Chapter 53: Floor Raid II
Abandoned Military Compound, Meteor City…
The room remained steeped in gloom.
The only light came from the flickering television.
Mist finished the last of the chips with a reluctant sigh.
She slouched in her chair as she was a bit more comfortable now that her arms were free.
Across the room, Dark Elf spreaded lazily on the sagging sofa, eyes half-lidded as she watched the news.
Mist glanced at the now-empty bag in her lap and then at Dark Elf, who lay there like a cat in a patch of sunlight. She wanted to ask for water but felt too awkward to say anything.
『Do I just say it…? I mean… she’s nice, right? She gave me these chips, so it wouldn’t be wrong to ask for water, right? NO! NO! Sigh~ It’d be too awkward…』
Before she could figure out how to phrase her request, Dark Elf sat up suddenly and her crimson eyes lazily slid over to Mist with a dull interest.
“Oh, you’re done already?”
She asked as she stretched her arms over her head.
Mist flinched slightly, caught off guard.
“What? No, I didn’t eat it that fast…”
She looked to the side with faintly pink cheeks.
Dark Elf tilted her head and raised an eyebrow.
“Huh? Pretty sure I just gave you those like two minutes ago. Better watch how you’re eating, or you’ll get fa—”
“For fuck’s sake, I’m not fat, okay?!”
Mist snapped as she glared at her.
“And I didn’t eat it that fast! Calm down!”
Dark Elf scratched the back of her head, utterly unfazed.
“Sure, sure. Whatever you say.”
She waved her hand dismissively.
“Anyway, you ate some chips, so you must be thirsty.”
Mist hesitated, biting her lip. “… Uhm, yeah. Please.”
With a sigh, Dark Elf walked over to a dusty table in the corner.
She grabbed a half-empty water bottle, wiped it down with a rag that looked marginally cleaner than the table, and unscrewed the cap halfway.
She tossed it to Mist, who caught it with a bit of effort.
“Drink up…”
Dark Elf muttered as she flopped back onto the sofa.
Mist opened the bottle fully and took several long gulps.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
The cool water was a welcome relief, and she exhaled with satisfaction then leaned back in her chair. Her body felt heavy with exhaustion, but she couldn’t shake the awkwardness in the room.
Dark Elf’s casual personality was… unsettling.
From her perch on the sofa, Dark Elf lazily pointed a finger at Mist’s legs.
“The ropes around your ankles are loose. If you want, you can come sit here and watch the news. Something wild’s going down at the Blue Garden Hotel.”
Mist froze, blinking in confusion. “Wait… what?”
“Yeah, you heard me…”
Dark Elf popped some popcorn into her mouth.
“C’mon. Sit. Or don’t. Whatever.”
Mist stared at her, utterly baffled.
“I’m your hostage! Why the hell are you treating me like a guest—or, I don’t know, a sister?”
Dark Elf didn’t look at her.
Instead, she focused on the TV screen.
“Why waste time with traps when I could’ve poisoned your chips or the water? It’s stupid to even ask.”
“You’re insane.”
Mist pouted slightly.
Despite her protests, she stood and shuffled over to the sofa while her legs tingled as blood flow returned.
She sat at the far end, eyeing Dark Elf warily.
On the TV, Judy Cho’s was all they could hear.
“A mysterious red gas is spreading through all 80 floors of the Blue Garden Hotel, trapping hundreds of people. The gas appears to strip heroes of their powers, leaving them helpless. Authorities are now waiting on the arrival of tech-based hero Rope Girl to attempt a rescue. The question remains—how long can they hold out?”
Gwen’s chest tightened.
“God, I hope those people will be okay…”
Dark Elf smirked, side-eyeing her.
“By ‘those people,’ you mean Nightwatch, right?”
Gwen stiffened, refusing to meet her smug face.
She nodded slightly, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
Dark Elf threw another piece of popcorn into her mouth.
“Do you really think he’ll come for you? Got that much faith in him?”
Gwen lowered her head and her voice softened.
“I’ve… never really been nice to him. I try to, but I don’t know. I always joke around or annoy him to get his attention. I just don’t want him to forget me, you know?”
Her voice cracked slightly.
“But I feel bad… making him go through all that. I know I’m a terrible person.”
Dark Elf paused mid-chew, then extended the bowl of popcorn toward her.
“You’re not a bad person. Just selfish. Every woman who loves a man? She’s always selfish about him.”
Gwen’s lips quivered as she took a handful of popcorn.
She managed a small smile as her eyes got teary.
“Thanks… I guess.”
Dark Elf leaned back to watch the TV better.
“Just don’t cry on my sofa.”
“I’M NOT CRYING!”
