Chapter 950: Battle of the Black Dragon Gate (4)
Luna was not only an essential part but was the core of their defensive formation.
She couldn’t be the first to fall, or the entire plan would collapse.
As the two had agreed earlier, Ian slammed his palm onto the crystalline floor, leaving behind a black rune at the center of a shadowy magic circle.
Shye then quickly grabbed his friend and vice commander by his cloak, decisively hurling him the next moment toward Luna’s location.
Ian tore through the air at mind-blowing speed.
If not for his… similarly frequent experiences in the past, he would have struggled to retrieve Luna.
He focused his gaze on his target, despite his mouth hanging comically open.
Then, with immaculate precision, Ian hurled a shadow chain at the struggling shielder, latching securely onto her shadow.
Luna’s final defensive skill broke right at that moment, causing her to vomit blood once more due to the numerous backlashes she had to endure.
She was right back at her deadly condition before Shye healed her.
However, right before any other Soulless Hero could attack her vulnerable figure, the world abruptly turned black.
Luna was embraced by the shadows.
The next thing she knew, she was staggering behind the cohort’s small yet strangely reassuring defensive line, atop a black magic circle.
The shadowy rune was nowhere to be found, consumed as Ian activated [Shadow Return].
It was a neat life-saving combo of skills.
Suddenly finding herself in the safest place in the dangerous crystalline hall infested with their enemies and a certain sinister snake, Luna almost collapsed.
But then, divine lights descended upon the battered shielder, utterly confusing her.
They had no healers…
She didn’t have to think for long, as the answer of who healed her was revealed just the next moment.
“Harry, David, Go!” Shye exclaimed, standing his ground at the very forefront of the cohort’s defensive formation.
Without even answering, the two mages bolted towards the Soul Barrier, and for a moment, it disappeared, granting the two mages entry before returning to its activated state.
A figure then used [Blink] to appear in front of Shye from the enemy lines.
Wendy Primrose of the Immortal Radiance was finally back in the loving company of her beloved friends and comrades.
Shye naturally allowed her to pass him and quickly join the ranks, positioning her in the middle of the formation, where she was most protected.
“Excellent job, Wendy. Hahaha! Who knew this cunning old snake would be deceived by you? So much for being a pure priestess… Aren’t you simply the best stage performer? You could be the star of a renowned performance troupe, you know?” Shye joked, generously commending his friend for her exemplary performance.
“I just did what had to be done. It’s his fault for being…unintelligent.” Wendy replied, assuming a combat position.
Dweezel fell for everything—hook, line, and sinker.
The sinister snake was left dumbfounded for a few moments before endless grief and rage consumed his heart as he realized what had truly happened.
His beloved Aeryth was… merely a performance?

W-Where was his beloved Aeryth? Where was her soul?
Dweezel, of course, knew exactly where his beloved Aeryth Whitemane’s soul was, it was just that he didn’t want to accept it.
His dearest had become nourishment for Wendy Primrose, increasing the cunning brat’s abilities by leaps and bounds.
“Wendy Primrose!!” he roared in utter fury, catching even his bastard sons off guard. “I will capture your soul and torture it for eternity, mark my words…”
They had never seen their revered Lord Father lose composure to this degree.
Most of them had seen him displeased and disappointed but never furious to this extent.
Naturally, Wendy, who knew the extent of the rather immoral bamboozlement she had done, felt a bit guilty and scared.
She wasn’t used to being on the receiving end of such a pure form of sheer hatred.
The ruthless threats the old snake hurled at her also made her feel uneasy. After all, what if she was indeed captured?
No one wanted to be tortured for eternity! Not her, at least.
And so, the priestess shuddered slightly, swallowing in nervousness.
Ian noticed and gave her a reassuring pat on the back.
“Hmph! If that old snake were truly invincible, he wouldn’t have been deceived by you in the first place, would he? Don’t worry—we won’t let him capture you. We’ll succeed and get out of this alive. Also, look ahead. Isn’t Shye right there? That darned monster is simply unbeatable! How could Dweezel ever get to you?”
Of course, Wendy smiled at her friend’s encouragement.
Indeed.
She wasn’t alone like she had been in dangerous enemy territory over the past year. Now, she had allies who would cover for her—so what was there to fear?
Unfortunately, their wholesome moment was destined to be short-lived.
The furious Dweezel Hawkins soon took charge, leading the Soulless Heroes and the ten remaining Hawklings himself to attack the cohort’s defensive formation—risking his life as an alarming realization dawned upon him.
Unsealing the Black Dragon of Destruction wasn’t instantaneous.
But neither was unsealing the Soul Barrier without Aeryth—or rather, Wendy—doing it for him.
She was the barrier’s key, after all.
How could he have been so stupid? He already knew he shouldn’t have trusted anyone but himself, and yet, when it came to Aeryth Whitemane, he lost all sense of logic.
He had thought that by relegating a few tasks to her, despite her condition, he could convince himself that they were truly kings and queens—a match made in heaven.
In the end, the wench had merely been pretending to be his beloved.
And the real Aeryth was lost forever. She couldn’t even find solace in death.
However, not because of him…it was all because of Wendy Primrose!
Due to this infuriating oversight, Dweezel now had to act quickly.
He needed to slaughter Shye and his cohort, capture Wendy Primrose, and force her to unlock the barrier or begin unsealing it himself using various methods of soul arts—a process that would take at least a minute and a half.
Or he could also destroy it through brute force, though such a thing couldn’t be accomplished by mere humans like them.
After that, he would have to interrupt the two bastards performing the unsealing ritual inside the Black Dragon Gate.
