Chapter 687: Bizarre Magic
East Wing, Saratoga Castle.
Adam slowly opened his groggy eyes, his gaze drawn to the familiar ceiling of his dorm room.
He stared at the ceiling in a daze, contemplating whether to get out of bed or sleep for some more time.
“Val,” he called out.
“What?” The young dragon, in his adorable cat-form, was sitting by the fireplace and making a pyramid out of gold coins.
“How long did I sleep?”
Valerian turned to look toward the bed and spoke after some thought, “A little more than two days, I think.”
“…I see.” It would appear that Adam had been truly exhausted during the events of the Duskfall Masquerade Ball.
That night, he had to constantly be on edge. From playing mind games with Altan Duskfall and Olin Barrett, to ultimately engaging in a physical battle and coming out victorious.
Furthermore, the explosion from the flesh golem had also severely injured him—more than he cared to admit. Even now, his whole body was aching from that explosive attack.
Then, there was also the brief battle that took place inside his spirit sea.
The youth lazily stretched under the thick blanket for a few moments and then asked, “Did anyone come to visit me?”
“No.” Valerian turned his attention back toward the gold pyramid. “A couple of owls came to drop letters, though.”
Adam sat up on the bed, glancing at his side table. There were a few sealed letters on it. Since it was delivered by owls, he figured the letters would be from people in the Brotherhood.
Before he began reading the letters, he glanced at Valerian and sincerely said with a smile, “Val, you did well that night.”
“Hmph! Of course, I did. I am a mighty dragon!” Although Valerian pretended to be haughty about the compliment, his gently swaying tail gave him away.
Seeing this, Adam couldn’t help but chuckle lightly. He then got up from the bed, grabbed all the letters, and walked toward his leather chair by the fireplace.
It was snowing outside and the weather was chilly. Although the outside temperature didn’t affect Adam because of his robust constitution, he still liked it when he sat by the fireplace, enjoying its warmth in the winter.
He let out a long and lazy yawn as he took his seat on the high-back chair. Then, he began reading the letters.
The first one was naturally by Daneli, shocked by the events that followed the masquerade ball. The elf didn’t know about Adam’s plan of dealing with the Rank 3 cultist.
Other than that, the elf mentioned the urgency of meeting him and the rest of the members of the Brotherhood in the city.
There was one piece of information at the bottom of the letter that caused Adam’s eyes to narrow.
‘Brigham Flynn has returned to Ravenfell.’
Adam’s eyes flashed with a dangerous light as he thought, That old bastard better have a good explanation for coming back to the city.
If he really is the traitor in our midst, I will make him wish he were dead!
He took a few deep breaths and calmed himself down. He threw Daneli’s letter in the fireplace and read the next letters.
They were from Liriel, Kael, and Elrick. All three of them expressed their concerns about his situation and wanted to rendezvous at the safehouse in the Blinder Neighborhood of Corvid Quarter.
Adam nonchalantly burned the letters after reading them. Only one letter remained. When he unsealed the envelope, he was surprised to see that the sender was none other than the Rank 3 – Mana Vortex Magus, Krummor Grimriver.
It was the dwarven Warden of the Brotherhood who had come to the city a few years ago, explaining to him about the various factions within the organization.
“Strange. Why did he send me a letter?” He muttered under his breath.

When he read the contents of the letter, his eyebrows rose in surprise, and he couldn’t help but grin, “About damn time!”
The content of the letter was simple.
The Twilight Brotherhood had finally divined the hidden stronghold of the Umbra Thieves!
Adam got up from his chair and got dressed. “Val, put away those gold coins before I take them away. We’re going to Ravenfell.”
“Grrr!” Valerian growled threateningly and hurriedly put away his gold coins.
Then, he leaped onto Adam’s shoulder, and together they left the dorm room.
…
At the same time, in another part of the castle, Sabrina Benton climbed the mysterious staircases that led to unexpected locations.
The staircases were infused with magic so bizarre that if a person were to climb the stairs to reach their destination on the upper floors, they would learn that they, in fact, had arrived at one of the lower floors instead.
The only way to navigate these stairs was to follow one’s instincts.
As Sabrina Benton climbed these stairs, her eyes flashed with reminiscence, recalling the days when she and her friends would take these stairs and get lost in the castle.
The bizarre stairs were the number one reason why students in the castle would be late for classes.
Thinking of those days that seemed like a lifetime ago, Sabrina Benton couldn’t help but shake her head with a faint smile.
Time flies, she thought.
After navigating the magical staircase for a few minutes, going up when she wanted to go down, going down when she wanted to climb high, she finally arrived at her destination.
It was the highest point in the castle and was a highly restricted area. Only a few professors were allowed to visit this place.
The office of the Headmaster!
Standing before the towering oak doors, Sabrina felt like she had once again returned to her days as a student. She took a deep breath and reached out to knock on the doors.
However, before her knuckles could even tap on the surface, the doors had already opened.
Sabrina Benton awkwardly lowered her hand and walked inside.
It was a grand and enigmatic place, filled with the air of mystery and magic. The room was circular with high arched windows that allowed natural light to filter through.
The walls were lined with wooden shelves filled with ancient books, strange apparatuses, magical artifacts, and vintage items that were hundreds of years old.
At the center of the room stood a massive desk made of oak. It was covered with parchment papers, quills, books, and old trinkets.
Sabrina Benton’s gaze landed on the mysterious old man with long white hair and an equally long beard of the same color reading a thick, ancient book while smoking from his long pipe.
Without looking up, Headmaster Blackwoord succinctly stated, “Sit.”
Sabrina Benton obediently did as told. She didn’t even dare to speak in the presence of the Lord of Ravenfell.
Headmaster Blackwood shut the thick book he was reading and place it aside. His dark and deep eyes shifted to Lord Marshall of Ravenfell and he spoke with a light shake of his head.
“Sabrina, you’ve disappointed me.”
