Chapter 82: Clearing Second And Third Floors
The adrenaline that had fueled their skirmish with the Twilight Wolves now ebbed away, leaving the Silver Ravens Guild on the edge of exhaustion. Yet, there was no respite to be had. The dungeon stretched on, and the second floor, Ember Fox Hollow, loomed ahead like a promise of trials yet to come.
Halvard, the hulking leader of the party, stood before the entrance to the next level, his massive greatsword slung casually over one shoulder. His voice, deep and commanding, resonated in the cavern. “Alright, listen up! We’re heading into Ember Fox Hollow. These fiery pests are quick on their feet and spit fire like it’s a party trick. Stick together, stay sharp, and don’t do anything reckless.” His piercing gaze swept over the group, lingering a moment longer on Alaric, as if he half-expected the young mage to do exactly that.
Alaric, undeterred, stood near the front. His emerald eyes scanned the dimly lit tunnels ahead, the flickering flames casting eerie, undulating shadows on the walls. Reaching into his robes, he pulled out an ornate pendant, its intricate runes glowing faintly as he activated it. A soothing chill swept over him, the enchantment forming a protective barrier around him.
Rosalind, her crimson hair catching the light like molten gold, glanced at the pendant. A playful smirk graced her lips. “That’s some fancy handiwork. Who’d you steal it from?”
Alaric chuckled, the sound warm and easy. “Made it myself, actually. Well, with a bit of help from Iridelle. It’s got an enchantment to block flame damage and amp up my water magic. Handy, right?”
“Handy and flashy,” Rosalind teased, but her tone held genuine admiration.
Merja, who had been sharpening her twin daggers nearby, leaned closer to examine the pendant. Her hazel eyes widened slightly. “That’s some master-level craftsmanship. Didn’t know you had it in you, Alaric.”
“I’ve got a few surprises,” he replied, his grin laced with confidence. His gaze lingered on her just long enough to make her blush, but before Merja could respond, Halvard’s booming voice brought everyone to attention.
“Move out!” the leader commanded, and the group descended into the tunnels of Ember Fox Hollow.
The heat was stifling, the air thick with sulfur and ash. Flames flickered along the walls, their glow making the cavern seem alive. Each twist and turn of the maze-like tunnels could conceal an ambush, and the party moved cautiously, weapons ready.
The first Ember Fox appeared with a snarl, its blazing fur illuminating the shadows. Its ember-like eyes locked onto Alaric, a fireball forming in its gaping maw. Without hesitation, Alaric raised his hand. “Aqua Bulwark!” he intoned, and a shimmering shield of water coalesced in front of him. The fireball struck the barrier and fizzled out in a hiss of steam.
“Nice reflexes,” Rosalind remarked, stepping forward. Her own hands glowed with arcane energy as she cast “Thunder Strike,” a bolt of lightning streaking through the air and striking the fox. It yelped in pain but remained standing.
“Just warming up,” Alaric quipped, summoning a whip of water. “Aqua Lash!” The water tendril lashed out, ensnaring the fox and slamming it against the cavern wall. It crumbled into embers, and Alaric turned to Rosalind with a grin. “See? Easy.”
“Show-off,” she muttered, but the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her amusement.
The deeper they ventured, the more aggressive the Ember Foxes became. They darted from shadows, their fireballs a relentless barrage. Alaric’s pendant absorbed much of the heat, allowing him to focus on counterattacking. He cast “Frost Fang,” launching jagged shards of ice that froze several foxes in their tracks.

At one particularly chaotic juncture, Merja found herself cornered, an Ember Fox lunging at her with flames roaring from its maw. Alaric sprang into action, his voice calm but firm. “Glacial Barrier!” he shouted, and an icy dome encased Merja, the fox’s flames harmlessly dissipating against it. The mage dispelled the barrier with a flick of his wrist and offered Merja a hand. “Careful, sweetheart. Wouldn’t want anything to happen to that pretty face of yours.”
Merja’s cheeks flushed, and for a moment, she stared at him, speechless. “I… thanks,” she managed, quickly looking away.
