Chapter 110: ~Intermission~ Worried Mother
Ashgate Asylum, Metro City…
There was a massive hall.
The faint shuffle of feet, murmurs, and the occasional squeak of a wheelchair wheel could be heard.
Patients wandered aimlessly as their expressions ranged from distant to vacant, as if the very walls of the hospital dulled their senses.
Among them, a beauty in a long white garment strode with an elegance so profound it seemed out of place.
Her raven-black hair swam down her back and her piercing fox-like blue eyes darted ahead, unbothered by the stares she was attracting. She was a walking masterpiece, the kind of beauty that demanded attention without effort.
Seated at a table off to the side, a group of security guards lingered, pretending to look busy, but the desperation in their eyes told a different story.
“Dude…”
“Don’t worry. I can see her clearly, damn!”
“I still can’t believe how gorgeous she is. She’s got that Marilyn Monroe kind of beauty, but, like, modern. Classic old-money vibes, you know?”
“Yeah! And that black hair? Goddamn. And those sharp blue eyes? Man, I could stare into them all day.”
A third guard, cradling a lukewarm coffee, chuckled and shook his head.
“She’s so stunning, I don’t even want to know what her body looks like. I’m convinced it doesn’t even matter. She’s beautiful no matter what.”
The youngest guard in the group hadn’t taken his eyes off her since she entered. His jaw worked slowly as he watched her every move, entranced.
“She’s gotta be a model or something, right? Like, this isn’t normal. This kind of beauty would put all those friggin’ Ozempic-chewing Instaflick celebs to shame.”
A bald guard, sitting slightly apart from the rest, smirked and tapped the table twice to catch their attention.
“You guys wanna know something interesting about her? I got some good info on her a few days back.”
The group fell silent, then leaned in instinctively.
But one of them, a burly man with a buzzcut, immediately frowned and waved his hand furiously.
“Hell no, man! Are you trying to get us fired? We’re not supposed to look up patient info. That’s for the docs and admin. You wanna end up scrubbing toilets for the rest of your life, dumbass?”
The bald guard shrugged, unbothered.
“Relax. I’m not stupid. I just heard some things, okay? You want to know or not?”
The others exchanged shameless glances before one of them finally caved.
“Alright, what’ve you got?”
Leaning in closer, the bald guard lowered his voice.
“Word is, she was a model. One of the hottest in the world, back in the day. Some cosmetics companies even still use her old photos, trying to recreate the magic of her face or whatever.”
A collective “Oooooooh…” rippled through the group as they nodded in unison.
They now wanted to know more.
The woman kept walking quietly toward the counter.
There was something about the way she moved—smooth and confident, like someone who used to be in the spotlight. The other patients stepped out of her way without even thinking about it, almost like they didn’t want to mess up the moment.

At the counter, the young nurse greeted her with an overly cheery smile.
“Oh, Ms. McQueen! Always a pleasure to see that beautiful face of yours. Honestly, I really wish I looked half as good as you do.”
Martha McQueen said nothing.
Her eyes were cold… they were always cold.
She extended her hand.
The nurse’s smile faltered slightly as she glanced at the tag on Martha’s gown to confirm her patient number.
“Alright, let me grab your prescription…”
She said awkwardly, then turned to the cabinet.
She quickly retrieved the small orange bottle of pills and handed it over.
Martha snatched the bottle without a word.
“So…”
The nurse was still trying to sound friendly.
“… How’ve you been feeling this past week? You know, one more month here and you’ll be ready for your yearlong rehab. Bet you’re excited to finally be discharged, huh?”
Martha’s grip on the bottle tightened as her icy blue eyes snapped to the nurse.
“I don’t need rehab…”
There was heavy disgust yet calmness in her voice.
Like she was irritated, but it wasn’t worth her time.
It was the same kind of tone many celebrities would use for reporters who asked them stupid questions.
The nurse raised her brows.
“Uh-huh…”
She mumbled under her breath as Martha stormed off.
“Sure you don’t…”
The guards watched from their corner as their desperate eyes followed Martha’s departing figure.
“Man…”
The young guard was still mesmerized.
“Even when she’s pissed off, she’s perfect.”
“Psssh──I guess…”
The bald guard smirked as he leaned back in his chair with the smugness of someone about to drop a bombshell.
“So, like I was saying…”
He drawled, gesturing with his lukewarm coffee.
The other guards turned back toward him with renewed interest, their earlier fascination with Martha momentarily put on hold.
“Damn, you still got more?”
The youngest one asked eagerly.
His eyes still flitted occasionally toward the retreating figure of Martha McQueen.
The bald guard reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, waving it slightly before setting it down on the table.
“Alright, listen up. You know how I said I heard some things about her? Well, I went digging—nothing crazy, just poking around—and found out she has a guardian.”
“A guardian?”
The burly guard with the buzzcut frowned.
He was already suspicious.
