Chapter 34: The Lonely Swordsman
A lonely swordsman was walking in a ruined city. Countless buildings were in ruins while zombies flooded and destroyed everything in its path.
An A-rank zombie led those zombies to destroy everything in its path. After successfully evolving, the A-rank zombie whose sentience was comparable to that of a human had developed greed for power.
Destroying every building in its path was to destroy the hiding locations of humans. The A-rank zombie who identified himself as “Jonathan” had planned to slaughter and devour any humans in its path.
Jonathan wanted to evolve to S-rank and his plan was to devour every living being in this world. After devouring all humans, he planned to devour those plants and animals that had evolved into zombies. If that wasn’t enough, he would also cannibalize those zombies.
Jonathan believed that his method of becoming an S-rank zombie was foolproof. After all, with the accumulation of all the zombie viruses from those awakeners, mutated plants, and mutated animals, Jonathan speculated that reaching S-rank was a huge possibility.
But when Jonathan was about to lead his zombie army to destroy another street, Jonathan saw a human wearing simple civilian attire. However, the sheathed longsword placed on the human’s waist was emanating the power of a B-rank special event item.
The lonely swordsman saw Jonathan and his eyes lit up and he murmured, “Finally, an A-rank zombie.”
Although the lonely swordsman was only at B-rank, Jonathan felt threatened by the power he felt from the lonely swordsman.
‘This human seems to be infinitely close to A-rank. He only needs an A-rank evolution crystal and his evolution to A-rank is guaranteed.’
‘Furthermore, that human has an artifact while I don’t have any.’
As a zombie, Jonathan was unlike those players who referred to those powerful items as “special event items”.
For Jonathan and the rest of the normal NPCs, those special event items were called “artifacts”.
Jonathan knew that peak B-rank awakener wielding a B-rank artifact could pose a threat to an A-rank like him.
Furthermore, Jonathan had just recently evolved to A-rank so he was only at the initial stage of A-rank. Otherwise, if his power had reached the intermediate stage or the late stage of A-rank, he wouldn’t be threatened by a mere peak B-rank awakener.
The lonely swordsman was also aware of that. Because of that reason, he wanted to grasp this opportunity of killing a relatively weak A-rank zombie so that he could become an A-rank awakener.
Knowing that he couldn’t avoid this battle, Jonathan was the first to make a move as he ordered his zombies, “Kill him!”
Although some zombies under Jonathan had also developed sentience and could think and talk like normal humans, they still didn’t disobey Jonathan’s command.
Most zombies would follow the law of the jungle and would follow anyone stronger than them. Since Jonathan was stronger than them, they followed Jonathan’s command, and like a flood, they charged towards the lonely swordsman, destroying anything in its path.
Most zombies under Jonathan had awakened their ability so they used it against the lonely swordsman.
Countless elemental attacks bombarded the lonely swordsman from all sides but the lonely swordsman remained unfazed from it.
Holding the hilt of his sword, the lonely swordsman didn’t unsheathe it yet but chanted, “I am alone in this world. My friends had already left me. Walking the path of the strongest, my sword will become my only companion!”
“Third Form: Thirty-Six Wind Blades!”
In that one moment the lonely swordsman unsheathed his sword, the lonely swordsman seemed to have slashed his sword thirty-six times in all directions.
Whether it was the elemental attacks launched by those zombies or the zombies themselves, they were all cut into several pieces by wind blades until they were cut into pieces that couldn’t be seen by the naked eye.
Everything was cut into pieces around the lonely swordsman except for Jonathan who had anticipated the lonely swordsman’s attack.
Since the thirty-six wind blades were distributed throughout all directions and weren’t concentrated toward him, Jonathan successfully blocked the lonely swordsman’s attack with his earth wall and earth armor.
The wind blades had destroyed his earth wall but when it landed on the earth armor, only some small dents were formed on it, indicating the durable defense of Jonathan’s earth armor.
The lonely swordsman wasn’t surprised that Jonathan could withstand his wind blades. However, the lonely swordsman didn’t waste any more time and attacked Jonathan after killing Jonathan’s subordinates.
Sheathing his sword, the lonely swordsman unsheathed it again and a powerful viral energy was released from the lonely swordsman’s body.
The powerful viral energy was concentrated towards his sword and as soon as it was unsheathed, the lonely swordsman yelled with vigor, “Ultimate Form: The Only Sword!”

The lonely swordsman’s sword drawing speed was faster than Jonathan’s reaction time.
Jonathan could only wrap his entire body with reinforced earth, sealing himself in a sphere made out of reinforced earth. He wasn’t given enough time to prepare for more defenses.
As soon as the lonely swordsman drew his sword from his sheathe, a wide yet invisible sword slash headed towards Jonathan!
The invisible sword slash cut the reinforced earth sphere into two halves from top to bottom. Along with it, Jonathan’s body was cut into two from his head to his lower body.
However, with Jonathan’s precise control over his sword and wind blade, he narrowly avoided the A-rank evolution crystal inside Jonathan’s brain.
Walking towards Jonathan’s corpse, Kodokuna Kenshi, the lonely swordsman, picked up the A-rank evolution crystal from Jonathan’s brain.
Afterward, he unsheathed his sword back to its scabbard and sighed, “I have already wandered in this city for a month and a week yet Inu and Sukamu haven’t been found yet. They must have already died since there are only 84 players left.”
“If they were one of those 84 survivors, they might have already become powerful and should have contacted me yet they didn’t.”
“As always, I am alone. But my sword will always accompany me.”
With a sigh of melancholy, Kodokuna Kenshi sat in a lotus position in the middle of the ruined city and absorbed the A-rank evolution crystal.
