices could only absorb a limited amount of damage.
Once the damage exceeded that limit, the barriers would break, leaving the elites defenseless.
Inevitably, before the Hadean Varsa elites could even land, some had already lost their lives.
They were brutally pierced by magic missiles to the forehead, some burned, others obliterated by blinding rays of light.
It was a demoralizing scene that made the once-roaring morale of the terrorists plummet.
Fortunately, Maverick was sensitive to such stuff, and he immediately realized what he had to do.
“Don’t falter! Steel your resolve! If you cower here, your fallen brothers will have died for nothing!” the head commander exclaimed.
To some degree, this stopped his men’s morale from plummeting further, barely stabilizing the situation.
His words made sense.
They already resolved to die for the noble cause, didn’t they? So why were they cowering over a bad start?
If pull through was what they had to do, then pull through they shall!
After losing roughly four hundred elites to the turrets—though not a bad toll considering how disastrous it could have been—the Hadean Varsa elites finally managed to land.
Little did they know, the turrets were only a prelude to their nightmare.
Before they could stabilize their footing, projectiles from the mage and archer squadrons of the WAA elite guards shot toward them.
Meanwhile, the rumbling march of the warrior guards advanced steadily, surrounding their disorganized ranks.
They were surrounded.
‘Curses!! How did they know we were attacking today?!’ Maverick inwardly cursed, a hint of panic creeping into his heart, though his exterior remained calm and composed.
Based on the enemy’s responses to their attacks in other regions, they shouldn’t have known it was today.
Unless… the bastards were acting, and they’d fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.
