Chapter 646: Emotional Creatures
After walking for more than fifteen minutes, Adam suddenly halted in his footsteps after sensing something in the periphery of his Sphere of Resonance.
“What is it?” Daneli, who was walking right behind him, asked in a hushed tone.
Adam turned around and glanced at the people behind him. “We have company.”
At once, Daneli, Liriel, and Kael turned solemn. Although they had already expected this, the fact that it was truly happening caused them to be slightly taken aback.
“Those bastards really are using these secret tunnels,” Liriel spoke somberly.
“We still can’t be sure if these guys are from the Red Fists,” Adam replied. “For now, we need to move to the center of the tunnel to avoid them. They seem to be using both footpaths.”
Daneli looked at the defiled and polluted waters flowing through the middle of the sewage and couldn’t help but complain in frustration, “Didn’t you say they won’t be able to see through this spell? Why do we need to go in there? Let’s just stick close to the walls!”
Adam rolled his eyes and ignored him. Then, he jumped into the filthy waters. Kael and Liriel followed soon after. Seeing that he was the only person to remain on the footpath, Daneli cursed loudly before jumping down.
The group of four Magi remained standing still in the central section of the tunnel. A few minutes later, the sound of footsteps and muffled conversations could be heard coming from the direction the group had just come from.
Liriel glanced in that direction with a serious look on her face. She then looked at Adam and stated, “There seems to be a lot of them. Could it really be the Red Fists transporting women through these tunnels?”
Adam had already sensed the group that was approaching them. Although he couldn’t directly see them, he could tell that they consisted of a few men and a large number of women.
“Liriel,” he looked at the silver-haired elf and solemnly stated, “No matter what happens, do not engage the enemy.”
Liriel deeply looked at Adam. She had a feeling that he already knew who was coming. In the end, she nodded her head with a complicated expression.
A few minutes passed as the group silently stood at the center of the tunnel. Then, several shadowy silhouettes appeared at the far end of the pathway. Now, their conversations could also be heard more clearly.
“…How long do I have to do this shitty job? Thought I was already due for a promotion.”
“What promotion? Just walking a few miles a day guarantees you a promotion? Haha, you wish it was really that easy, you stupid newbie.”
“Then what must I do to not do this kind of work? I swear I’ll do anything else.”
“Just shut your mouth and do as Boss Hardy instructs you!”
“…Why do you all keep calling him the Boss? Obviously, there’s someone higher than…”
“Shut your mouth, newbie! Watch the girls behind you. If any of them fall into the sewage waters, they’ll have our heads!”
A couple of men wearing simple clothes and leather armor led the group from the front. Behind them, dozens of young women wearing tattered clothes had thier hands and ankles tied in chains and were being escorted.
A few men were guarding them from the sides, and finally, about half a dozen men following right behind the group, armed to the teeth.
As this large group of people passed by Adam and the rest, none of them were able to sense their presence. Naturally, the Rank 1 Magus heading the group was unable to sense them as well.
Instead of looking at the prisoners being escorted, Adam looked at Liriel instead. She was seething with rage at the scene. Her hands clenched and unclenched several times as she grit her teeth. It felt as if she would pounce at the men taking the prisoners any moment.
Adam couldn’t help but feel yet another sense of deja vu. The same thing happened back when he and Elysande were following Alvertos and another spy of the Umbra Thieves through these same underground tunnels.
Women are such emotional creatures, he thought. Just when he was about to reach out for Liriel and ask her to calm down, he saw Kael put his hand on her shoulder.
“Not now, Liriel,” said Kael in a gentle voice as he slowly shook his head. “If we intervene now, all our planning will be for naught.”
He then lowered his hand from her shoulder and grabbed her hand, gently squeezing it. “I know how you feel. Be patient, our time will come.”
Adam and even Daneli were slightly taken aback by this scene. They shared a strange look with one another, both thinking the same thing—this was the first time they’d heard the man talk so much.
Liriel, on the other hand, lowered her head and took deep breaths. She then glanced at Kael and faintly smiled. “I understand.”

The black snake coiled around Adam’s neck suddenly called out to him in snaketongue, “Human, look at the red cloth tied around the arms of those men. I’ve seen men with the same red cloth traverse these tunnels in the last few days.”
“Yes.” Adam nodded. “They’re members of the Red Fists.” He then glanced at the snake and asked, “Did you find anyone else?”
“Yes, several Magi were accompanying these men. But none of them had that red band on. Most had Rank 1 strength, some had Rank 2 strength. There was even one human with the strength of Rank 3, but I didn’t dare go near him. He had a rotting smell about him,” explained the serpent.
Adam’s pupils constricted at this new information. “Why didn’t you tell me about the existence of the Mana Vortex Magus?” He reprimanded in a hushed voice.
The black snake looked at him and hissed, “You never asked!”
“What is it, Adam?” Daneli asked when he heard an angry hiss from him. Of course, he didn’t understand a word he was speaking, just that he was scolding the snake.
Adam massaged his temple in frustration as he glared at the snake, who didn’t seem to be bothered at all. He then looked at Daneli and the other two Magi, who were looking at him inquisitively and replied, “Uh, nothing. Let’s just visit the abandoned base and get out of here soon.”
He didn’t wish to tell them that there was a possibility that they’d encounter a Mana Vortex Magus in these tunnels. He didn’t want to worry them about what may or may not happen. If trouble arose, he would take care of it and make sure they escaped.