“Psssh, whatever…”
━ ━ ━ ━
36th Floor, Blue Garden Hotel, New York City…
Scott’s eyes fluttered open and a sharp gasp escaped his lips as he took in the sight before him.
Emma was slumped over his chest with her body limp and covered in red-streaked veins. Blood trickled from her nose, ears, and mouth, staining her pale face.
Instant panic hit him.
“Emma!”
His voice was still a little rasp from the gas still lingering in his burning lungs.
Livestream comments scrolled in:
[OH MY GOD, HE’S ALIVE!]
[FINALLY! NIGHTWATCH, GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER.]
[Emma’s in CRITICAL CONDITION. DO SOMETHING!]
[Massive WAKING UP donations coming in! Let’s FUCKIN’ GOOOOOO BOI!]
[Not him looking at the chat instead of helping her. 💀]
[Donation Alert: $500 from @CerberusX – Welcome back, hero. You’ve been out for a while (´・_・`)…]
—
Scott glanced at the blue screen as his heart pounded.
Massive donations poured in: roses, luxury cars, even a magic castle gift worth quite a lot.
The comments screamed at him to move.
“She… she needs help…”
Scott muttered as he shook off his dizziness.
Ignoring the stinging itch spreading across his skin, he pulled the gas mask off his own face and placed it over Emma’ s.
The moment fresh oxygen reached her, her breathing steadied, if only barely.
[Sir_Dragon: CHAD MOVE RIGHT THERE 🗿 Always, protect the girl, bro.]
[Vio_Zero: DO NOT LET HER DIE, NIGHTWATCH.]
[Tylarian: Bro sacrificed himself. I’m not crying; YOU ARE.]
[Pedro_Sousa: He’s a good man. Thanks for your service!]
Scott’s fingers twitched as he turned to the System.
“Purchase a hazmat suit. NOW.”
[Ding! Hazmat Suit purchased. Deploying now.]
A sleek white-and-gray suit materialized in a box beside him, and Scott wasted no time. He zipped Emma into the suit and secured the built-in mask and made sure it was airtight.
His chest heaved with relief as her vitals appeared to stabilize slightly, while the itching on his own body lessened.
He wiped a hand across his sweat-soaked brow.
“System, the gas… it’s not affecting me as much anymore? Is there a reason?”
[Ding! ATAM-5 Suit: 100% Complete. Deployment Ready.]
Scott’s lips split into a grin.
“Yes! Finally!”
The sleek, metallic storage box materialized in a flash and unfolded itself with precision.
Inside, the ATAM-5 suit gleamed: matte black with subtle electric blue LED accents that pulsed faintly like veins of light. The utility belt was perfectly fitted, lined with gadgets he barely recognized.
The livestream erupted.
[Hot_Papichulo: NO WAY. LOOK AT THAT SUIT.]
[Lumini: Okay, but where does he get this stuff? Is Nightwatch secretly a trust fund kid?]
[Figulicious: This dude’s DRIP is on another level.]
[G.O.D_1999: Looks like cloth, not armor. Bro about to LARP his way through the fight.]
└ [K7RM4: Ehh, maybe it’s like all those lightweight armor that harden on physical contact? 🤔]
└ [Timeturner: The government barely has that bro. 💀]
“Let’s see what you’ve got!”
Scott pulled the suit on.
It fit like a second skin and sealed with a hissing whisper as the Auto-Seal Zipper activated.
The faint hum of the suit’s systems came alive around him.
[Good evening, Scott…]
A smooth, unfamiliar female voice sounded in his ear.
Scott jumped. “Uh… hello?”
[I am your new Al assistant. Combat Assistance Tech—or CAT for short. I provide real-time threat analysis, situational tactics, a 360-degree Echo-Sonar Array, and augmented reality overlays synced to your HUD.]
Scott blinked.
“That’s… that’s awesome. Like, actually awesome.”
He had a strong urge to shriek with excitement.
But, of course, he didn’t.
[Wait until you see what else I can do…]
—
[FallenAngel: WHO IS HE TALKING TO?]
[Povilas_Demikis: It’s gotta be the suit Al. No way this man just went insane mid-stream.]
[Vio_Zero: I’d go insane over the new girl, fr. I hope she becomes like a sidekick or something!]
└ [Timeturner: REAL 🗿]
[Rexxar5000: Guys, my network is so shitty. 😩 Is anyone having the same problems?]
└ [Wind_Walker3606: Uhh, as @4aceofspades101 he legit said the same thing.]
—
“CAT, can you give me the building’s layout and locate the source of the red gas?”
Scott asked as he adjusted Emma on his back.
