Chapter 48: Suspicious & Unidentified
Scott walked out of the fancy side room, pulling his sleek black blazer over his shoulders and straightening it. He took a moment to adjust the cuffs of his shirt, making sure everything looked just right.
[Blueprints for the ATAM-5 suit are complete. Construction has commenced at the System Factory. Automated Stealth Vehicle is fully weaponized and will be deployed to Gwen’s location in five minutes.]
The corner of his lips tugged up briefly as he slotted his hands into his pockets.
“Finally making progress…”
He started walking down the hallway.
[Turn left.]
Scott stopped mid-step as his eyebrows knitted together.
“Huh?”
But the System didn’t respond.
He looked around, shrugged, and turned left as instructed.
The corridor stretched ahead, flanked by ornate wall sconces and massive oil paintings that screamed wealth and pretentiousness. He walked with casual confidence, but from the right, someone entered—someone whose presence may have changed Scott’s night for better or worse.
Pulsar.
Her light steps faltered when she saw him—or, rather, almost saw him. She was focused on the message on her phone with her lips pressed into a small, pensive pout. Her thumb hovered over the screen, hesitating to type a reply as she walked.
『What’s the point in replying a message from over a week ago? I think it’s stupid, but still…』
The faintest flicker of a smile touched her face.
She did her best to hide her sadness as she brushed her fingers over Scott’s name on the screen.
“I miss you…”
Her eyes flicked up briefly and caught a glimpse of a familiar figure disappearing down the left hallway.
She stopped in her tracks and tilted her head.
“…Scott?”
She muttered, then shook her head with a weak chuckle.
“I must be seeing things.”
And just like that, she kept walking and sulking as her dull eyes fell back to the message.
—
Oblivious to the near encounter, Scott finally got back to the main event hall.
The huge room was packed with high-society elites.
Their laughter and quiet chatter synced with the soft clinking of champagne glasses. The place was so over-the-top it felt stifling, with wealth and ego hanging heavy in the air.
It didn’t take long for Scott to feel his stomach turn.
『These guys remind me of my Maxwell…』
He scanned the room and his eyes narrowed.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
No Emma.
Just a sea of overly perfumed aristocrats and snobs with fake smiles plastered across their faces.
Then, his eyes locked onto someone… someone who definitely didn’t belong in the background.
Albrecht.
The man was glaring at him like he was going to strangle the neck of the first kitten he saw. His posture was rigid, his hands balled into fists at his sides.
Scott raised an eyebrow. “Who’s this clown?”
Albrecht didn’t give him much time to wonder. He marched toward Scott, his finger already jabbing through the air.
“You!”
He barked with a sharp voice.
Heads began to turn.
Scott blinked, taken aback, but he didn’t flinch.
“Uh… me?”
Albrecht’s steps didn’t slow. Before Scott could react, the man grabbed his collar and yanked him close. The fiery rage in his eyes burned with self-righteous fury.
“You’re the bastard trying to make my cousin look like a fool, aren’t you?!”
Scott tilted his head, utterly unfazed. “Your cousin?”
“Isaac!”
Albrecht spat as his grip tightened.
“I’ve trained in the military for four years! I’m a dangerous weapon, you hear me? Emma doesn’t belong to you. If I see you around her again, I’ll—”
“Break me in half?”
Scott finished and snickered very mockingly.
“Pfft—cornball.”
The insult hit Albrecht like a slap to the face.
His teeth ground together audibly, and he growled.
“I’m not joking, you broke—”
“Broke guy?”
Scott interrupted again.
His smirk was even wider this time.
“Man, I feel bad for your cousin. Imagine having all that money and still losing a bad bitch like Emma to a brokie like me. I wonder who really won in this situation…”
The insult stung worse than any punch.
Albrecht’s face turned red as his voice rose.
“Shut up, you—”
But Scott’s attention shifted.
Across the room, by the grand balcony, he spotted her.
Emma.
She stood there and sipped her champagne with a blank expression on her pretty face as she quietly took in the beauty of the city under the fresh night sky.
Scott smiled. “Oh, Emma.”
Albrecht’s fist shook as he shouted.
“Listen to me!”
But Scott had stopped listening entirely.
“Maybe later…” Scott said casually.
And in one swift, precise motion, he struck three fingers into Albrecht’s side to directly target his liver. The military man’s eyes widened in shock as a sharp, unbearable pain coursed through his body. His grip on Scott’s collar faltered, and he crumpled to his knees, gasping silently in agony.
