Chapter 699: Black Bastion
The Black Bastion stood at the heart of Ravenfell’s Downtown District, just a short distance from Council Keep.
It was the stronghold of the Black Legion, an imposing fortress that served as both a symbol of the city’s elite might, and a silent warning to all its enemies.
The day following the grand feast, Adam arrived at this fortress on horseback. He noticed that it was built atop a raised plateau of black stone. Its towering obsidian walls proudly displayed the banners of the Black Legion.
“Not bad,” Adam muttered under his breath as he directed his steed to proceed to the towering black-iron gates.
“We greet the Lord Commander!” The guards stationed at the gate loudly and respectfully greeted the youth.
Adam nodded at them, waiting for them to open the gates.
Upon entering through the outer walls of the fortress, he arrived before a vast, enclosed courtyard where the hundred Rank 2 Magi of the Black Legion honed their craft.
Seeing the men diligently engaging in combat drills, the youth couldn’t help but nod in appreciation. He then saw Raidon standing right outside the training grounds, directing the men in a militaristic manner.
When the man’s gaze was drawn to the black-robed youth, he immediately rushed to him. “My Lord, forgive me! I was unaware of your arrival. Or I would have welcomed you at the gates!”
Adam waved his hand nonchalantly as he got off the horse. “No need to be so formal with me. I dislike such things.”
“But…” Raidon tried to protest. How could he not show the customary etiquette towards his superior?
However, Adam interrupted him with a faint smile. “Don’t worry about it. You’ll gradually get used to it.” He then looked around at the place and added, “How about you show me around?”
“It would be my honor!” Raidon then proceeded to give the youth the tour of the fortress.
The exterior structure of the Black Bastion comprised of towering outer walls, the massive iron gates of the legion that Adam just entered through, and finally four reinforced watchtowers in each of the corners.
The heart of the fortress was home to the Iron Spire. It served as both the seat of command as well as the quarters of the Lord Commander.
There was also the Raven Tower which served as a messenger outpost. It served as the communication post used to relay urgent orders across the city.
Other than the training grounds and drill yards in the open, there were the barracks and living quarters for the men.
Unlike ordinary garrisons, however, the Black Legion’s barracks resembled spartan warrior halls, designed to house only the best of the best. Each Magus was given an individual private chamber.
Then there was the massive underground arsenal housing the legion’s weapons and armor. Furthermore, there was also a blacksmith’s chamber here where items were forged specifically for the members of the Black Legion.
“So, everyone wields dual swords, eh?” Adam glanced at the row full of bladed weapons.
He grabbed one and casually swung it around. Then he observed the blade of the sword and tapped it with his finger. “Not bad, I suppose.”
“Yes, my lord.” Raidon respectfully nodded. “Every Magus in the Legion is an expert at wielding twin blades. As you may have noticed in the sigil of the Black Legion, right beneath the raven lie two swords.”
He then paused for a moment before asking, “My Lord, might I inquire as to what weapons you wield?”
“Me?” Adam asked with a raised eyebrow. “I usually prefer to use my fists, but… lately I’ve been growing quite fond of daggers.”
He glanced at Raidon and reiterated with a smirk, “Twin daggers, that is.”
Hearing those words, Raidon couldn’t help but grin. “Me and the rest of the Legion are eagerly waiting for the day that you would spar with us, my lord!”
“No need to wait.” Adam walked upstairs, his hand clasped behind his back. “Let’s spar now. I’ve been wanting to gauge the strength of my new brothers.”
…
An hour later, Adam sat upon a boulder inside the training courtyard. He had crossed his legs—his right ankle resting on his left knee—in a leisurely manner as he wrote something down on a parchment.
Before him lay dozens of men squirming on the ground, groaning in intense pain. Although it was a light spar, Adam had given them a good beating.

None of them bled, however. Adam had managed his strength properly. Despite that, the men were reduced to such a state.
Outside, the training grounds, the men who were preparing to enter the spar next suddenly found themselves devoid of any will to fight.
They couldn’t help but look at each other and gulp. Just what the hell had they witnessed?!
Adam had effortlessly taken down more than thirty men all on his own. This was including their former Lord Commander, Raidon!
To them it felt as if an adult had entered the grounds and easily dispatched the toddlers.
Raidon, who was standing beside Adam, did his best to stop an embarrassing groan from escaping his lips. “My Lord… did you really not use mana?”
“Uh-huh.” Adam nodded absentmindedly.
Monster! Raidon thought to himself. There was not even a scratch on the youth. No, forget landing a hit, he and his men weren’t even able to touch the hems of Adam’s clothes.
The youth’s fighting techniques were so fluid. It appeared as if he was in a drunken trance while he moved around, but every one of his attacks landed with deadly accuracy.
Just what kind of combat technique was that?! Raidon couldn’t help but think in bewilderment.
He made use of every part of his body to attack… Whether it was his fists, elbows, knees, or feet. I’ve never witnessed such penetrative power!
He… looked like a specter!
“Hmm, there you go,” said the raven-haired youth as he handed a couple of parchment papers to Raidon.
“My Lord, this is…”
Adam smiled, “A mana combat technique that utilizes dual blades.”
Although Raidon was slightly taken aback by this sudden gesture, he didn’t think much of it. After all, their current mana combat technique had been personally given to them by the Lord Marshall of Ravenfell, Sabrina Benton.
So how could something that Adam gave them compare to what the Lord Marshall gave them? The answer was clear to Raidon.
Nonetheless, he was immensely appreciative for his new Lord Commander’s gesture.
“Thank you, my lord.” He accepted the scrolls with both hands.
“Sure,” Adam spoke nonchalantly. “Oh, and make sure this technique doesn’t get into the hands of someone who isn’t from the Black Legion, understood?”
However, he received no response.
Because Raidon’s attention was completely drawn to the scrolls. His eyes had widened and he was sweating profusely.
“What… What is this?!!!”