[Scanning now. Gas dispensing units located on the 10th floor. You’ll need to bypass three hostiles to proceed.]
Scott nodded with some renewed confidence.
“I can handle that.”
[N3pTune_Wrath: HE’S BACK IN THE GAME, BOYS.]
[Valyrxa: Bro is solo carrying while carrying. LEGEND.]
[Johnathan_Mcstay: Imagine the AI flirts with him. 💀]
└ [G.O.D_1999: Imagine I bonk it. 🗿]
└ [Mozzy_da: Valid CHAD move! XD]
—
With Emma securely on his back, Scott dashed toward the staircase. Each step felt lighter as the suit’s enhancements kicked in to counter his fatigue.
The HUD displayed a 3D map of the building, enemies marked with glowing red outlines.
“Three on the 15th floor? Piece of cake.”
[G.O.D_1999: Piece of cake? Sir, you were dying ten minutes ago. Relax.]
[Vio_Zero: FANS RISE. PROTECT BEST GIRL.]
└ [Pedro_Sousa: Valid statement.]
└ [CerberusX: I approve (・ε・`*) …]
└ [Tylarian: *nods furiously*]
[Donation Alert: $300 from @Crownslayer49 – Keep up the good work, man! Love your stream!]
[Jesse_Windham: This man needs life support donations!]
—
Scott smirked and adrenaline surged through him as the ATAM-5 suit adjusted to his every movement.
[Scanning the area for any abnormalities…]
Scott adjusted Emma on his back and slowed his pace when CAT’s voice buzzed in his ear.
[Three hostiles detected ahead. Approaching rapidly.]
Scott’s HUD highlighted the silhouettes of three men wielding handguns.
“Perfect…”
The faint hum of muffled voices ahead quickly gave way to the sharp click-clack of cocking pistols. The three men emerged into view with their faces concealed behind gas masks, and the shiny barrels of their weapons gleaming under the sporadic lighting.
“There he is!” one shouted.
Before Scott could react, the first bullet tore through the air toward him.
… BANG!
He zigzagged to the left.
… bang────BANG!!
The second and third bullets followed, but Scott ducked and twisted, narrowly to avoid them as the shots whizzed past.
… bang────CLINK!
The fourth clipped the corner of his shoulder and left a faint spark on the suit but no damage!
… CRACK!
The fifth round hit him dead center in the chest.
Scott stumbled back a step as the force nearly knocked the wind out of him. He braced himself for the pain, but instead of digging into his flesh, the bullet flattened and ricocheted harmlessly to the floor with a gentle clink.
The suit went hard then soft again.
Just for very short intervals.
[Streak91: HE JUST TANKED A BULLET LIKE IT WAS NOTHING. 🔥🔥🔥]
[Vio_Zero: Bro didn’t even FLINCH. 💀]
[Johnathan_Mcstay: DID YOU SEE THAT?? I TOLD Y’ALL IT WAS ARMOR.]
[Hot_Papichulo: How does it look like cloth but tank bullets?? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.]
[Wind_Walker3606: Probably some kind of special alloy or something like that… Rope Girl has something similar, no? So it’s not that surprising. 🤔]
└ [Figulicious: Rope Girl is overrated, man. Stop. 💀]
[Sir_Dragon: Give praise to the devs who designed such an immaculate armor 🗿]
└ [Lumini: I agree. I wanna see more of it!]
—
“CAT… what was that?”
Scott asked, sounding relieved.
He designed the suit, but even he didn’t know all the features he gave it or how they were applied.
[The ATAM-5 incorporates Electro-Adaptive Weave (EAW). This advanced mesh-layered armor stiffens upon impact, dynamically absorbing force from ballistics and blunt trauma.]
Scott chuckled as the adrenaline made his voice shaky.
“That’s… pretty awesome.”
He glanced back at Emma who was still unconscious but safely tucked into the hazmat suit.
“Lucky none of those hit her.”
Before he could dwell on it, CAT interrupted.
[Would you like to deploy the Shock Nightwings?]
Scott’s face lit up beneath his mask.
“Glad you asked.”
The viewers were already excited.
[Rexxar5000: NIGHTWINGS??? WHAT IS THAT?]
[Vio_Zero: This is gonna be GOOD. I can feel it.]
[Timeturner: Bro’s about to FLEX again. Call it now.]
—
The metal pouches on Scott’s waist hissed open.
… FWOOOSH!
Two sleek, shuriken-like tools shot up, and Scott caught them effortlessly. They hummed faintly with energy as he spun them in his right hand while balancing Emma’s weight on his back with ease.
“I designed these myself. I call them Nightwings… they’re multifunctional, shuriken-like tools.”