Scott brushed off his blazer, adjusted his cuffs, and walked away with his hands in his pockets.
“Trained in the military, he says…”
He ignored the whispers and side-eyes from the other guests as he made his way to Emma.
When he reached her, he tapped her left shoulder.
Emma turned to look, only to find no one there.
Before she could react, a finger poked her right cheek.
“Hey, babe…” Scott said with a quirky smile.
Emma didn’t even look at him.
“Oh, it’s you.”
She just pouted and frowned even more as she turned back to her champagne with an exaggerated “hmph!”
Scott chuckled nervously and leaned closer.
“Uh… did I do something wrong?”
Emma stayed quiet, her shoulders stiff as a rock.
Her eyes remained on the city below, but the tension in her expression was impossible to miss.
“Babe?” he tried again.
“…”
Emma looked away even more.
『As if I’m that easy…』
She said that, but her face was much warmer than before.
Finally, she gulped down the last of her champagne, slammed the glass onto the table, and pointed an accusing finger at him.
“Don’t hey babe me, alright? I’ve been stuck with Nadia, doing stupid photoshoots I didn’t even want to do, all night, because I thought I’d be spending time with a guy who actually liked me. But noooo—he just runs off and leaves me looking like a lonely idiot!”
Scott raised his hands defensively.
“Okay, okay, calm dow—”
“Don’t you dare tell me to calm down!”
Emma’s face was so hot she looked like red chilli sauce.
Scott winced.
“Alright, fair. I screwed up.”
He stepped closer with a softer voice.
“But… can I make it up to you?”
Emma glared at him and her eyes narrowed.
“Oh, you’d better.”
Scott tilted his head and grinned at Emma.
“Oh, I will~”
His voice came out as more of a sweet tease.
Emma still kept that skeptical pout on her face.
“Oh yeah? How—”
Before she could finish, Scott moved behind her and wrapped his arms securely around her waist to really feel the sweet curve of her hips. He pulled her close until their bodies were pressed together, and he could feel the softness of her butt against his crotch.
He laced his fingers just above her stomach and leaned in as his lips gently brushed against the side of her neck.
That little feeling made her legs weak, and even more… there was already a fire burning between her legs.
His voice became lower and the heat of his breath tickled her skin.
“Are you less angry at me now?”
Emma’s body stiffened for a split second before a small, involuntary smile broke through her pout. Her lips pressed together as she tried to fight it, but she couldn’t resist the warmth spreading across her cheeks.
“Hmm… maybe a little.”
Scott smirked against her neck. “Only a little?”
He tightened his hold on her slightly, pulling her butt even closer to his crotch until their bodies were flush.
If they were any closer, she thought, he might as well be wearing her like a tailored suit. Her face turned redder as she felt the full intimacy of the moment, but she didn’t pull away.
『Tch, am I that easy…?』
From inside the event hall, Isaac Volkner stood by the bar and casually swirled his glass of champagne. The moment his eyes fell on the scene outside, his grip on the glass tightened.
『Why do I even bother? Is that the kind of man she wants? I can’t do anything about that, sure, but she could’ve at least told me… so I’d change myself.』
He looked away quickly and brought the flute to his lips then downed the contents in one long gulp. He sighed heavily and walked off toward another corner to think clearly.
Unbothered by the world inside, Scott glanced out at the breathtaking skyline beyond the balcony.
“Beautiful…”
His voice came out very smoothly.
Emma followed his eyes and let herself relax into his hold as she looked at the cityscape.
A small chuckle escaped her lips.
“Well, it is New York City. The city that never sleeps… Of course, its real beauty comes out at night.”
Scott’s lips twitched into a smirk as he raised an eyebrow.
“I wasn’t talking about the city.”
“────?!”
Emma’s eyes widened a little as she turned her head slightly, just enough to sneak a glance at him out of the corner of her eye. His face was still close to her neck, and she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin.
Their eyes locked, and for that brief moment, it felt like nothing else in the world mattered.
“You think I’m… that beautiful?”
With how low and sexy her voice was, Scott could tell this was a very purposeful question.
“Was there ever a comparison?”
He effortlessly followed up.
Emma’s cheeks flared hotter, but she kept smiling.
“New York City is huge. You think I’ve got that much beauty to go around?”
Scott tilted his head and faked a thoughtful look.
“Well… the city doesn’t have curves, does it?”
Emma’s laughter started off light and cheerful but softened into something quieter and more personal as their teasing back-and-forth slowly faded.
