Chapter 953: Battle of the Black Dragon Gate (7)
Shye had already stalled for half the time he needed for his plan to progress.
Though it seemed unlikely he could hold out for another full twenty seconds, a new plan was already forming in his mind.
Of course, retreating behind the Soul Barrier wasn’t as simple as it seemed.
The two equines were still locked in battle above, clashing with the Spirit Kings.
Both sides were battered and bruised.
Regal, the Zephyr Peafowl King in particular, had been caught by a wisp of Zeth’s scorching blue flame.
Half his body was burned, forcing him out of the fight for a good while.
Realizing that he didn’t need to create opportunities for the equines, Shye ordered his familiar through telepathy: ‘Zeth, retreat with Aemorus to the other side of the barrier!’
The Duchess of the Dusk was reluctant, but an order was an order.
She couldn’t defy Shye.
Her revenge would have to wait… for now.
Besides, upon noticing her master’s condition, she realized he, too, would be retreating soon.
And if he did, the Spirit Kings wouldn’t be their only enemies.
Zeth and Aemorus quickly retreated the next moment, temporarily ignoring the mocking taunts of their delusionally victorious opponents.
With the two equines now safe, Shye wasted no time following suit, fending off Primo, several Hawklings, and a few Soulless Heroes as he made his slow retreat.
Soon, he was defending right in front of the gate.
…Calculating…
The perfect moment arrived, and Wendy deactivated the barrier for a split second.
However, this time, things weren’t so perfect.
Four Soulless Heroes—and one rather foolish Hawkling—slipped inside.
“Hahahaha! You messed up, Shye Crowley. I have long waited for this moment. Now, I shall bring your head back as a trophy for my Lord Father!” Twentieth Hawkling, the youngest, cackled in triumph.
The young man then realized that Shye and his cohort were looking at him as though he was an idiot.
Twentieth looked around, paling the next moment.
Shye and his cohort weren’t trapped with him in there, he was…trapped in there with them!
As he realized his death loomed near a crippling fear washed over Twentieth’s entire being.
The young man quickly stepped back, taking cover behind the four Soulless Heroes. His mind raced for a solution, but panic was setting in—his thoughts beginning to blur.
Then came Shye’s cold command, the final straw that shattered his composure:
“Follow me and kill them.”
To Shye and the others’ surprise, two Soulless Heroes were already dead before they even arrived.
The remaining two fell swiftly—one by Shye, the other by Shirley.

And it was Twentieth who had killed the first two—effortlessly, at that, as the Soulless Heroes would never attack anyone from the Hawkin Group.
Now, the young man knelt before them, his face twisted in fear after his act of betrayal.
“L-Lord Crowley, p-please find it in your heart to forgive me! It was my father! H-He manipulated us all into doing his bidding! I never wanted this, please! Y-You have to believe me!”
Shye merely sneered in contempt at the younger man’s pathetic pleas.
He had sworn never to believe a single word from anyone carrying that cunning snake’s blood ever again.
“L-Lord Crowley!!! Plea–”
With a casual swing of his greatswords, the defenseless youngest Hawkling was beheaded.
Shye then ruthlessly kicked the severed head back to Primo, making the eldest bastard frown in a mix of disgust, displeasure, and anger.
He would’ve kicked it back to Dweezel, had the snake not been hiding in the shadows somewhere.
With one last middle finger of frustration and hatred, Shye shut the gate, fully expecting Dweezel to begin dismantling the barrier immediately.
He quickly glanced at Harry and the others, still channeling mana into the scroll.
They looked like their mana reserves could hold out for another minute.
Shye had no way of knowing how difficult—or easy—it would be for that sinister snake to dismantle the barrier.
But one thing was certain: he would do everything in his power to stop the bastard, just as determined as the bastard was to disrupt their unsealing ritual.
After checking on his comrades, Shye quickly retrieved several potions from the system’s inventory—stamina potions, mana recovery elixirs, and, most importantly, a large supply of health potions.
Wendy, extraordinary as she was, was only one person.
With her healing skills on cooldown, she couldn’t tend to everyone at once.
Meanwhile, Shye activated his [Mana Pulse], sensing whatever was happening to the other side of the gate through it.
If Dweezel began attempting to dismantle the barrier, he would know.
It was strangely peaceful for now.
‘Maybe they’re still preparing on the other side…’ he thought, pulling out his mana communicator.
Still no word from Sanada.
On the bright side, the battle outside seemed to be turning in their favor—though his dragon army and Nookie’s Corpse Army were apparently now locked in combat with the White Dragon of Creation.
Shye couldn’t help but worry about his subordinates’ well-being.
But right now, he was barely surviving himself.
He had no right to be concerned about others when he was hanging by a thread.
Losses were inevitable in war.
‘Focus…Focus…’ He took a deep breath.
Gulping down a few potions, Shye found it strange that nothing was still happening to the barrier.
It had been ten seconds already…
They were now only three minutes and a half towards victory, and yet, Dweezel hadn’t made a move.
The ten seconds he spent here was way different than the ten seconds he spent outside the gate.
If that sinister snake hadn’t given him a moment to breathe before, why would the bastard start now?
‘What is that sick geezer sche–’
His thoughts came to a screeching halt as he noticed Wendy standing alone, a few meters from Shirley.
Alarm bells rang in his head and he quickly stood up and sprinted toward the priestess
“WENDY!! BARRIER ON YOURSELF, NOW!!”
The next moment, a figure emerged from the shadows, reaching out with filthy hands toward Wendy’s fair skin.