They were sleek, boomerang-like weapons shaped like the letter “N” to represent Nightwatch. Their design incorporated an aerodynamic, crescent-shaped curve, with the central body forming the diagonal bar of the “N” motif. The ends of the weapon tapered into sharp, fang-like edges.
—
[K7RM4: MERCH IDEA RIGHT THERE.]
[Tylarian: I NEED THESE IN MY COLLECTION, PLEASE SELL THEM ONLINE.]
[Pedro_Sousa: Imagine having Nightwings on your office desk. Instant flex.]
[FallenAngel: Hmm, I like the throwing needles better…]
└ [G.O.D_1999: Tbh, only because he humbled E-Porner’s little sausage with it. Imagine using it on The Peak.]
—
Scott hurled the Nightwings toward the men.
The sleek tools whizzed through the air like miniature saw blades, but the enemies dodged easily with a mad sneer behind their gas masks.
“Ha, you missed!” one taunted.
But Scott was already sprinting forward.
The Nightwings arced through the air and sparked violently.
… brrr────BZZZZZTTT!!
Electric currents surged between them to form a web of crackling energy. The two closest men screamed as the net of electricity encased them, making their muscles lock up as they crumpled to the ground.
Scott leapt over the fallen men as his HUD locked onto the last hostile.
The third man aimed his pistol and fired wildly.
… Bang! Bang!
Scott twisted his body mid-air and the suit’s enhancements allowed him to narrowly dodge the bullets. With Emma still secure on his back, he landed a powerful dropkick to the man’s chest.
The force sent the man flying into the wall.
… kaaa────THUD!!
He slumped to the ground, groaning as his gun skittered across the floor.
Scott didn’t look back.
[Crownslayer49: MY MAN JUST SOLO’D WITH HIS GIRL ON HIS BACK.]
[Valyrxa: Somebody give him a medal. That was CLEAN.]
[N3pTune_Wrath: Tactical genius. Absolute madlad.]
[Hot_Papichulo: Can we get an instant replay? THAT DROP KICK, THO.]
└ [LoopVid editors probably already have it XD]
—
Scott reached the 10th floor with a pounding heart.
A faint tap on his shoulder made him freeze.
“Uh, Scott?”
Emma’s voice was faint but unmistakable.
Scott turned and his chest tightened as he saw her face through the hazmat mask.
Emma chuckled weakly.
“As much as I like the piggyback ride, I’d much rather ride you another way.”
[G.O.D_1999: BONK!]
[Streak91: 😳 NEW GIRL, PLEASE.]
└ [Vio_Zero: Let the queen express herself, ALRIGHT?!]
[Sir_Dragon: THE CHILDREN, MISS. THE CHILDREN.]
[Pedro_Sousa: No sane kid is watching this. She’s very much spitting facts XD]
—
Scott smiled despite himself. “Emma! You’re awake.”
She slid off his back, though Scott kept a hand on her shoulder as if she might fall over.
“Are you okay? Like… really okay?”
Emma nodded and her angelic smile widened as she punched him lightly on the chest.
“I’m fine. You don’t need to baby me, babe.”
Scott’s hand lingered for a moment longer before he let out a breath of relief.
“That’s good.”
The two stared at each other and their smiles swelled as they stepped closer.
[Hot_Papichulo: Cue romantic music.]
[FallenAngel: Just kiss already.]
[G.O.D_1999: NO TIME FOR THIS. STOP THE GAS!]
—
CAT didn’t waste time to interrupt.
[The red gas is still active and lethal. You should deactivate it immediately.]
Scott’s eyes widened. “Oh, right! The gas!”
Emma sighed, visibly disappointed.
“Yeah… that. You should probably do that first.”
As Scott turned and sprinted toward the control room, Emma watched him go as her lips twitched into a faint smile.
『I really wanted to kiss him, though… Imagine how good the it would feel if we’re french kissing and choking in this toxic gas, kyaaaaa~ ♡! So romantic!』
She shrieked a little as her face pinked.
[Vio_Zero: NEW GIRL IS DOWN BAD. LMAO.]
[N3pTune_Wrath: Priorities, people. PRIORITIES.]
[CerberusX: No kiss yet? Tragic. Absolutely tragic.]
[SleazyPen: It would be so cool if Emma lets Nightwatch sodomize her as a reward for saving them!]
└ [Pewkmon: Bruh. 💀]
—
Scott arrived at the nexus point where all the red gas had been spawning from.
Set up there was the deadly contraption that dispensed the gas at a very merciless speed.
“Huh──?!”
But that wasn’t what shocked Scott.
It was the two people collapsed next to the device.
Pulsar and Vincent Lakewood.