Nearby, Illona was grappling with her own peril. An Ember Fox had leapt at her, its claws aimed for her throat. Alaric’s voice rang out again. “Cryo Lance!” A spear of ice shot forward, piercing the fox mid-air. It dissolved into embers, and Alaric strode over to Illona, offering a hand to help her up.
“You alright, beautiful?” he asked, his tone laced with genuine concern. His emerald eyes sparkled mischievously as he added, “You can thank me with dinner after this.”
Illona’s face turned crimson, and she stammered, “I… maybe.”
Rosalind, observing the exchanges, smirked knowingly. She sidled up to Merja and whispered, “He’s got a way with words, doesn’t he?”
Merja’s blush deepened, and she muttered, “I hadn’t noticed.”
“Sure you haven’t,” Rosalind teased before turning her attention back to the fight.
The tunnels opened into a vast cavern, its walls glowing with an intense, fiery light. At the center stood the Emberflame Vixen, a monstrous fox with fur like molten lava and eyes that burned with an unsettling intelligence. The heat radiating from its body made the air shimmer, and the ground beneath its paws was scorched black.
Halvard hefted his sword, his expression grim. “This is it,” he growled. “Stay on your toes. This one’s not going down easy.”
The Vixen let out a deafening roar, and a wave of searing heat swept through the cavern. Alaric’s pendant flared to life, shielding him from the worst of it, but several party members stumbled back, sweat pouring down their faces.
“Crimson Rain!” Rosalind shouted, her hands weaving an intricate pattern. A cascade of fiery bolts rained down on the Vixen, forcing it to retreat momentarily. Merja darted in, her daggers flashing as she struck at the creature’s flanks. Illona followed, her frost-covered staff striking at the Vixen’s legs in an attempt to slow it down.
The beast retaliated with a swipe of its massive tail, sending both women flying. Alaric’s heart lurched, and he acted on instinct. “Arctic Ward!” he yelled, creating a protective barrier around the fallen women. The Vixen’s claws raked against the ice, unable to break through.
He rushed to their side, helping Illona to her feet. “I’ve got you,” he murmured, his hand lingering on her arm a moment longer than necessary. She looked up at him, her blush returning despite the chaos around them.
Merja groaned as she pushed herself upright. “You’re too reckless,” she chided, though her tone lacked any real bite.
“Reckless?” Alaric repeated with a grin. “I’d call it heroic.”
Before either woman could respond, the Vixen let out another roar, flames erupting from its body in a fiery shockwave. The group scattered, each member narrowly avoiding the inferno. Halvard charged in, his sword glowing with a crimson light. “Infernal Cleave!” he bellowed, bringing the blade down in a powerful arc. The Vixen howled as the strike left a deep gash across its side.
Alaric seized the opening. “Frost Nova!” he cried, a surge of icy energy freezing the Vixen’s legs in place. Rosalind followed up with “Storm Lance,” a crackling bolt of electricity that struck the beast square in the chest. The cavern filled with the smell of ozone and burnt fur.
But the Vixen wasn’t done yet. With a guttural snarl, it summoned a torrent of flames that engulfed the room. Alaric acted fast, conjuring a “Tidal Veil” to shield the group from the inferno. The water barrier shimmered as it absorbed the heat, but cracks began to form under the intense pressure.
“We need to end this now!” Halvard shouted, his voice strained.
Rosalind turned to Alaric, her eyes fierce. “Can you freeze it one more time?”
“I’ll try,” he replied, sweat dripping down his face. Channeling every ounce of his magic, he cast “Glacial Bind.” Thick chains of ice erupted from the ground, wrapping around the Vixen and locking it in place.
Halvard roared, charging forward with his sword raised high. “This ends now!” He brought the blade down in a devastating strike, cleaving through the Vixen’s neck. The beast let out a final, mournful howl before collapsing, its body dissolving into a pile of embers.
The group stood in silence, their breaths ragged and bodies aching. The cavern, now eerily quiet, was filled only with the soft crackle of dying flames.
Halvard clapped Alaric on the back, his grin wide despite the exhaustion etched on his face. “Well done, kid. You saved our hides out there.”
Alaric smirked, his green eyes twinkling. “Just doing my part.”
