Chapter 920: Surviving
“Stay close!” Shye exclaimed while gritting his teeth.
Only a hundred worn-out warriors remained to protect the little over a thousand spellcasters and archers, who had also suffered casualties.
As the Hadean Varsa warrior ranks thinned, it was inevitable that some Soul Warriors and their lesser versions would break through the cracks in their formations, claiming the lives of a few backliners before succumbing to their relentless barrage of spells and arrows.
The situation only continued to worsen until it reached its current state.
Old Tigren was grievously injured and lay unconscious in the middle of the roughly circular formation of warriors and backliners, with three healers doing their best to mend the wounds he had suffered from the Hawklings.
Meanwhile, his vice commander, Stonecold, had fared even worse—he had already departed to the afterlife after being overwhelmed by three Hawklings.
On the far end of the formation, Feather was barely holding on against the relentless onslaught of five Hawklings, but Shye couldn’t abandon his own post to assist him.
The vice commander had long abandoned hope that the Kirov Unit would arrive on time and had fully resolved to die alongside his men.
At the very least, he took solace in the fact that he would perish as a noble hero.
Although he didn’t know the cause of the earlier earthen tremors, Vice Commander Feather was fairly certain that father time, morality, and numbers were now on their side and that it was only a matter of time before Dweezel’s plan fell apart.
It was a pity he wouldn’t be a part of a new world, but he had long resolved himself for that, had he not?
They’ve won.
The operation’s inevitable success was enough knowledge for him to die with a smile.
Igniting his heart and spirit one last time, the vice commander fought with reckless abandon, hacking and slashing without fear.
His ferocity made it difficult for the five Hawklings to take him down easily.
Feather had embraced a “sure, you can take me down, but I’ll drag one of you down to hell with me” mindset—and none of the Hawklings wanted to be that “one.”
Even so, the heroic vice commander’s time was running out.
The Kirov Unit, of course, was doing its best to reach Shye and the others, but hundreds of Soul Warriors, thousands of Lesser Soul Warriors, and a few abominations were preventing them from even entering the Hawkin Mansion.
They were certainly not in a bad position.
However, victory depended on reaching Shye and the other trapped members of Hadean Varsa on the eighth underground floor of the Hawkin Group Headquarters.
And they were far from achieving that, at least not for another ten minutes.
The Hadean Varsa-WAA coalition army reinforcements from other regions were well aware of Shye and the others’ grim situation, and naturally, they were eager to assist, as this would allow them to storm the old snake’s headquarters, wreaking havoc in the process.
Unfortunately, the damned abominations seemed endless, and somehow, the ones that had recently crawled out from the earthen depths were even stronger than those that had emerged earlier.
Although humanity’s strongest combatants were arriving one after another, the situation wasn’t improving.
They were locked in a stalemate at best, and no one had the freedom to aid Shye and the others.
To make matters worse, the monstrous creatures outside the gates were beginning to suffer a one-sided defeat, their chilling roars of agony filling the air as they fell under the unholy claws and jaws of the abominations.
Time passed, and casualties piled up on both sides.
Dweezel’s forces proved more terrifying than expected, making one wonder why the old snake had been so paranoid about his success.
He had enough strength to contend with Hadean Varsa and the WAA on his own.
But that was just how the old snake was—ever-meticulous, ever-paranoid, unwilling to accept even a single loss.

This was also why Sanada had failed to defeat him all those years ago.
Dweezel was always one step ahead, always prepared—never overestimating himself, sometimes even underestimating himself.
All for the sake of success.
Of course, due to this very same nature of his, he still watched the ongoing battle inside his headquarters with a deep frown.
Shye Crowley was undeniably the most inhuman opponent the old snake had ever faced.
Because of that, Dweezel didn’t dare assume that killing the seemingly invincible bastard was guaranteed—not even with Chaos, twelve Hawklings, and tens of thousands of forbidden warriors surrounding him and his crumbling army.
Sanada and the other directors had also somehow managed to hijack a few observation crystals inside the headquarters and were tuned in—though they were evidently more nervous than the old snake.
The former Voidweaver, in particular, clenched his fists so tightly that his semi-rotting nails pierced his aged skin.
His old heart ached at the sight of Tigren and Feather’s grim situation.
Before long, he could no longer sit still—and he was the first to take action.
Standing abruptly, the ten directors looked at the former terrorist leader.
“I shall take my leave. I have a few things to attend to.”
Sanada then disappeared into the void.
As for where he went and what he was going to do, no one else knew except for the old man himself.
The ten directors knew little about the former terrorist commanders and had never bonded with them at all.
So, while they were concerned for their allies’ well-being, they inwardly wouldn’t care much even if the former terrorists all perished.
Except, of course, for Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn.
With how he nobly sacrificed his own reputation for the sake of saving the world, though none of them knew how unwilling he truly was at the beginning, the directors, at the very least, now addressed and viewed him as an official hero once again.
He was no filthy terrorist commander—he had been Shye Crowley of the Black Dawn all along.
They naturally were unwilling to witness his demise.
Fortunately, their beacon of light was not about to give up, and it seemed he had no intention of doing so as he continued hacking, slashing, and stabbing without a care for his situation.
He fought off the five Hawklings attacking him with ease, all while protecting what remained of his forces by slaughtering tens of forbidden warriors with every swing of his twin greatswords.
There was still no end to their enemies.
However, they were, at the very least, surviving.
For now…
