Chapter 952: Battle of the Black Dragon Gate (6)
“Everyone, retreat to the barrier! Support Harry and David! Wendy, support me from inside!” Shye roared as he fired two silver slash marks toward the Soulless Heroes, forcing them to dodge to the side.
He then drew his twin elemental staffs, unleashing a barrage of firebombs and ice shards.
Crystal fragments scattered through the air as his spells were blocked, swatted aside, or narrowly dodged.
Despite their efforts, they unfortunately could only hold on for a minute—forty whole seconds behind schedule.
Shye’s plan was simple—hold the entire enemy line by himself.
That way, he wouldn’t have to worry about anyone else and could rampage freely.
Shye knew all too well that he, too, could only last a certain amount of time.
He was strong, but he wasn’t delusional.
This was the only way to protect his comrades—buying them a few precious seconds to recover their stamina, replenish their mana, and tend to their wounds.
After that, they could assist him again.
The key was to delay Dweezel from touching and performing rituals on the Soul Barrier as much as possible.
If the bastard got his hands on it, Shye had no idea how long it would take for him to dismantle it completely.
If the barrier fell too soon, their entire plan would collapse.
They would have no choice but to retreat. If retreat was even an option, that is.
Glancing back, Shye saw that most of his comrades had already retreated inside the gate. Only Luna, Shirley, and Siegfried remained, fending off a few lingering enemies before falling back.
Shye quickly stepped back and helped them.
Wendy had to be careful when deactivating the barrier—if she mistimed it, the enemies could slip through and disrupt Harry and David’s unsealing ritual.
Fortunately, nothing went wrong.
The rest retreated safely behind the protective confines of the Soul Barrier.
At the far end of the vast hall yawned an abyss—an unsettling chasm oozing black energy.
In front of it, Harry and David knelt, channeling mana into the scroll, their figures eerily resembling members of some unholy cult.
Ian quickly scanned his eyes over everyone, counting whether everyone was already inside.
And everyone was…
Except for Shye, of course, as he was still outside.
With twin greatswords in hand, Shye fought—fiercely and relentlessly. Now alone, he held the full attention of the enemy.
His skillful footwork and masterful swordsmanship were on full display as he deflected fireballs, dodged lightning strikes and ice shards, cleaved wind cutters in half, and defended himself against swords, daggers, and other weapons.
Needless to say, no matter how hard he fought, it was impossible for him to be unscathed.
Most of his injuries came from sneaky elemental arrows.
The Soulless Heroes were mindless, yet their instincts had never been sharper. Their timing was so precise that Shye barely had a chance to react.
If not for his tough skin, his heart would have been pierced multiple times already.

Luckily, he was still alive, but he was barely holding on.
The last straw that broke the camel’s back was when Dweezel finally attacked.
The bastard knew well that Shye had been targeting him from the beginning, and so hid well, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Now was that moment.
Emerging from the shadows, the cautious snake silently slashed his dagger towards Shye’s neck, aiming to slit his throat.
Dweezel, too, was targeting the head of the enemy.
Once Shye fell, the cohort would fall easily.
Only ten seconds had passed and Shye was already in deep trouble.
He almost didn’t notice the ghostly dagger clad in an eerily silent dark aura.
Luckily, he did at the last moment, allowing him to activate [Stoic].
To his horror, the blade easily pierced through the thin golden coating, causing scarlet blood to fountain and splatter on the crystalline floor.
He almost died.
Had Shye not tilted his head in time, half his neck would have been slashed open, leaving him teetering on the edge of the afterlife.
Still, he was gravely wounded. And the blades and projectiles kept coming.
‘Damn snake!’ he cursed inwardly, pressing a hand against his wound while using the other to defend himself with his black shield. It had a gaping hole in the middle, but it would have to do.
‘High Heal!’
It didn’t work, perhaps still on cooldown.
He had to settle for a regular [Heal].
It didn’t stop the bleeding, but it was enough—for now.
The wound remained, but it was shallower than before, buying him precious seconds to fight on.
Bracing behind his shield for the incoming projectiles, Shye once again sensed danger from his left.
This time, golden rapier lights streaked toward him, aiming to take his life.
He barely evaded in time with a quick sidestep—but how much longer could he keep this up? The space he had to maneuver was shrinking, and he was gradually being cornered in front of the gate.
Then, Dweezel struck again, appearing out of nowhere and aiming a stab at his spine.
But this time, Wendy’s skills were off cooldown.
A thick, fifteen-layer barrier materialized behind him, intercepting Dweezel’s spectral dagger just in time—though ten layers shattered instantly from a single lethal stab.
It was an outrageous display of power for a class that prioritized speed over strength.
Shye wasn’t fazed, however, and he even hoped that Dweezel would immediately do it again, so he could slash the bastard in two or three chunks of flesh and bones.
Unfortunately, the bastard was extremely cunning.
Dweezel would never take the frontlines now that he wasn’t a warrior.
While this cautious nature worked in Shye’s favor in a way that he wouldn’t be instantly overwhelmed, this also ensured that his fall was only a matter of time.
In the next five seconds, Shye fought off the Hawklings and Soulless Heroes, managing to take down two of them.
But in his current state, it meant little.
Against a mighty opponent, humans—despite having an overwhelming number advantage—would usually hesitate, each unwilling to die for the glory of others.
But that logic didn’t apply here.
The Soulless Heroes were nothing more than relentless murder machines.
By the twenty-second mark, Shye was huffing and puffing, his stamina burning away like twigs in a roaring campfire.
His body was riddled with wounds of varying severity—minor to deep cuts, short and long lacerations, stab wounds, burns, and more.
And this was despite Wendy’s constant healing and barrier spells.
The sheer number of peak-level enemies was simply too overwhelming.
Things weren’t looking too good.