Rosalind sidled up to him, her expression a mix of pride and exasperation. “You’re going to give me a heart attack one of these days.”
“Only if I’m lucky,” he teased, slipping an arm around her waist. She slapped his hand away with a mock glare, though her cheeks betrayed a faint blush.
Merja and Illona approached, both looking somewhat flustered. “Thanks for the save,” Illona said softly, her blue eyes meeting his.
“Anytime,” Alaric replied, his tone warm. “Though I’ll hold you to that dinner.”
Illona’s blush deepened, and even Merja couldn’t suppress a small smile.
As the group gathered their strength, they knew the dungeon’s third floor awaited. But for now, they allowed themselves a moment of triumph, their bonds forged stronger in the heat of battle.
The descent into Frost Bear Cavern was like stepping into another world. The oppressive heat of Ember Fox Hollow was replaced with a bone-chilling cold. Frost coated the jagged walls of the cavern, glinting faintly in the pale light of magical orbs held by the Silver Ravens Guild. Each breath misted into the icy air, and the crunch of frozen ground underfoot seemed louder than it should have been, echoing eerily through the passageways.
Alaric tugged his cloak tighter around himself, his emerald eyes scanning the dimly lit surroundings. The water-enchanted pendant he had used in the previous level hung dormant around his neck. As they prepared to face the cold, he swapped it out for a new piece of equipment—a ring of his own creation, etched with runes designed to amplify fire-based magic. He slid it onto his finger and felt the warmth of the enchantment spread through him.
“You sure you’ll be able to handle the cold, Alaric?” Rosalind teased, her crimson hair catching the light as she glanced back at him. Her breath formed small clouds as she spoke.
“Oh, I’ll manage,” Alaric replied with a smirk. “I’ve got my own way of staying warm.” His gaze briefly lingered on her, and though his tone was casual, the faint blush that touched Rosalind’s cheeks didn’t go unnoticed.
Halvard, the group’s leader, strode to the front of the party, his massive form wrapped in layers of thick fur. “Enough chatter. Frost Bears might be slow, but they’ll tear you apart if you’re careless. Stay sharp, stay together. And remember—we’re not leaving anyone behind.”
The group nodded, their expressions grim. They had already faced death too many times in this dungeon, and no one doubted that the Frost Bears would be just as lethal as the Ember Foxes, if not more.
The first Frost Bear emerged from the shadows not long after they entered the cavern. It was a monstrous beast, towering over even Halvard. Its fur was a patchwork of white and silver, glistening with frost, and its breath came in visible plumes that seemed to chill the air further. The bear’s icy blue eyes locked onto the group with a feral intensity, and it roared, the sound reverberating through the icy walls.
“Formation!” Halvard barked, hefting his greatsword.
Alaric was already moving, his ring glowing faintly as he conjured a sphere of fire in his palm. “Let’s see how you like this,” he muttered, hurling the spell at the bear. The fireball struck the creature square in the chest, singeing its fur and eliciting an enraged roar.
Goran charged forward, his mace swinging in a brutal arc. The impact hit the bear’s shoulder, sending a cascade of frost and fur into the air, but the beast barely flinched. It swiped at Goran with a massive paw, the blow sending him skidding across the ice.
“Damn it!” Merja hissed, darting in with her twin daggers. She moved like a shadow, her blades flashing as she aimed for the bear’s legs.
The creature snarled, turning its attention to her. Just as it reared back for an attack, Alaric stepped in, flames bursting to life around him. “Ignis Torrent!” he shouted, releasing a concentrated stream of fire that struck the bear’s face. It howled in pain, staggering back and giving Merja a chance to retreat.
“Nice save,” she called, her voice tinged with grudging respect.
Alaric grinned. “Just keeping things interesting.”
Rosalind stepped forward, her hands glowing with electric energy. “Fulminate Strike!” she cried, sending a bolt of lightning arcing toward the bear. The electricity danced across its massive frame, eliciting another roar of pain as its movements became sluggish.
Halvard and Goran seized the opportunity, their weapons crashing into the creature with brutal precision. The Frost Bear fell with a final, pained roar, its body dissolving into a mound of icy shards.
