Chapter 278: Maverick Windesburg’s Insanity
Maverick Windesburg was well aware of how powerful it was now. Even, due to the rules of the game world, his true power was suppressed.
Otherwise, his true power was just below the weakest Outer God as he was someone who had achieved immortality.
All of his dark magic experiments were held in order to have a glimpse of immortality. It just so happened that his experiments weren’t all in vain and he finally achieved it a hundred years ago.
Furthermore, Maverick was a Special NPC so he knew some secrets that aren’t known to the average NPC. For example, he recognized Weiss as the God of Games Aspro.
“To be honest, I’m quite confident that I’m stronger than Aspro if it’s the power in the real world. My true power can already destroy multiple worlds and if I were to prepare well enough, even destroying a miniature galaxy is possible.”
“But that also goes to show how powerful Aspro’s backing is. He might not be powerful in the real world, but the Game Developer Authority he used to create someone as powerful as I just spoke of how powerful his backing is.”
“Even Outer Gods that could destroy universes were created by Aspro’s power. An entire universe was also created by him so he is invincible in the game world.”
“If it were a fair fight in the real world, I’d win against Aspro. But I highly doubt my power will work against him since his authority as The Creator might prevent my attacks from inflicting damage on him.”
The more Maverick had become stronger, the more his horizons had widened.
Even though Aspro was weaker than him in the real world, that didn’t prevent Maverick from fearing him. In fact, he knew that no matter how much he did, he would always be inferior to Aspro in terms of power since that was his limit as his creation.
As a two-dimensional creature, even if he became three-dimensional after traveling to the real world, his origin was still two-dimensional in essence. His limit lay in Aspro’s limit.
Even if he were to fulfill his role and have the chance to travel to the real world, Maverick doubted whether his power could surpass Aspro since at most, he might only be allowed to bring power that was equal to Aspro’s power in the real world.
However, that didn’t prevent Maverick from having the desire to leave the game world since he knew that he had no future in this game.
If he wasn’t a Special NPC and wasn’t aware of this reality being a game world, he might be the same as the hotel staff and the rest of the inhabitants of this world who believed that this world was real.
But as a Special NPC like his granddaughter, Maverick felt like a bird trapped in this damn cage.
“I can’t delude myself and live in the delusion that everything in this world isn’t a game. Even if this feels real, it’s all considered as a game by the players.”
“I don’t want to remain as a chess piece but become one of the chess players.”
“From what I heard, usurping The Creator might allow me to obtain The Creator’s power, but which madman would dare do that? Even if I have slaughtered countless lives for my dark magic experiments, that’s because I want to achieve immortality. It’s also due to the game setting up that background for me.”
“The Creator is The Creator and he is always above his creations. Unless I have assistance from a third party, I can’t usurp him. And even that third party would only use me as a disposable chess piece so it’s better to just be honest and not affect the life of my creator.”
“In the end, I exist solely because The Creator willed it. If The Creator wanted to end my existence, I would be powerless to resist. Even the powerful Outer Gods in this game world cannot oppose The Creator, let alone someone like myself.”
Despite reaching a power level second only to the Outer Gods, Maverick remained grounded.
According to the game’s lore, he was introduced as a dark mage who had sacrificed countless lives and tormented numerous souls in his quest for immortality. The lore depicted him as a madman and a psychopath, driven to insanity.
However, Maverick Windesburg had a different perspective on true insanity.
For him, true insanity was the relentless plunge into madness while still retaining one’s sanity.
To Maverick, becoming a madman and losing sanity was not true insanity but merely an escape from it.
Becoming a madman and losing sanity—letting the body be controlled by one’s instinct…
If not a beast driven by animal instinct, then what?
“It won’t be long before the players led by The Creator’s sister arrive at my lair. According to my role, I still have to fight the players even if it costs me my death. Well, I won’t truly die since the game will reset after the game is completed and I’ll be able to retain my memories.”
“For now, I’ll just wait for them while preparing for the next game scenario.”

Unbeknownst to Ayame and her team, Maverick Windesburg was already awaiting their arrival and even his own death.
Even if it was the average player and not a team led by The Creator’s sister, Maverick’s role fulfillment still required him to die at the hands of the players.
Whether Maverick liked it or not, he had to die at the hands of the players and meet other conditions before he could fulfill his role and have a chance to travel to the real world.
Ayame and her team had already left the Phantom Library and were currently sleeping.
