Chapter 689: Like the Wind
Sabrina Benton found herself at a loss for words.
Acknowledgment from the First Headmaster? But how can that be possible?, she thought.
Suddenly, she recalled something that she’d only heard rumors about. Almost every student at Saratoga knew that there were inheritances left behind the alumni within the very walls of this castle.
Out of all these inheritances, the most well-known and legendary were the Raven Inheritances. They were said to be left behind by the founder of Saratoga Castle himself.
However, since none had come across it, everyone thought they were just myths propagated to glorify the legend of the first Headmaster.
But Sabrina Benton knew that they weren’t mere myths. Raven Inheritances were real and one of its recipients was sitting right before her!
“My Lord, you don’t mean to say that… Adam also came across a Raven Inheritance, do you?” She couldn’t help but ask in disbelief.
Headmaster Blackwood exhaled a cloud of smoke towards the ceiling and watched it turn into foggy ravens that circled the office playfully.
He then looked at Sabrina and casually mentioned, “He didn’t just come across the Raven Inheritance, he even passed all of its trials.”
Sabrina Benton was stunned. “Passed all of its trials… Incredible!”
She had heard from people who knew that the trials within the Raven Inheritances were extremely difficult.
For example, if a hundred people chanced upon the entrance to one of these inheritances, only one would make it to the final trial. Moreover, it still wasn’t a guarantee that they would pass it.
This was an inheritance left behind the famed Night Magus, Dendar Saratoga. How could it be so easy to pass its trials?
But there was one thing that Sabrina couldn’t understand. “My Lord, please enlighten me, how did Adam gain the acknowledgment of the First Headmaster?”
Headmaster Blackwood patiently explained, “The Raven Inheritances are all administered by the remnant will left behind by the First Headmaster. Those who complete the final trial of the inheritance receive the honor of meeting him—or rather, his remnant will.”
Sabrina Benton nodded in understanding. “I see, so that’s what he meant…”
“You can rest assured, those who have completed all the trials of the Raven Inheritances will have the best interest of Saratoga Castle in their hearts,” Headmaster Blackwood added.
“How so, my lord?” Sabrina asked curiously.
“You see, Sabrina,” Said the Headmaster as he took yet another puff from the pipe. “The Raven Inheritance doesn’t just test your skill and understanding in magic, but it also tests your character.
“It unearths the deepest recesses of your heart and unravels your true nature. If the one participating in the inheritance was of decent temperament and had most, if not all the qualities that the First Headmaster was looking for, then they would be acknowledged by him.”
Sabrina went into deep thought and couldn’t help but ask, “But what if the person passed all the trials, but it was found that they had a wicked and amoral character? Would they still receive the rewards?”
Headmaster Blackwood’s lips curled into a smirk, “Do you know why the First Headmaster was known as the Night Magus?”
Sabrina Benton shook her head.
“It is because the night is full of terrors,” answered Headmaster Blackwood.
“If the First Headmaster found even the slightest possibility that the person participating in the inheritance would one day bring harm upon the castle, he would make sure that the person never left the inheritance ground.”
“…I see.” Sabrina Benton nodded.
“That is why, historically, only those who have successfully passed all the trials of the Raven Inheritance are considered as candidates for the Headmaster position,” said the old man.
“Through these Raven Inheritances, the First Headmaster ensured that the one to inherit his legacy—or at least part of it—was a person with decent moral standards. Only such a person was suitable to carry on his legacy.”
Hearing the underlying meaning in the Headmaster’s words, Sabrina Benton couldn’t help but be taken aback once again.
“My Lord, are you suggesting that Adam could be the next Headmaster of Saratoga Castle?!”

Headmaster Blackwoord couldn’t help but chuckle lightly, “Sabrina, did you know that Adam will be 34 years old this year?”
“I was unaware,” Sabrina Benton politely answered, not knowing why the Headmaster would suddenly ask her that.
But his next words caused her to receive the greatest shock that she’d received since entering his office—or perhaps, in all her life.
“And he’s already at the cusp of breaking through to the Mana Vortex Rank.”
“What?!” Sabrina nearly shot up from her chair. She coon composed herself, “Forgive my burst of emotions, my lord. But… how can the boy already reach that stage? Are you certain?”
“Yes.” Headmaster Blackwood nodded. “The only reason he hasn’t taken the next step yet is because of the Grand Magus Tournament. He has sealed his mana channels around the area where the energy vortex will eventually form. I suspect he’s also paused practicing mindfulness.”
Sabrina Benton was so stunned that she couldn’t even find the right words to speak. The speed at which Adam had progressed left her in disbelief.
“How… can this even be possible?”
“It’s because his understanding of magic is profoundly deep,” Headmaster Blackwood spoke with certainty.
Perhaps deeper than even mine, he thought.
“Can it have such an effect on a person’s progress in the arcane path?” Sabrina Benton still refused to believe it. It was simply too shocking.
Headmaster Blackwood gently smiled, “It’s like digging a well, Sabrina. Someone who understands where to dig will find water quickly, while someone without knowledge will keep digging in the wrong places and get nowhere.”
“So will you be grooming him to become the Headmaster after you?” Sabrina asked after a long pause.
“I’m afraid not,” Headmaster Blackwood chuckled lightly. “That boy… He’s someone who will always chase the horizon, never meant to be bound.”
He changed subjects and asked instead, “You mentioned him being a part of some secret organization?”
“It is my speculation, yes.” Sabrina Benton nodded.
“Although I highly doubt that he would bring harm to Saratoga Castle or Ravenfell,” the Headmaster began.
“If you still feel uneasy about it, how about recruiting him into one of the forces serving under you? That way, you can keep a close watch on him while also teaching him a thing or two about warfare.”
Sabrina thought for a moment before readily agreeing, “Excellent idea, my lord. I will do as you say.” With that said, she rose to her feet, respectfully bowed and prepared to leave.
“Oh, and Sabrina,” Headmaster Blackwood called out.
“Yes, my lord?”
The old man leaned in his chair and enjoyed the burning tobacco in his pipe. “Don’t be too rigid with him. Some men are like the wind—they learn best when given room to roam.”
Sabrina Benton nodded, a faint smile forming on her lips. “Understood, my lord.”
