Chapter 823: A Wolf and A Dragon
Adam peacefully slept the entire night within the cave.

He had barely been getting any rest ever since he entered the Murky Mountains, constantly on the lookout for anything that might happen.

These were dangerous lands, after all, and he had to be alert at all times.

But in Blackie’s presence, all his worries had vanished and he could finally let down his guard.

Moreover, the mountain was teeming with all sorts of wolves whose strength ranged from the Mana Foundation Rank to the Mana Vortex Rank.

All these wolves seemed to be Blackie’s underlings, adding another layer of security. Thus, this mountain was the safest place Adam could be in within the Murky Mountains.

“You stay here, Val,” said the raven-haired youth as he changed into a set of white robes. “I’m going to set a grand runic formation around the mountain. That should help the old man.”

He spoke the last words while staring at the towering stone doors behind him. “It will definitely help him.”

Meanwhile, Valerian completely ignored Adam as he was busy circling Blackie. It would seem that his excitement still hadn’t died down.

“Something of this scale is sure to require a lot of resources,” Blackie spoke in a calm voice. “I do not have any knowledge of rune magic, but I am aware that Ronesmiths require high-quality magical ingredients while establishing runic formations.”

“Ah, don’t worry about it.” Adam waved his hand nonchalantly. “I think I have more than enough ingredients. Don’t forget I’m a Herbalist. I always carry magical ingredients with me.”

“But what about their quality?” Blackie pressed. “Last I remember, you had only become a Grade 2 Herbalist while under Berger’s tutelage.”

Adam nodded. “Most of the ingredients I have are Grade 2, so it should be fine. I also have a few Grade 3 ingredients which I’m planning to use in all the core anchor points of the formation.”

The youth displayed a confident smile, “Rest assured. I will pour my heart and soul into constructing this runic formation.”

Blackie remained silent for a few moments. From what he’d gathered, the mana-gathering runic formation would be highly beneficial for Berger’s advancement to the Mana Core Rank.

Setting aside the shock of finding out that such a runic formation even existed in this place, in Adam’s possession, no less, Blackie knew that the higher quality the ingredients used in the formation, the greater the final result.

“Hold on a second,” he said as he closed his eyes.

Adam was curious about what the wolf would do. Then, under his stunned gaze, he saw something similar to a tiny portal open inside Blackie’s mouth!

From it, a large wooden trunk shot out and landed at Adam’s feet.

The youth’s mouth was wide agape. “It’s been a while since I’ve seen you do that,” he said incredulously.

“See if they will suffice.” Blackie gestured to the trunk.

Adam crouched and curiously opened the lid of the trunk. Soon, his eyebrows arched in surprise. “These are… all of them are Grade 3 ingredients! Wait… there are even a few Grade 4 ingredients!”

“Use whatever you need,” Blackie said with a nod.

It took a little while for Adam to come to his senses. He then couldn’t help but beam. “This is perfect! The effects of the runic formation will be far more potent now!”

He put away the wooden trunk inside his earrings and immediately departed, leaving behind his parting words, “It’ll take several weeks for me to finish my work. I’ll be leaving Val in your care.”

With that said, he disappeared from his spot, using his mobility technique.

“Blackie! Blackie! Let’s play!” Valerian continued to excitedly run circles around the black wolf. “Let’s play! Let’s play! Myu!”

The wolf turned to the young dragon and couldn’t help but smile warmly. “Little Valerian, you should be about twenty years of age now, yes?”

Valerian nodded his head excitedly, “Yes! Now, let’s play!”

Blackie chuckled seeing the young dragon act so animated. “Before we play, tell me what you have learned in these past years.”

“Learned?” Valerian sat down, stroking his furry face with his paw just like he’d seen his brother do countless times.

“Hmm, I’ve learned how to count. I also know the currency conversion rate between the Southern Federation and the Acadian Empire. Right, I can also tell if gold is real or not!”

The wolf’s lips couldn’t help but twitch listening to that answer. “The conversion rate? Why would you…”

Sigh, he’s just like Adam, he thought.

Both of them seem to have a profound love for money.

He suddenly thought of something, causing his expression to turn stern. “Valerian, you haven’t been drinking, have you?”

“Drinking?” Valerian asked with a cute tilt of his head. “I drink milk sometimes. It’s not bad.”

“No, I meant wine.” The black wolf shook his head. “I hope you haven’t been drinking wine.”

“No, no, no, no!” Valerian shook his head vigorously. “Big Brother doesn’t even let me come near it. This one time, I asked him to let me taste some of his wine, but he scolded me! He even starved me for that entire day! And told me never to drink wine. Ever.”

Blackie let out a light chuckle. “Very well, then.”

He then slowly walked out of the cave. “Come with me. I’ll teach you how to hunt.”

“Why?” Valerian made a face, but followed behind him nonetheless. “Why can’t we play like we used to in Moon City…”

“Hunting is the same,” Blackie smirked. “But the stakes are higher.”

“Fine, if you say so…”

And just like that, the two trekked down the mountain.

In this distant corner of the universe, a young dragon was learning the art of the hunt from a wolf.

A wolf whose bloodline was no less noble, no less ancient, than that of dragons themselves!

…

At the bottom of the mountain, Adam found a nice spot to lay down the first of five anchor points for the grand runic formation.

He looked around the empty plot of land before him and nodded. “Yes, this will do.”

Then, he rolled his sleeves to his elbows and sat at a nearby boulder. He retrieved a metallic disk in the shape of a pentagram from his earrings and then began carving intricate runes on it.

He injected mana into the item that looked like a mixture of a chisel and a quill, and continued to diligently carve esoteric symbols on the disk.

The carvings were absolutely precise as his hands moved across the surface of the disk with purpose.

In the near distance, concealed in the shadows of a deciduous tree, a mysterious figure observed him with quiet curiosity.

The surprising part was…

Even with his Sphere of Resonance active, Adam remained completely unaware of the presence watching him!
