Chapter 686: Sharp Refusal
Everyone turned their heads in the direction that Adam was pointing at. There, they saw a corpse with a gaping hole in its chest and a dagger shaped like a raven feather pierced through the side of its head.
Sensing the remnant mana fluctuations around the corpse, all the councilors instantly understood that the corpse belonged to a Rank 3 – Mana Vortex Magus!
Instantly, all of them arrived before the corpse with a thunderstruck look on their faces. The corpse belonged to a pale, middle-aged man with a receding hairline.
The face still displayed shock and horror. One could only imagine what he must’ve gone through at the time of death.
Ives Ballard was the first one to react. With eyes completely wide in shock, he blurted out, “This is a Mana Vortex Magus! Do you expect all of us to believe that you, a mere Mana Liquefaction Magus, killed this man? Do you take us for fools?!”
Adam simply ignored the man, continuing to drink from the gourd. However, this action of his caused Ives Ballard to become even more enraged.
He looked at all the councilors present and spoke furiously, “This boy is highly suspicious! Do all of you really think that he was able to kill a Mana Vortex Magus? Since when did Magi like us become so easy to kill? He’s lying! He’s definitely hiding something!”
Taron Norwood and Hammon McLeod shared Ives’ sentiments. They didn’t think that a Rank 2 Magus could possibly kill a Rank 3 Magus. This was simply unheard of.
Daneil Ranzenberg was stoic as ever, his thoughts and opinions a mystery. Nylian Feno had a conflicted expression on his face.
He knew that Adam was far stronger than any Rank 2 Magus he knew. But at the same time he had doubts about him being strong enough to kill a Rank 3 Magus.
Lastly, Sabrina Benton was thinking about something else entirely. She crouched down beside the corpse and grabbed a white skull that was hidden in the man’s robes.
As she examined the skull, she couldn’t help but exclaim, “An artifact from the School of Necromancy…”
She then turned to look at Adam, who was nonchalantly drinking wine, and asked in a grave tone, “This man… Was he from the Cult?”
Adam’s eyes flashed with a brilliance for a split second. This was the perfect opportunity to reveal the existence of the Cult of Bones and their plans in Ravenfell.
This would ensure that the city would be able to better equip itself in battling the evil organization in the future. Moreover, it would also make the Brotherhood’s job easier.
“Yes, Lady Benton.” Adam got to his feet and slowly walked toward the councilors.
He stood right beside Sabrina Benton. Then, with the wave of his hand the feather-shaped dagger lodged into Olin’s brain flew out and landed in Adam’s grip.
He then pressed the dagger against the black feather tattoo around his wrist, causing the dagger to disappear into it.
Adam purposely did this in front of everyone. He then looked at the old woman and stated, “I managed to get a few things out of him before I killed him.”
Sabrina Benton’s expression turned even more solemn. “Speak.”
Adam paused for a moment before stating, “He said he was from the Cult of Bones.”
The youth scanned the faces of all the councilors, closely monitoring their expressions and true emotions.
Then he continued while pointing at the skull in Sabrina Benton’s hand, “He also mentioned that he wanted to use that magical artifact during the Grand Magus Tournament. Said that it was given to him by the Cult Leader.”
“Ridiculous!!” Ives Ballard roared. He looked at all the councilors and spoke angrily, “How are you all still allowing this wicked brat to speak? Do you all seriously think he killed this man? Can you believe a word he says?”
Right at that moment, Sabrina Benton turned to look at Ives Ballard, her eyes spewing irritation and anger. “Councilor Ballard,” she spoke coldly.
“It is clear to me that you harbor hatred and resentment towards Magus Constantine for what he did to you at the Duskfall Estate,” she added, her voice authoritative.
“As such, whatever you say now about the young Magus must be taken with a grain of salt. Being a councilor, it is imperative that you see to the matters regarding the city with a clear and objective mind.
“However, since you are unable to do that at the moment, your presence is no longer required.”
Without waiting for the man to respond, she looked at the armoured Magi standing behind her and ordered, “Men, escort Councilor Ballard to his estate. He is tired and needs rest.”
“Benton, you…” Ives Ballard was greatly taken aback. He didn’t expect her of all people to side with Adam over him.

When he looked at the rest of his fellow councilors, he noticed that none of them had objected to what she said. His eyes narrowed and he was overcome by indignation in his heart.
He cast a cold gaze filled with hostility toward Adam before harrumphing in displeasure and leaving.
Seeing the annoying man leave, Adam couldn’t help but feel some satisfaction in his heart. He raised the wine gourd and took another swig. Now, left with only five other councilors, he answered all the questions they directed at him. He was quite cooperative.
In the end, Sabrina Benton flatly told him, “We need to verify your claims, Magus Constantine. Please, allow me to extract your memories of the battle.”
“I refuse!”
Sabrina Benton’s eyes narrowed. “I beg your pardon?”
“I said, I refuse!” Adam spoke firmly. He looked at all the councilors present and continued, “My battle with Olin Barrett involves several secrets that serve as my trump cards. Surely, you can understand where I’m coming from.”
Every Magus had a trump card, a closely guarded secret, something they acquired from a highly fortuitous encounter. It was natural for them to not reveal the existence of such a thing.
So when Adam came up with that excuse, it was understandable.
However, Sabrina Benton, the Lord Marshall of Ravenfell wasn’t making a request.
“Magus Adam Constantine, you will hand over your memories of the battle, or risk being interrogated by my men in the dungeon. The choice is yours.”
Adam’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Sabrina Benton.
She’s a lot more difficult to deal with than I had imagined, he thought.
However, it wasn’t as if he was out of options.
He stretched his bloodied hands and showed the raven-feathered tattos around his wrist to everyone present. “You see this, Councilor? This is the acknowledgment I received from the Headmaster of Saratoga himself.”
Sabrina Benton’s eyes narrowed as she had an inclination as to where this conversation was heading.
“Therefore,” Adam continued with a faint yet confident smile. “If you plan to comb through my memories, I would first need to inform the Headmaster himself. If he permits you, then sure, then sure, do whatever you want.”
His tone turned sly and he added, “Or do you think you can bypass the Headmaster’s authority?”
At once, Sabrina Benton was at a loss for words. After all, the Headmaster of Saratoga Castle was the Lord of Ravenfell. He was her master!
Seeing her not speak a word and simply stare at him coldly, Adam knew he had achieved what he wanted to. He pressed his hand against his chest and lightly bowed.
“If that will be all, I shall make my way to Saratoga since the city is not as safe as I’d imagined. It has been a long night and I’m very tired. Now, if you will excuse me.”
With that said, he turned around and slowly walked away. The following moment, a black winged panther suddenly appeared beside him. The youth got on top of the winged panther and flew towards Saratoga Castle.
Seeing Adam disappear into the night sky, Sabrina Benton couldn’t help but coldly mutter, “‘The city is not as safe as I’d imagined’? Impudent little brat!”