Their faces were so close now that they could feel the warmth of each other’s breath.
Scott’s lips lingered near hers, and her eyes briefly dropped to his mouth before looking back up into his.
“I…” Emma tried to speak.
“Shhhh, don’t talk, you’ll ruin it~”
“… okay.”
The closer their lips got, the lower their voice became.
Just as their lips were about to meet, a loud throat-clearing shattered the moment.
“Ahem!”
The two froze as a waiter stood a few feet away.
The man looked calm, but a little frustrated.
“Apologies for the interruption, but the unveiling of the new technology has begun. All guests are expected to be seated at their assigned tables.”
Emma groaned as her irritation bubbled to the surface.
“They can definitely start without us, no? I’m kind of working on something here, dude.”
The waiter’s composure didn’t falter.
“I’m afraid not, madam.”
Without another word, he turned and walked away stiffly.
Scott and Emma exchanged a “fuck-it” look.
“Let’s pretend we didn’t hear that…”
Scott said with a lopsided grin.
Emma’s eyes squinted like a cat’s. “Agreed.”
And just like that, they leaned in and kissed, their lips crashing together in a heated, passionate moment.
Emma’s hands gripped Scott’s shoulders tightly, pulling him closer, while his fingers rested firmly on her waist.
The kiss grew deeper, their breathing heavier, and Emma’s moans became louder as she kissed him with even more intensity than he did.
… Mhmmm~ ♡♡
… ahhhh────MWAHHHNN~ ♡!
Scott pulled her closer and slid one hand down to her thick thigh to grip it firmly through her dress.
… Eeeyahhhhn~ ♡♡♡!!
The touch made Emma press into him even more as her body jerked slightly against his.
“So… go~ooood ♡!”
Her hands slowly ran down his muscular back and her fingers dug in while their kiss became even more intense!
Their mouths and tongues simply didn’t want to part.
It was so sensual and tasty that both of them were left hungry for more, and this made the kiss so aggressive that Scott pushed her against the railings of the balcony and started kissing her neck, which made Emma moan even more.
… Mhmm-ahhh ♡♡!
“Please, don’t st~oooop──AHH ♡!”
While she was moaning loudly, Scott opened one eye, looked straight down with his contact lenses, and took a quick picture of something with his wristwatch.
『Perfect…』
He did all this while kissing Emma’s neck and pressing his tongue against her sweet porcelain skin.
“Sir! Madam!”
The waiter returned, this time visibly irritated.
“Please take your seats. Your food and drinks have been served, and your display is—”
He gestured sharply toward the event hall, where dozens of well-dressed elites and superheroes were watching in stunned silence.
Even Nadia was there and all she could do was cover her face in deep shame.
“—disturbing the other esteemed guests.”
Emma pulled back with a reluctant sigh.
Her saliva-soaked lips were swollen and her hair looked like she was slapped by a tornado.
Scott chuckled and ran a hand through his own disheveled hair before adjusting his blazer.
“Guess we’d better go…” he said.
Emma bit her bottom lip.
“That was fun. And, uh…”
She hesitated as her voice dropped to a softer tone.
“That was my first kiss.”
Scott stopped mid-step and turned to her. His expression was somewhere between surprised and amused.
“No kidding? Good thing I’m a great kisser, huh?”
Emma shoved his shoulder lightly.
“Shut up and get moving.”
As they made their way back to the hall, they ignored the stares and murmurs that followed them.
Or maybe the looks were because Emma kept sticking her hand up her dress to adjust her blouse.
At some point during that heated kiss, Scott somehow undid her blouse, and the mere thought of it made her cheeks burn with embarrassment, but she was also drooling from the thought of it.
『Imagine if he tore my blouse and used it to choke me like a dog while banging me from over the balcony!』
She laughed like a class-1 pervert.
『He can do that… RIGHT──?!』
Meanwhile, Isaac stood at the edge of the room with a fresh drink in his hand.
A sharp pain hit him as he watched them walk past.
He quickly turned his attention back to the stage and forced himself to focus on anything else.
—
Scott and Emma were now at their table.
The lavish table was adorned with polished silverware, pristine white napkins folded into intricate designs, and an arrangement of meticulously plated dishes that looked as much like works of art as they did food.
At the center of the table stood a chilled bottle of vintage red wine, the label proudly boasting its 1982 origin—a treasure among connoisseurs.
Emma slid into her seat and her eyes immediately lit up at the sight of the extravagant spread.
“Wow, they really pulled out all the stops, huh?”
