Chapter 949: Battle of the Black Dragon Gate (3)
“Now!”
A voice erupted from behind the cohort.
However, none of them needed to turn to see who it was, immediately understanding what Shye meant.
Now was the time for them to break through.
They had already seen a silver streak earlier that resembled Luna.
No, it was definitely her, as it was her voice that echoed earlier, luring most of the heroes away with her.
She should be safe.
After all, Shye wasn’t the type to send someone to their death right after saving them.
That would simply be stupid.
Seira’s turbulent heart was finally able to temporarily relax.
Without hesitation, she dashed forward alongside the others, taking the initiative to carry David while Siegfried grabbed Harry.
The cohort blurred through the battlefield, seamlessly switching positions with the Soulless Heroes in one swift and decisive charge.
Now, they stood between Dweezel and his Hawklings on one side and the Soulless Heroes on the other.
They were through the hardest part, but they still had to pass through the immortal snake and his bastard sons to begin the operation.
Shye caught up with them fairly easily and led the charge.
The cohort stopped not a moment and directly charged at the Hawklings, who stood protectively in front of their sinister father.
Somehow, Primo had already healed all his wounds and reattached the limbs Shye had severed earlier, allowing the eldest Hawkling to fight at full strength once more.
It didn’t matter.
Shye was already charging at full speed, rotten mana wings unfurled behind him and jet-black armor covering his torso.
His attributes were drastically boosted, and, of course, none of the Hawklings—including Dweezel himself—could stand in his way.
Nonetheless, the sinister snake refused to surrender his position without gaining anything.
Just a hint of Shye Crowley’s motive was enough.
For that, he was willing to sacrifice one of his own sons.
It wasn’t as if he cared about anyone else—except Primo and Hathor, anyway.
“Fourteenth, stop him.” he sternly ordered.
Fourteenth Hawkling was instantly put on the spot, torn between obeying his father or saving his skin.
Stopping the charging Shye Crowley would be difficult—if not outright impossible—but he was unwilling to let this chance to impress his father slip away.
Little did he know, he was being fed to the tiger.
In the end, Fourteenth Hawkling decided to take his chances, bracing himself behind his trusty shield with a silent prayer to whatever gods he believed in, his feet firmly planted on the ground.
An enormous golden shield materialized in front of him as a thin, translucent golden aura enveloped his body.

He would have seemed untouchable—if only his opponent wasn’t Shye Crowley.
The poor Hawkling then braced for impact with gritted teeth.
Unfortunately, the next moment, the world suddenly turned black for him.
Fourteenth Hawkling was dead.
The combination of [Golden Fortress] and [Stoic] was a commendable attempt—but unfortunately, the latter sealed his fate.
[Stoic] prevented him from being knocked back, forcing his body to absorb the full brunt of Shye’s attack.
Even with its seventy-percent damage reduction, the sheer force was too much, causing his internal organs to rupture, which then became the reason for his body failing to endure.
Fourteenth died on the spot, vomiting blood and bits of flesh onto the ground, his eyes as empty as a Soulless Hero’s.
The Hawklings stared at their fallen brother in shock and horror, though none allowed it to show on their faces.
Weakness was incompetence, and incompetence had no place in the Hawkin Group—at least, not in their revered Lord Father’s eyes.
Even Primo trembled at the sight.
How the hell could a human be this strong?
Where was Shye drawing all this power from when it was clear he wasn’t under the effects of soul enhancement?
None of them knew, but none of them were too interested in finding out, as doing so was probably equivalent to courting death.
Dweezel’s eyes narrowed.
From how ferociously Shye fought for the spot in front of the Black Dragon Gate, it seemed that the meddlesome bastard and his little cohort had a way to bypass the Soul Barrier.
He didn’t know how the brats would pull it off, but he was certain that they would.
‘But how would such stupidity matter?’ he thought, sneering inwardly.
So what if they managed to enter?
It wasn’t as though he couldn’t unlock the gate and flood the inside with his Soulless Heroes, his sons, and himself.
While the sinister snake was frustrated that the Eight Spirit Kings weren’t overwhelming the two equines, at the very least, they were keeping the couple occupied—preventing them from aiding Shye Crowley and his cohort.
Moreover, three whole minutes had passed.
The brats didn’t have much time left to work with.
‘Do these idiots think that unsealing the Black Dragon is instantaneous? Or do they have a plan to stall me and my subordinates for a full five minutes?’
Dweezel didn’t know, nor did he have time to ponder. The cohort had already almost secured the Black Dragon Gate.
‘Fine then, brat. I shall allow you to do as you please.’
The sinister snake was confident—he knew the Black Dragon Gate better than these snot-nosed brats ever could.
There was no way they could alter the barrier in a way he couldn’t counter.
After all, he and his now-perfect beloved were the ones who created it.
Shye and the others finally arrived at the Black Dragon Gate, forming a defensive line before it—facing Dweezel, his bastards, and his Soulless.
Well…a few of his Soulless…as the others were already slain and forty of them were currently ganging up on one poor shielder on the verge of faltering.
Luna was cornered in the crystalline hall, desperately hiding behind her shield and a flurry of defensive skills.
But despite her efforts, it was only a matter of time before she ran out—leaving her with nothing but the certainty of death.
Nonetheless, she held on without a hint of fear.
She wouldn’t die; her commander and friend said she wouldn’t.
Shye naturally wouldn’t betray her trust.
Soon after loosely regrouping in front of the Black Dragon Gate—maintaining enough distance to avoid being bombarded by area-of-effect spells while preserving mobility and proper distancing to dodge around and assist their comrades if needed—Shye locked gazes with Ian.
The two then nodded at each other.
It was time to make true to their promise.