“She doesn’t look like she needs one. She’s walking around just fine.”
“Exactly…”
The bald guard replied with a sly grin.
“But it’s not just any guardian. Apparently, it’s her son. Listed right there in the system. And get this—he comes to see her about once or twice a year.”
The others leaned in closer as their interest piqued despite themselves.
“A son?” the youngest guard repeated with interest.
“Yup.”
The bald guard unlocked his phone and gently slid it across the table.
On the screen was a photo—a candid shot of a man in his late twenties with sharp, symmetrical features, neatly combed dark hair, and the same piercing blue eyes as Martha.
The guards’ reactions were immediate.
“Who’s that?”
The buzzcut guard asked, raising an eyebrow.
The youngest guard grabbed the phone, zooming in on the picture. His brows furrowed in thought before he suddenly snapped his fingers.
“Ohh, wait, I know this guy! That’s Scott!”
He exclaimed with some excitement.
“Dude, he’s all over LoopVid and Chirper. Women are obsessed with him. Like, even married women. It’s crazy. He’s crazy handsome… anyone can see that!”
The buzzcut guard leaned in to take another look as he squinted slightly.
“Eh…”
He acted indifferently as he crossed his arms.
“I’ve seen better. He’s alright, I guess. But not worth all that hype.”
The youngest guard shot him a disbelieving look.
“Are you blind? Look at that bone structure! And those eyes! C’mon, man, this dude’s the whole package!”
The bald guard snatched his phone back, chuckling.
“Well, hype or not, the guy’s apparently her kid. Same last name. Same ridiculous blue eyes. It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together.”
He paused dramatically, then slid his phone back into his pocket.
“And here’s the best part…”
The man grinned like a gremlin up to no good.
“I called 24/7 CityWatch News. They’ve been looking for this guy for days—some crappy story about how he’s this super-reclusive heartthrob or whatever. Anyway, I got the $10,000 reward for giving them the lead. Can’t believe it was that easy!”
He laughed, leaning back in his chair triumphantly.
The other guards stared at him, their expressions ranging from disappointment to outright disgust.
“Wow…”
The buzzcut guard finally said, shaking his head.
“You really used your position to peek into a patient’s private records just to simp over her and then sold her kid out to the media? That’s low, even for you.”
Another guard chimed in with a grim tone.
“Fame at a young age… that’s one of the worst things in the world. Kid’s probably not ready for it. What if that’s what made Martha end up here in the first place?”
He talked like one of those drunk sailors at the docks who acted like they’d seen everything.
The bald guard waved them off, unbothered.
“Oh, please. You’re just jealous you didn’t think of it first. I’m the smart one here, and tonight? Drinks are on me!”
Despite their moral objections, the promise of free drinks quickly won them over. The guards raised their hands in fake celebration, letting out a halfhearted cheer.
“Fine, but you’re buying top-shelf!”
The buzzcut guard grumbled, pointing a finger at him.
Their brief celebration was interrupted when the youngest guard suddenly froze.
His eyes widened in utter shock.
“Wait…” he muttered.
The others immediately noticed.
“What’s wrong? Why’re you killing the vibe?”
The bald guard asked, frowning.
The youngest guard shot to his feet.
“Martha’s still in the hall. And last I checked, that Scott guy is supposed to be on the news today.”
He looked around like a deranged person.
“Oh no—the TVs!”
Panic erupted among the group as the youngest guard bolted toward the hall.
・・・
Martha stood frozen in front of the large television mounted on the wall. On the screen was a live broadcast—a massive interview where Scott McQueen was surrounded by reporters and adoring fangirls, agents from huge fashion brands and so much more.
His handsome face was framed by flashing cameras.
Her face twisted as she pointed at the screen.
“No… that’s…”
Her voice started trembling like it would break.
“Th-, That’s… that’s my son…”
Her panic escalated rapidly. She clutched at her gown as her breaths came in short, ragged gasps.
“That’s my son! That’s my baby boy—I’m sure of it!”
Her voice rose to a scream that echoed through the hall.
“Why is he on television?! Who are those women around him?! I want to see him!”
The guards and nurses rushed toward her.
“Ms. McQueen, calm down!”
One of the nurses pleaded and her voice strained as she tried to grab hold of the thrashing woman.
Martha’s trembling intensified as she screamed again.
“I WANT TO SEE HIM! HE’S MY SON!”
There was such a raw desperation in her voice.
Despite their efforts, it took several guards to restrain her.
Her heart-wrenching screams touched everyone.
“Why is he there?! Why?! He’s my baby boy!”
Finally, one of the nurses managed to jab a sedative into her arm. Martha’s thrashing slowed and her screams faded into murmurs as the drug took effect. Her body went limp, and the guards carefully lowered her to the ground.
In the silence that followed, the youngest guard stood frozen with a pale face.
“Sigh~ we really screwed up…”