The deeper they ventured, the more relentless the Frost Bears became. The cavern seemed alive with danger, the walls glistening like the fangs of some great beast. Each encounter pushed the group closer to their limits. Alaric’s spells burned brighter and hotter, the ring on his finger almost glowing with the strain of constant use.
During one particularly brutal fight, Illona found herself cornered by a bear. Her arcane spells ricocheted off its thick fur, barely slowing it down. She stumbled, her back hitting the icy wall, and the creature loomed over her, its maw opening wide.
“Alaric!” she screamed, panic evident in her voice.
He didn’t hesitate. With a quick motion, he conjured a blazing whip of fire and lashed it around the bear’s neck, yanking it backward. “Get down!” he shouted, sending a second whip to strike its side. The creature howled, its fur igniting as it staggered away from Illona.
She looked up at him, her blue eyes wide with a mix of gratitude and awe. “You… you saved me.”
He offered her a cocky grin, his emerald eyes glinting. “What can I say? I’ve got a soft spot for damsels in distress.”
Illona’s cheeks flushed a deep red, and she quickly looked away, muttering something under her breath as she scrambled to rejoin the group.
By the time they reached the heart of the cavern, half the party was nursing injuries. Goran’s arm hung at an awkward angle, clearly broken, while Merja limped, her leg slashed open by a bear’s claws. Rosalind’s face was pale but determined, a gash running down her left arm. Despite their condition, they pressed on.
The final chamber was a sight to behold. Ice covered every surface, glittering in the pale light. At its center stood the Glacial Ursine, a creature even larger than the Frost Bears. Its fur sparkled like freshly fallen snow, and its breath filled the room with an unnatural chill.
“Positions!” Halvard barked, raising his sword. “This one’s not going down easy!”
The group scattered, each member taking up a strategic position. Alaric cast “Inferno Wall,” creating a towering barrier of flame that slowed the Ursine’s advance. But the beast let out a bellowing roar, extinguishing the fire with a burst of icy wind.
“It’s nullifying fire magic!” Rosalind shouted. “We need a new strategy!”
The fight became a desperate struggle. The Ursine’s massive claws tore through the ice, sending shards flying. Halvard and Goran managed to land heavy blows, but the beast seemed almost impervious. Merja darted in, landing a strike on its flank before narrowly avoiding a swipe of its claws.
Illona cast “Celestial Bind,” summoning golden chains of light that wrapped around the Ursine’s legs. The beast roared in fury, struggling against the restraints.
Alaric saw his chance. “Everyone, get back!” he shouted.
He began to chant, the runes on his ring glowing brighter than ever. “Infernal Tempest!” he cried, unleashing a torrent of fire that engulfed the Ursine. The cavern filled with searing heat, the ice melting away as the beast roared in pain. But it wasn’t enough. With a final, desperate lunge, the Ursine broke free, its claws striking Alaric and sending him sprawling.
“Alaric!” Rosalind screamed, rushing to his side.
Dazed but alive, Alaric grinned up at her. “I’m fine. Just… needed a nap.”
Rosalind’s lips quirked despite herself. “Idiot. Stay down.”
The others rallied, their combined efforts finally bringing the Ursine to its knees. Halvard delivered the finishing blow, his sword piercing the beast’s heart. The Ursine let out one final roar before collapsing, its massive body dissolving into shimmering ice.
The cavern fell silent, save for the labored breaths of the group. Several members were gravely injured, their armor torn and blood staining the icy floor. Rosalind helped Alaric to his feet, her gaze soft with concern.
“You really scared me back there,” she admitted quietly.
“Sorry,” Alaric said, his tone uncharacteristically serious. Then, with a mischievous grin, he added, “Want to warm me up as payback?”
Rosalind’s cheeks turned scarlet, but she didn’t pull away as he wrapped an arm around her. His body heat seeped into her, and she shivered—not from the cold, but from the closeness. She glanced around, relieved to see the others were too busy tending to the wounded to notice.
“Alaric… behave,” she murmured, though her voice lacked conviction.
“Never,” he whispered back, earning a flustered glare.
As the group regrouped and tended to their injuries, the cavern’s icy silence seemed almost peaceful. They had cleared the third floor—but the dungeon’s challenges were far from over.