Scott eased into his chair with a relaxed grin and adjusted his cufflinks.
“Well, nothing less for a gala full of egos bigger than the city skyline.”
Emma chuckled and leaned over slightly as she inspected the delicate dishes before her.
She picked up her fork and playfully nudged Scott’s arm.
“You want me to feed you?”
Already focused on the small holographic screen projected from his wristwatch, Scott barely glanced up.
“Sure…”
He replied absently as his eyes narrowed when he zoomed in on the image he’d taken moments ago.
Emma didn’t seem to mind his distracted tone.
With a bright smile, she picked up a plate and carefully speared a piece of seared salmon glazed with a honey-miso sauce.
Holding it up to his mouth, she beamed like a ray of light.
“Say ah~!”
Scott leaned forward and took the bite without breaking his concentration. As he chewed, his mind worked furiously to analyze the image—a news van parked a suspicious distance from the Blue Garden Hotel.
Unlike the other media vehicles stationed close to the entrance for easy equipment access, this one was parked far enough away to seem inconspicuous, yet close enough to maintain a vantage point.
“Really suspicious…”
He switched the image to X-ray mode.
The interior of the van, however, was completely blocked.
Whatever shielding it had, it was advanced—too advanced for a standard news crew.
『Elena’s likely not leaving her table until the new tech is revealed. She’ll probably cut the power to create a big distraction and make her move to steal it. Could the people in the van be the ones planning to take down the power? No, that doesn’t really add up. It’s more likely Dark Elf and Trickshot. Yeah, that makes sense.』
Just as his mind began to piece things together, Emma pressed another bite of food against his cheek.
“Come ooOOoonnn~”
She giggled playfully.
“Eat! You can save the brooding detective act for later.”
Scott turned his head and opened his mouth just in time to catch the bite before it slid off the fork.
He chewed thoughtfully and looked back at the image.
[ALERT: 95% of the food in this venue is laced with an unidentified compound. You must ensure the superheroine, Miss Mercury, does not consume it.]
Scott froze mid-bite as his eyes snapped wide open.
“What────?!”
He hissed under his breath which drew a few curious looks from nearby guests.
His eyes darted to Emma, who was happily chewing another bite of food.
Panic set in as he leaned forward and gripped her jaw gently but firmly to stop her from chewing further.
“Don’t eat that!”
Emma blinked in surprise as her head tilted slightly.
“Huh? What’s the problem?”
She mumbled around the half-chewed food in her mouth.
Scott sighed as his shoulders dropped.
“It’s too late now…”
“Eh…?”
Emma was still very lost.
Not knowing what else to do, she suddenly pushed the chewed food out of her mouth.
It now hung out on her tongue.
“There! Happy?”
She managed to talk with her tongue stuck out.
Scott’s face squeezed in disgust as he took a napkin and cleaned it off her tongue.
“What the hell was that?!”
Emma gave him an innocent, child-like look as she twiddled her thumbs and shyly stared down.
“I-, I thought you wanted to do that thing where I chew your food first, and then you eat it. You know, couple stuff.”
Scott stared at her, deadpan. “That’s disgusting.”
Emma’s cheeks flushed, and she laughed nervously.
“Ahaha, yeah, totally disgusting. Who would even do that, right? So gross. Super unhygienic!”
She quickly waved it off, pretending to gag for effect.
『Well, I think it’s romantic. Hmph!』
She did her best to hide her disappointment.
Scott raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.
“Uh-huh. Sure.”
He turned his focus elsewhere.
“System, is this dangerous? Was the food poisoned?”
[UNKNOWN. The compound is not classified as a toxin. However, its properties suggest it functions as a suppressive drug.]
“Suppressive drug?”
Scott repeated softly.
Before he could press the System for more details, the lights in the event hall dimmed abruptly.
A voice boomed over the speakers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests… tonight, it is my great honor to introduce a man you all know. The boy genius who, at twenty-three, revolutionized technology as we know it. The current COO of Black Industries and your host for this evening—Dr. Anthony Black!”
A spotlight illuminated the stage as a young man in his early thirties strode out with his hands casually tucked in his pockets.
He was dressed in a sharp tailored suit.
Everyone clapped greatly for him.
Scott’s eyes narrowed as he clapped along half-heartedly.
“This guy…”
Meanwhile, in the shadows of the event, Trickshot’s voice crackled through an earpiece.
“Everyone’s eating. Looks like it’s time.”
“Perfect. Send in the squad.”
Grave kept his reply simple.
